just trying to get the word out so you have time to think about it! Per William on Facebook... Auction Before the Mast We're planning an after hours auction/fundraiser on Saturday the 16th. A traditional auction before the mast involved the selling of a perished sailor's goods to other crew members, so we'd love donations in that ilk. If you have kit, clothing and other items you'd like to donate, please contact me privately about adding to the sea chest and set aside some money to support the Fort for supporting us!

NOTE: I merged the "Meals In General" topic into this topic, since the meals are for Mercury Crew only This is a bit of a brain dump of thoughts on meals. Altho Iron Jon is coming to the event, he has had major surgery so I doubt he's up for cooking, and Mr Mallet isn't coming at all, the last I heard. So that leaves us needing new blood to plan and execute meals. I'm open to helping plan and execute meals, but I'm flying in, so short of running for groceries and helping cook, Im limited in what I can bring. We need some items for cooking implements. We do have some items being lent to us by Chris (who is local in Mississippi) but we may need a few …

If you are on the adventurous side, and arent too fussy that you have all the amenities of a hotel room or modern camping, this post might be of interest to you. Since I live in Arizona, Pirate events are pretty much non-existent, except maybe a couple day trips like the renaissance fair. The ones I prefer are at either historic sites or near an ocean and you typically camp on site, on the beach or in a fort. And this many times, means a flight. True, its a bit more convenient if you do the hotel thing (and more expensive). I understand the lure of that since I've done it on several occasions. Having attended numerous pirate/historical events where I camped and ne…

If anyone would like to help out with some added items for the encampment and barracks, please let me know. We have a few items under $30 we'd like to secure as donation props to the fort. I have links for each item and they can be ordered and sent to the fort directly, or brought in by participants.

A re-enactor friend of mine who moved to Mississippi is going to the event. He's about an hour away from Ft Gaines and actually drove to the fort yesterday to do a bit of a visual survey. He's been to the event in past years and confirmed a lot of our thoughts. There's several open rooms or casemates, similar to ft taylor which are available to set up as a pub, etc... We will be needing tables and chairs (or stools) at least for a group meeting place. So it's encouraged to bring a table if at all possible, along with a chairs/bench/stools for yourself. Bring period lanterns if you have them also! We would love to have the aura of many lanterns at night. Se…

Everyone needs kit for food and drink, below are a couple of examples that have worked well in the past. If you can find them at a thrift store, more power to you, otherwise I've tried to help with the links to some products: bowl or trencher: These are available new, but the hot score is a thrift store where they can be found for a couple bucks if you are lucky. You can find them at Js Townsend too at a bit steeper price. These bowls come in a few sizes and I've actually collected a couple larger ones for serving, again thrift stores. The one pictured below is a 9 inch round bowl which is a great size for whatever is served, whether its soup, stew or beef and a coup…

In the interest of being prepared, there is talk that the island is warm in mid september. So come prepared https://weatherspark.com/y/13100/Average-Weather-in-Dauphin-Island-Alabama-United-States-Year-Round We will be monitoring the weather conditions for storms and hurricanes prior to and during the event, so keep this in mind since it is Hurricane season in September. Best to plan hotels, flights, rental cars with options to cancel or change.

With all these quality lanterns from Rob Gorrel and elsewhere, they need a deserving place to hang. William and I decided we might need some lantern hangers. One problem, finding period paintings or references to lantern hangers is nearly non existent. If anyone has references please post! So we asked ourselves what else would they have, that they might use to hang a lantern? William came up with the idea of a cannon linstock. It has a spike on the end to stick in the ground and two curly brackets for the actual slowmatch. Now period linstocks are not cheap, but I did come up with an alternative by making my own. so we will have a couple "Lantern Hangers" …

It's been a number of years since we hosted an event and Massacre Island has been extremely generous in their offerings to host us at Fort Gaines. Because of this, we're setting a high mark for kit, clothing and campsites. We're hoping to make this one of several 'must attend' events, now and every year to come, so we're going to ask that attendees bring their best. This is not meant to imply any specific requirements that would keep you from attending. It's more about celebrating life at sea, cooking, black powder, stories, and all things of the Golden Age. We're primarily looking for streamlined and pragmatic set-ups for camps and kit. The kind of stuff that …

I started two shirts during Covid and just never got back to them. Then it became a matter of dread starting on them again, not sure why, other than maybe I was just burned out making clothes for the shop. With upcoming events in July and Alabama later in the year, the need was pressing for a couple extra shirts. Two "shirts on the square" were cut out and I had gotten as far as building the sleeves and adding the cuffs. Attaching sleeves was next and never my favorite part, but I finally started on them again. Sleeves attached, now to cut the neck opening and add the collar. Still needs the bottom hemmed, buttons/button holes, and the collar opening finished af…
