  1. As started in the Mantua thread, I would like to continue the Calico discussion in more detail, here ~

cotton or Indian calicos were also outlawed for sale in England, twice...they were shipped for sale to the colonies I believe though...the main problem being, the cheap cottons in the stores today, well we aren't too sure they were like the indian calicos of the early 18th century...

I have been speaking with a fabric historian about GAoP calicoes ~ they are not at all like what we see in the stores. The patterns actually looked more like our modern chintz, with a light background. It wasn't until later that the Indian calicoes were made with darker backgrounds, as requested by the Europeans.

This may be helpful, for those interested in Indian calico ~

The Reproduction fabrics are Expensive ~ it is not uncommon to see them listed between $8 and $30 a Yard.

Note that Small Designs appear in the last quarter of the 18th Century.

  2. While I would truly love to be able to fight people outside my own crew, I recognise that it is not possible without at least a couple of days for us to understand the dynamics of each style.

    Hawkyns

Agreed! And, Thank You for your input ~

I think that is all we are hoping for ~ to have a set of basics, so that there are less people stuck on the sidelines, and Miminal opportunity for Damage. We are all learning, together, and every bit of knowledge helps. If we can somehow get to a level where we are all familiar with a basic set of rules (whichever they may be), that reduces one unknown. Walk through the steps together (days before a show, if not pre-event), and determine if the person you are paired up with is at a level you are comfortable with. If not ~ walk away.

Given my location and current experience level, that is the best I can personally hope for. I consider it reasonable.

  4. You could come to Michael's Columbus events.

Which is still in doubt until funding for the Ship's budget for the 2009 year is firmed up... I'm hoping to hear some news in the not too distant future... So far the rumours surrounding the matter are alternatively hopefuly and pessimistic. But I am very much hoping it will go well.

And we would love to have you Mary, and everyone else as well!

Ah, yes, and I should Love to Attend ~

There is, however, the small matter of Employment ~ which is from the month of April through September. I am limited in the number of events I can attend during the summer. Especially those which require airfare and extended days off. So I must pick and choose accordingly.

  5. Lawrence the Viceroy...

Crudbeard's bird, Oreo, is an African Raven

his woman is Bloody something Barbara

not sure about the walk the plank photos...only know the WINNER

and Don Brown from Pirate's Choice, not sure of his wife's name, have yet to meet her

    Bloodthirsty Barbara

  6. Re-enactment is a dangerous hobby, but the adrenaline rush that comes from a good battle is worth the risk, as long as people are well trained.

This is True ~ Re-enacting CAN be Dangerous.

I Don't agree with building in additional ways to get hurt, instead of planning for a more universally attainable level of realism.

Hawkyns, sir ~ you are Extraordinary in your level of commitment and detail, and I mean No Disrespect. However, I too would like to play ~ safely. Trust is a difficult thing ~ intentions go wrong, and flesh is weak ~ what was meant to be no more than a "Martial Arts bruise" might dislocate my artificial hip.

There will always be those that have the ability to go above and beyond ~ and so they should. However, I think this idea was meant to be more inclusionary, for everyone.

  7. We would follow the insane giggling to Stynky's place and just take back all the items he stole...

You can't! He's sending it all to me! (Anyone missing a wooden brown mug should report to the Surgeon's dark, dank surgery on the bottom deck of the Mercury.) He called me last night at 12:30am (at Mary's behest! Do you people not have jobs?) to tell me he was going to send me the pewter one too, despite the fact that I already explained (three times!) that I had found mine in my stuff!

I am So sorry about that! Not that I truly had that much to do with it ~

("Quick! Call Mission! I've lost my hearing!" via Bilgemunky Chat. Leading to "His phone is ringing. Did you hear that?")

Well... OK, maybe a little. <_< But you said you were bored at work anyhow, right? And besides, No, I don't have a job! Not that I can sleep at night anyhoo.

  8. How do we work out a deal to get some shipped to Fort Zachary Taylor for PIP?

I may have a soloution if we can get enough interest. "What if..." I put together a small home-made trailer from salvage parts, lash on as many poles as is safe to do so, then; we start a relay from here to there with people that can meet and exchange the trailer . Each person pulls it a little further along until it makes it to Harry at the fort? Feedback?

    Bo

I would be interested in said arrangement, if Harry is willing to store the poles. That would solve a tent issue for myself, and, I should think, a number of others.

  9. hehe. Now that Willie isn't around to play with, I have a very wet cat once again. :D

Eh? :D:blink: Willie? Wet cat? :D:D

Note to self ~ Must have Ears Checked. Again.

Or simply mustn't walk in during the midst of conversation.

Wanders off ~ to find Hubby.

  10. Well fine then! :P:P

Don't take it personal... My posts were an attempt to divert a discussion on another thread to a thread I thought was more appropirately titled... My attempt failed, and the conversation is now best left where it was. Were you expecting some inappropriate comments amount your wife? Or perhaps a critique on your excellent handiwork? I can do either or both if you would like! :P

 You mean she didn't see? Oh look, a bird ~

    :P

  11. Whoa! It's even better than I thought. I figured it was those two leaves of needles, but it arrived today and the needle display kit actually looks like this:

It'll take up a 1/3 of my table space all by itself!

It looks like fish bones!

  12. petticotebreeches.jpg

Suit with petticote breeches reputed to have belonged to Prince Rupert, dating from the 1660s. From Four Hundred Years of Fashion, the V&A

OK ~ that looks Much better, IMHO ~ more like slops, or unbanded Dutch breeches.

  13. Ok, call me lame, uninformed, out of touch but can someone post a pic or drawing of petticoat breaches???? No clue what the heck yer talking about.

They are truly ugly... to much lace and ribbon bows... they look like a skirt......

go about half way down this page, and there is an example...

    http://www.clotheslinejournal.com/splendor.htm

Pissst.... you will probably be happier with Venetians or Dutch Slops... they don't look as God-awful weird....

Ugh ~ Patrick, thank you for clarifying what they are. Really quite awful, if the sketch is anywhere close to reality. Like a weird, bastardized form of ruffled underwear.

Though it is interesting to note the blurring of the sexes in costume throughout history ~ men as fops, women in riding habits...

  14. So I am searching for flights ...what airport? If I click show nearby airports it suggests Milwaukee Wisconsin. Is this a viable option? how hard would it be to get from there to the hotel?

Silkie ~ we are 10 minutes from O'Hare ~ give a call, we'll pick you up.
