I can attest that they are quite lovely close up, very durable (I accidently fell on one....), and fantastic for carrying water (ale, rum, kool-aide, whatever floats your boat)... Not just saying that cause he's my hubby. Just telling it how I see it. :)

Embroidery samples for the ladies that want it
Kate Souris replied to Capt. Sterling's topic in Crafting Kit
Syren...I got two books. One on the stumpwork and the other on ribbon embroidery. They're fantastic, but I haven't had time to try it yet because I am trying to finish this gown. I will though! -
I have Pew's book.

I absolutely refuse to take any photos. I only took 600 at PiP and I am done. Spent. Finito. LOL!

It's fine, Kass....I haven't had alot of time to work on the next one, but with the weather today, I should be able to get something done....

We've got a couple inches of snow and it sleeted overnight and now it is supposed to snow 4 more inches on top of it. I tried to go out to my car to go to work despite the fact that I am not willing to risk my life...and I couldn't even get my car open....and then I fell. Twice.

So uhm....French Mexico..... I am morbidly curious about what THOSE accents sound like.

stays and other female costume questions...
Kate Souris replied to withoutaname's topic in Crafting Kit
In looking at the pattern, yes, it does look like the stomacher is separate. I have not tried the front lacing stays yet (though I do have a lovely bit of pale blue linen that I want to do them in), so I will be completely honest and state that I have NO idea about how it all works. If I feel a bit better later, I will bust out the pattern and see if I can't get a feel for it. Or maybe Mickey can help when he gets home from work. I have Cheeky's stomach bug....not sure how I caught it from like 500 miles away.... -

These are my stays....with straps, lined, and edgebound. All that is left is for Mickey to do the eyelets. -

We'll see once the eyelets are done. I think they are going to fit lovely though. -
I used artificial sinew because I was sewing actual pelts together, and we found that held them best and looked best on seams that showed.

Silk is a dream to work with. I love the thread, I love the fabric, I love it all. Love it love it. I have a tip for real fur too...same as the fake fur, use a razor. I actually used a utility knife when I was doing alot of work with real fur (rabbit, fox, bear, beaver, etc) and it went much more easily. And I like those big curved upholstery needles for sewing fur.

If anyone is interested, I have been posting the progress on both my silk stays and my new mantua on Living History Worldwide, here.

I just got a wicked deal on a pair of Fugawee Martha's on another forum.

Oh....the things I miss while I am at work.... The smell is lingering though.... Are we sure it wasn't Cousin Robbie instead of Dutch?

Still very pretty stays. I had always wondered about that horizontal boning anyway. She's got a teeny waist! -
Just about killed myself on icy roads.... But shipped Matuslems to pyrateleather today. I still have PEW's.

Same color. Keeping it simple. Though we just ordered the silk ribbon card from RH...so that I can match ribbon to lace these bad boys up on. -

No, Rusty, I didn't use a machine. All of the boning channels, as well as all of the other parts of my stays are completely handsewn. They took me about 14-15 hours to sew the channels. It took me about 4 hours to get all of the boning in. We have a sewing machine, two of them actually, but we don't use either. Everything Mickey and I do is completely hand sewn. Granted, he does most of it, but I am learning.
