Question 1: Who was the guy who was who was displaying all the onion bottles, jack knifes and so forth in the fort? I had his catalog, but promptly lost it. Question 2: Someone was telling me about the hand-sewn period appropriate notebooks... If that was you, can you tell me where you get them?

Because I wound up taking several things home on the plane which I had mailed to myself along with several other things that people had generously brought down for me, I wound up packing most of my surgical equipment and bloody rags into an extra backpack I was using for the week. The backback contained a lot of weird stuff including a period tourniquet, an 18" long wicked-looking capital knife and several other barbarous, inquisition style medical tools. For good measure, I threw in my fake bloodied linen rags. Upon opening my bag, I found a "Notice of Baggage Inspection" informing me that my bag and it's contents had been searched for prohibited items. They tied the sur…

Ahoy! This list is provided as a roll call throughout the year to gage the number of attendees who are staying inside and outside the Fort Zachary Taylor Historical Park at PIP 2007. The attendees will be listed by camp (period or modern) or hotel. Attendees may be a part of any encampment without camping inside the park and interaction during the festival is not limited to camping arrangements. The list merely reflects names and sleeping arrangments of attendees and the list will be updated towards the end of the year with a "confirmed" status for those attendees who have secured their transportation to and from the event. There is period camping in the 1680 Port Ro…

OK here's is where the photographer side of ol' Rats begs folks to share their favorite images from PIPs gone by. I figure if we can consolidate images in one place it would be easier for folks to see the good sh-tuff and it might even convince others to make the trip. I also remember seeing a video or two which I probably couldn't find if my life depended on it.... SO let's see what you have!! Only a couple months away!!!!

So to prevent further hijacking the black power thread, I've started this one. I will give me Muther a call later today and see what they are planning on bringing. Both in cookware and in food. I think we'll have enough eating utensils for our group of 7. So lets move this discussion here and continue planning. I'll be back soon, they're getting Thanksgiving dinner ready. Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! (Edited because I not so smart)

Here is the revised sailing schedule for PiP. The spaces fill up fast, so make sure you call before you get there if you have a specific time and date in mind. http://piratesinparadise.com/excursions/sa...ilschedule.html This includes the other ships in port as well as the WOLF. -- Hurricane

Seems like a good time to bring this up ~ Harry or William, For those of us further removed ~ Is it possible to arrange for Black Powder to be available at PiP, due to the legal constraints associated with shipping bp? Would a show of hands from those in need be helpful? (Raising one, then my other, hand) *** What? I have 2 guns ~

The Pardon Mercury has anchored at the end of the island in order to careen. The Wolf sails at a safe distance off shore to try and draw attention away from the Mercury. Redcoat camp is on high alert, reports of pirates some where off shore...sailing under cover of night. Archangel is in port in order to obtain Letters of Marque, from redcoats’ officer, to hunt pirates... The gallows are set up in a mid point area, not in any one camp, to serve as the town commons. The royal governor has issued a pardon to any pirates willing to accept it….(this allows all camps to intermingle during most of the day without looking too odd) unbeknownst to the pirates and even the pir…

The Mercury draughts are nearing completion, and none too soon, given the time left until PIP. I've completed the Mercury in profile with full rigging and I have designed all of her cannons. I am currently working on her jollywatt, but the longboat is finished. I'm going to be asking a number of questions here on the Pub, so watch for them. Here is a jpeg of the Mercury's longboat, which I recommend we call "the Gullah" (see Gullah here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gullah ), based on Harry Smid's original suggestion for the brig sloop herself. She is shown with full rigging, though she would carry only oars for her regular duties. She is fashioned after drawings …

Harry has secured a small boat from local boat builder T.J. McDermot. It is a six person skiff, originally named the Bernie B. It has seen some use, but it is still seaworthy. It just needs a coat of paint and two pair of oars. As far as the name goes, Harry says that we can rename it for our purposes. I had considered naming it after one of the Mercury's small boats, but with so many camps utilizing the boat for other activities, I wasn't sure how this would be received, so a general name might serve better. We should also discuss whether or not we should give it a different paint job, or just keep the colors as they are. The boat may also be rigged with a tilled …

Not too long ago, Harry mentioned that Fort Zachary Taylor was seeking funding to repair the barracks and walls of the fort. The fort has recieved the 2.4 million necessary to repair the large portions of the fort necessary to extend the life of this historical landmark. This money will be used to stabalize the structure and correct the ravages of time which have rendered some of the fort unusable. It is excellent news for the fort and those of us who want to see her repaired and fully restored for our long term use. What does this mean to those of us who are attending Pirates in Paradise? I shall explain the conversation I just had today with Harry. In order to rep…

If you wish to ship items to the fort for PIP, you can send them directly to Harry at the fort and he will store them for your use. In order to ship to the fort, you may use the following two methods. If you ship by regular U.S. Mail, then you should send the items to the post office at Key West. U.S. Mail: Fort Zachary Taylor Attention: Harry Smid P.O. I have spoken with Historic Enterprises on the matter of buying their brass lanterns at a group rate. The lanterns are 4 3/4" x 11" with a horn pane window. See image below. They said they'll give us a 10% discount on the purchase of 12 or more lanterns. The price per lantern would be about $26.96 each with the discount. This makes group buys very simple. Hurricane can do a group buy for the buccaneer group in the 1680 Port Royal Camp and have them all shipped to him for distribution among his crew, while I can handle the 1720 Mercury Careening Camp orders. We can save on shipping as well by sending the lanterns directly to PIP for distribution among the crew membe…

Haven't flown much lately and I'm wondering exactly how much room is one passenger allowed. I remember bringing two dufflebags when in the Army But what about a box, a good sized basket or a barrel??? Can you see where I'm going with this? After all, why have a suitcase if it's not PC and functional!!! But do they consider the weight or the size I'm thinking about a tarp or two and a couple changes of clothes and my boomers and blades (if they're not sent already!!) Everything else will be worn. Just wondering...

We are hoping to give the video out to those who participate and make it available via download or on DVD. More Details to follow. I will be helping out in the preproduction and production of the video. William and his crew will be taking care of the production and post-production process, now enough with that on to the guide. We are looking for shots of you and your crew working on whatever you do. Be it clothing, weapons prep, or to making your own tent. We wan…

As one who has had the doubious honor of "cruising" through the Caribbean; I have been able to occassionally stop in the Conch Republic (Key West to the rest of ye'), I have noticed that several Cruise Lines are trying to capitalize on the popularity of our Brotherhood (and Sisterhood). Perhaps it's time that we claimed our share, so to speak... in plainer English... are we doing anything to attract the crowds that daily spill off the Cruise Ships and would otherwise miss an event such as ours? I know that the ususal business associations would not be interested in loosing numbers to our event, but what about a differnet route? Could we find a spot in town where a few …

I am rather new to all of this and I am trying to find out more on the background and history of the GROUP that recreates the 1720 Mercury Careening Camp. Does this group only assemble and meet at PiP? Is it organized in a particular location, and are there other events where the same or similar is recreated? My interest lies in becoming move involved with such a group. I wish to represent a Ship's Carpenter from this period and I might like to help with a display and demonstration at PiP. Since I am a professional wooden sign carver, I think it might be interesting to show the public a "repair" being made to the nameboard on the stern section. I would want to run my …
