I know there was a lively discussion of the whole eye-patch issue in another thread. Last night they were advertising the pirate mythbuster for next wednesday. From their site: Episode 71: Pirate Special Arggghhh, me hearties! Jamie and Adam plundered the seven seas in search of pirate parables and maritime myths. The result? This 2-hour spectacular episode! And, with four stories of hijinks on the high seas the action is thick and fast. Playing with more firearms, the guys try to figure out how deadly cannonballs really are versus the splinters sprayed from a mighty broadside blast. Kari, Grant and Tory on the port side decode the mysteries of the ol' pirate eye patc…

In the early nineties, I wrote a screenplay about Mary Read and sent it to Stephen Spielberg’s house in East Hampton. I received a very nice rejection letter from Amblin which I have kept as a memento to my chutzpah. I want to retire from teaching next year. While exploring possible career changes, the field that jumped out as number one was the performing arts, with an emphasis in writing. I want to re-work my screenplay into a stage play. Back in the early nineties, I was restricted to my local library as a source of information on Mary Read. I would be grateful to anyone who could suggest 21st century sources of knowledge that would help me write a accurate account o…

Yes, it's now plain that Gwen Stefani has a soft spot for pirates. We all remember her "Rich Girl" pirate video (or at least we should), but I don't think too many have noticed that she has a line of clothing out that borrows heavily from pirate style. Consider: These are just a few. To be perfectly honest, the pictures don't do them justice. In stores the piratey flare is much more distinctive (and then you can see the label, which is a foot long silk ribbon adorned with flags and ships

Found this title listed on Wikipedia. IMDB lists several actors as 'Turkish prison guard', 'Turkish guard', and 'prison guard'. Just by the title, maybe someone will try to sail "to the ends of the earth". Barbossa could have been foreshadowing in the first film when he and Sparrow were fighting in the cave: "You're off the edge of the map, mate. Here, there be monsters!"

Well now, seems that being in the right place at the right time can serve us well! I met a rather rougish and charming lad over last weeks end (at the Make A Wish Pumpkin sale really... ) who just so happens to be the lad that is sculpting the new POTC fugural dolls. Imagine that. He was having a wee bit of trouble getting the pictures he needed so I set him up with a few people and now his life is good! Heh heh.... talked about what figures they are making.... (a bit of eye rolling) I be willing to share I be!

So, I've been writing a website for the last 10 days on brain and spine cancer. Boy, it's scary stuff if you're a hypochondriac. I know that I need to go pirating when I was writing about Enostosis, which a form of bone island tumor in the spine. And I suddenly think, "Enostoris Buccaneers", the Bone Island crewe in a medical world. And then I start tying "spike" instead of "spine". Egad, I need a break. Anyone else find their pirate lives crossing over into the real world of work? -- Hurricane

Right now nobody here has the funds for it, but we can start on the blueprints and dream about the possibilities. Basically, my brother and I are going to work on buying then steampunking a Delorean. I know how to refinish the outside and I have some idea about the inside, my brother knows how to make it steam powered and even set up a device to split the necessary hydrogen from oxygen in water. However, we will most likely just buy natural hydrogen gas since using the mentioned device would be very demanding on electricity. Here's a pic for anyone who doesn't know what a Delorean looks like. In case you don't recognize it, it's the same vehicle used as the time machine…

I do not know the answer to Mad Woman Cheryl's question, but I'll bet the music is remniscent of another composition rather than directly borrowed. I noticed that much of thos music is remniscent of something else or directly borrowed. Most of directly borrowed stuff is from the first soundtrack - sometimes the borrowed stuff is appropriate, sometimes not. Many of the uses are just plain odd. Take The Kraken track. I like this track and it gives the Kraken it's own ponderous motif, although it is interwoven with some organ music - music that sounds vaguely like the old Phantom of the Opera organ music. (Not Webber, the old Phantom organ music). Now this is weird. What do…

where do I go with this idea? I have a fabulous idea for a character called The Black Rose. She's a legendary piratess with unparaleled sword skills, a glint in her eyes that makes a sound of crossed swords when she senses danger, and fabulous special effects would surround her. She'd disappear in black smoke, and would end up being Jack's true love. Doesn't sound like much, but when all is said and done, breathtaking moves and effects would be part of her character. She would be a supernatural being who'd help Jack out of insurmountable odds. Oh, and she's have a wonderful black velvet wardrobe and a slinky sinewy way of moving. Jack wouldn't be able to resist her,…

During tonight's 4-hour marathon of "Mythbusters" episodes (on the Discovery channel), they have been showing teasers of upcoming 2007 new episodes. Several of the upcoming "myths" (I can only assume these are from the same episode) deal with pirate themes. Two clips they have shown thus far are as follows: (1) To validate (or disprove) that pirates faced greater danger from splinters propeled from cannonball impacts rather than from the actual cannonballs themselves. In the brief teaser footage they aired, they clearly showed extreme potential damage by nasty wooden splinters impaled into a test board from a cannonball. The teaser worked: I am extremely excited in s…
