Don't get me wrong, I've misled you into reading this. Sorry about that. I like Christmas... bits of it. I like spending time with people I care about, I like seeing other people happy, I like the feeling that just for once my failings are overlooked by those that surround me. I LOVE the smell of christmas trees (ecologically friendly ones from sustainable forests), I love putting up decorations (on Christmas Eve, not November). I love the atmosphere of naughtiness that pervades Christmas parties when everyone's drunk too much of my jelly-baby vodka or butterscotch rum. But why should we only feel that good for one day a year? If we're capable of living so happily then wh…

I was going to put this in Random Topics, but that seems to be off in another direction just now, so I thought I'd give it a chance at life on its own. They have the Rodin/Claudelle exhibit on view at the Detroit Institute of Arts - apparently it's the only museum in the US where this will appear. Having read somewhat extensively on Rodin (quite a character, really), I wanted to see it. I was going to give it a pass until I recently came across someone who was like-minded in their desire. It was interesting to compare the works to the history and the things I knew about them. I was awed by the startling amount of detail and expressiveness in the figures. Rodin and Cla…

Just wonderin' how many of you have linguistic skills (down boys!) in another language. I might be taking up a second language, soon. Just curious. When did you learn it and how difficult was it to pick up?

Thanks to all those here that support our men and women in uniform, regardless of political beliefs on the current conflict. It means a lot to me, personally, and I just wanted to thank you all... it means a lot to us knowing Americans like you guys are behind us... THE SANDS OF CHRISTMAS >by Michael Marks > > >I had no Christmas spirit when I breathed a weary sigh, >And looked across the table where the bills were piled too high. > >The laundry wasn't finished and the car I had to fix, >My stocks were down another point, the Cowboys lost by six. > >And so with only minutes till my son got home from school >I gave up on the dr…

First off, if you think being labelled a geek is an insult, you probably shouldn't read this. It'll just irritate you. Personally I think it's a badge of honor of sorts. It means you don't quite fit in and that is something for which I believe we should all strive. Fight the power. So we're all pals around here, right? Even if pals isn't the term, we at least maintain a healthy respect for each other as many of us are known to carry long sharpened implements on our person as an expression of what we believe is good wholesome fun. Yet a bunch of us (me included) who post in this particular forum are what would have traditionally been defined as geeks. Am I right or am I r…

Seems to be alot of DP cases in the news lately. Do you believe convicted murderers can be rehabilitated to the point of being reincorporated into society? Or have their cases be mitigated to Life w/o Parole? Should it truly be an "eye for an eye"?

A friend of mine has a book the explains what sex your brain is (ie - more female or more male). It's creatively called (what else?) Brain Sex. It has to do with right/left brain stuff - creativity vs. logic and all that jazz.) As in all these theories, it only makes complete sense if you read the book. And, to be honest, I've never read the book. But my friend talks about it all the time and had wanted me to take the test. Today I found an on-line version of the test at the BBC site. It has 6 parts and is pretty intricate - in fact, it takes a good 10-15 minutes to do, so be warned. You need a metric ruler to to measure the length of each of your ring and index fingers …

I've been going through a spell in my life the past couple years of trying to define the who, how and why's of my personality. It's been an odd and sometimes difficult journey, sometimes, to say the least. Anyway, I ran across this website and took the online "Temperament Sorter" test. It's supposed to be scientific somehow. The results amazed me. I am almost word for word, what this site defines me as. For those of you feeling a bit adventurous and maybe even wanting to find out things about yerself you may have never thought of, check it out. I am happy to now have a reason as to the "why". Keirsey Temperament Sorter P.S. If you post your results here, others …

Was foolin' around last evenin' with me old vinyl records, enjoyin' the music and the artwork on the covers. Ye know, there's been some fantastic images over the years, and that tradition continues on even with today's cds. One of me all-time favourites is the cover to Heart's 1977 Little Queen. Remember it? Tis the one where the Wilson sisters and their band are dressed like gypsies on both the front and back covers. Arr, a real gem in my opinion. So, I'm not talkin' bout the music here, jes the cover art. What be one of yer favs?

We have a "white elephant" exchange here at work. You wrap up some garbage and then folks pick it, etc. Kinda like gag gifts. Made me start thinking, (not that hard, but . . .) What's your worst gift ever recieved (birthday, holiday, etc)? Did you ever re-gift it?

Chestnuts roasting on a open fire Chipmunks roasting on an open fire Hot sauce dripping from their toes (“Oh! That tickles!”) Yuletide squirrels fresh filleted by the choir They poked hot skewers through their nose (“Ow! Wrong end, ya cowboy!”) Everybody knows some pepper and a garlic clove Help to make them seasoned right Tiny rats with a crisp golden coat Will really hit the spot tonight And now when Santa sees his tray (“Ho ho ho ho ho ho”) There’ll be some homemade chipmunk jerky for his sleigh (“Mmmm…Hey, look at that!”) And every hungry child is gonna spy To see if chipmunks really sing when they fry And so I’m brushing on some honey glaze To kee…

I was reading an article in Managing For Success pages of the October 10th, 2005 IBD entitled Do Women Boost Earnings? It discusses a study by Robin Cohen and Linda Kornfield, managing partners at Dickstein, Shapiro, Morin & Oshinsky which uses an (admittedly rather soft) scientific approach to the long-standing question of the value and importance of women in the workplace, specifically in managerial positions. Cohen says, "The group [of companies] with the highest representation of women in management had a 35% higher return on equity and a 34% higher total return to shareholders." (After reading the way they came up with this, I find their research methods to be a…
