Does anyone know of a site selling close to period ear scoops or other personal hygiene items? I thought Godwin might carry such, but they are sadly lacking in what I am looking for. (Ear Scoops seem to fetch an absurdly high price on eBay.) While I'm asking, does anyone know of a good period barbering site or book? I haven't done a deep search for such, I am just hoping someone can save me some time digging.

Ahoy! Hey, figured would start something like this again, I think we has something like this sometime back and is not longer part of the Pub archives. Anyway, I know some folks have found some good finds at some of the most oddest of places that would be period enough places. Heck, Kate found some wooden spoons at JoAnn Fabrics. :) Check this yo'r local Target in the candle aisle for a period style lantern! It's a BIG lantern & looks similiar to what most sutlers sell. It's wood and metal and sqaure with a nice handle. Looks like something sold from Jas. Townsend (since they are famous for their period lanterns). Only issue is it has no cover of any sort. Perhap…

If you have been a member of this pub for any length of time, you will know that I am a big fan of "group projects". I have Reconstructing History's 1680s Justaucorps pattern (#701) and am going to make it my "fall/winter" project. If anyone else has this pattern, and a camera and wants to "join in" we can post our individual progress, and get help right here at the forum. Anyone else game? Greg

First off.... WoW! Reconstructing History (RH) has really done their homework on the Justaucorps and it shows. The retail price on this pattern is $25, so some of you that are used to paying 99 Cents for a simplicity pattern might balk at the cost, but for what you get, its a real bargain! The pattern comes with: 1) Booklet on the History of the Justaucorps This is an outstanding piece and makes the info on my website pale in comparison. The kicker here is that RH includes line drawings and museum refrence numbers for 5 extant garments. From "Lord Clapham" dolls to the Sligo, Ireland Bog Find are detailed in this packet. RH covers the sizes, number of butto…

I noticed that the pistol that Barbossa used in Pirates of the Caribbean appears to be the same type of pistol that was used by Dawg in Cutthroat Island. I've been searching all over the web for the maker of this particular pistol. But to no avail. I have found a couple pictures online of the pistol... & have a couple more of Barbossa with the pistol. Anyway point me in the right direction to get ahold of a replica, working or non firing, of this special pistol? Otherwise.. does anyone know of a good pistol maker who would be more than willing to make a few of them? I know that there would be a few others wanting this pistol besides myself. Thank ye much, ma…

I am still in the process of learning to use the paypal tools so there may still be some glitches and anomalies. Take a look and see what yo think, over the next several weeks I will be making more different types and styles of knives as well as adding other tools of the trade. 1. The first thing you look for in new clothes is whether its made out of linen or wool. 2. The first thing when your in a new town is look for new fabric shops. 3. Go to Jo-Ann fabrics just to get a fix. 4. Order way to much and over buy any fabic, "just to have more should you need it later." 5. Hang on to every last scrap of fabric, cause you have a hard time letting go. (See #4) 6. While walking through the mall you see a new coat and are drawn to it just because it's made of linen. Anyone else??

One sometimes sees duckfoot pistols (multibarrelled flintlocks) for sale; but I was wondering whether are documentable as having been used in the black powder era, or are they just a modern sales gimmick? Capt. William

Hello! In a quest to buy a few replica weapons for myself, I decided to start a small business for fun. I will have my website www.IvanHenryTradingCompany.com up hopefully this month. Until then, I received my first shipment about a week or so ago and would like to offer forum members a sneak peek at what I have, and offer a 10% discount off the prices listed, to you - forum members - for the next 30 days! My replicas are from India, some or most of you have seen similar before, so no real surprises here. They come shipped without the vent hole drilled and with no flint. A drill press, and $5 for a flint will get your new stick going boom in no time. Please PM me or e-ma…

I ran into a guy who wearing the infamous "puffy" shirt as featured on the Seinfeld TV series. He was really surprised that I wanted to know where he got it, as exactly ZERO men ask him where he got the shirt. Anyway, it is available from International Male, and is called the Ultimate Poets Shirt-- priced at $69.99. Makes a great pirate shirt (which was the running gag of that TV episode), but purests beware: it is a historically non-authentic acetate/rayon blend. Incidentally, if you purchase the newest Seinfeld boxed DVD set, it comes with a miniature puffy shirt. It would only fit an eight-inch-tall pirate, however. Also on the International Male website is the S…

AHOY ME HEARTIES!! I be havin' interesting news regardin' our ol' chum PIRATESRUS, our friendly local landlubbin', functionally illiterate EBAY pirate: http://stores.ebay.com/Pirates-R-Us. Or if you rather, Mr. POTC Prop. I was asked earlier this evening to deliver a very important message from John owner of www.deadmentellnotales.com. It seems that John has narrowed down the search for "PiratesRus" and the bildge water is about to hit the fan. I would appreciate if you know anybody who has bought a "POTC Prop" from PiratesRus, please direct them to this message Copy/paste from an email John says: Re: PiratesRUs Fraud We have several people investigating thi…

It's possible this should go in Twill, but I'm going to be leading up to buying something, so I figured I should put it here. When making a decision about period shoes and going with tied or buckled, where is the more common breakover point regarding dates...? In other words, when did buckles become more common than ties on shoes? Also, are there any online resources about just how shoes would have been tied? I couldn't find a specific thread covering this exact point, but easily could have missed it. And now, to the Plunder-correct part of the post, would any of the more... um... affordable shoes (such as those from Jas Townsend or Fugawee) be appropriate for tyin…

Avast ye mates! Ye have any flintlock pistols, blunderbuss, muskets, musketoons ye would like to sell? Or are looking for? Real or decorative? Be my pleasure if ye would post here. I am personally looking for a used real flintlock pistol for reenactments. Those new ones are a wee bit expensive for us pirates who have had little blunder or treasure coming in of late. Thanks to ya
