I came across a vendor with barrels at our local Ren faire, and was wondering if anyone here has used them, or heard anything about 'em... Swish Barrel and/or Thousand Oaks Barrel Co. Both companies use the same barrels, or they are both outlets for the same manufacturer. They look good -- although sized in liters which I'm not used to. They also have the "bootleg kits" in which one can supposedly turn grain alcohol or neutral vodka into something similar to "top shelf liquors," which I'm almost afraid to admit interests me, a bit. Any info would be appreciated -- else I may have to invest next weekend at the faire and do my own dang research.

Hi everyone - I'm seeking assistance on proper containment of my spices (in raw and powdered form) that will be easy to bring down with me to PiP in December. I've kept an eye out on Ebay for various spice boxes and racks, but nothing seems to be what I'd call authentic looking enough to suit my needs. I may be yielding towards a box with a fair number of cubby holes, but then again that may not be accurate for the time period (1720's). In terms of the spices themselves, to add to my powdered collection I bought a kit through an online store after finding it for sale on another site (called Flight001) that has quite a variety. I also bought a stash of twenty small …

Ahoy! I was wondering if any of you artistic types might want to take a crack at this one. My fellow Long Island Captain, Captain Rhedd, is looking for new colors for his ship, the Devil's Chariot. His crew has a few events this season and could benefit with having a new flag. I have seen many good designs come out of the Pub and was wondering if any of you are so inclined to help. Here's a picture of Rhedd and his old flag - done up at the last minute and way too busy, but you get the idea (he's on the right). Any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks!

Anyone have any information on double barrel flintlocks(both pistols and long arms)? I know of a good custom gunsmith here in the Texas Republic, but I's hopin' to find some decent factory or Indian sweatshop weapons to save me some pennies fer me grog. Also have an eye out fer a duckfoot. I've seen the kits far the three barrel caplocks, but not any flint or doglocks. -Captain Satan

Been cleaning out my workspace to make way for all the new pirate hats I've been making and I found a pair of starfire short swords from my stage combat days. There in good shape, a few nicks and dents but they are all from use, not neglect. Don't have a need for them anymore so I would like to trade them for something of a more piratical nature. I don't teach combat anymore but I am doing a lot more pirate events this year and could use some new clothes. I will post pics when I get back to my house this evening. Any takers send me an e-mail to chris.suttle@earthlink.net

I'm on a quest to fill my bag with coins. I've discovered that very few replicas exist for the GaoP and those that do exist are mainly repros of English coins, and of those no one seller has a good selection. The online stores that sell coins that definitely fit GaoP include: PewterUK.com sell a 1685 threepence. GGGodwin.com sells a 1689 gold guinea. Dorchesters.com sells two 1689 William & Mary halfcrowns, a 1693 W & M shilling, and a 1713 Queen Anne gold guinea. Jas-Townsend.com sells a 1705 crown and a 1718 half penny. Grunal Moneta sells a 1300-1700 Venetian ducat. The online stores that sell coins under the guise of piratey but not necessarily authenti…

In The Arts of the Sailor: Knotting, Splicing and Ropework and The Marlinespike Sailor Mr. Smith details the making of a sea bag - a rucksack large enough for sailors to keep their kit in and to sling over their shoulders. Does anyone know if these sea bags would be period correct? I'm under the impression that sailors had sea chests rather than bags, but I suspect that impression is because of the long standing association of pirates and treasure chests. If I were to make a sea bag with period correct materials would it fit in?

I aquired a cutlass, didn't want to spend much money for a period accurate one, so I'm modifying and polishing this one. The hilt is brass, as you can see below. Anyone know where I can get the blackening?

Here is an interesting piece of head gear for those of you looking for something that not every pirate re-enactor is wearing.... Tzar Peter took a tour of the English and Dutch shipyards during the early part of the 18th century. He was impressed with a style of high-crowned, brimmed, knitted hats that were so popular amongst seamen and bought a few for himself and they now reside in the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg. This particular hat is made from natural grey 2ply 100% sheep wool yarn. The kicker is, the hat has been "tarred" for waterproofing. I tarred the hat with "Original Stockholm Tar" and its pretty sweet. Of course it has that smoky tar smell that sc…

We be thinking of selling of one o' our cannon. Greystar cast iron tube, with 1/4" steel liner, on wood carriage, with bronze trunion caps. Bore is 1-1/2" and the barrel is 32" long. Wheels are cast iron, with needle bearings. The whole thing weighs in the neighborhood of 100 lb or so. It is the one in the back in the photo below. I personally filed off all the casting parting lines from the barrel and drilled the touch hole. She speaks well and with the steel sleeve, can fire a ball, though we have not done so. Offers? I MAY be able to comp the buyer for shipping, in the USA. email me... wrench13@aol.com
