  1. after reading all articles captain bo sent links too and my understandingn of fabric production, i was led to conclude that it was a mixture of hemp and linen and even a slight blend of cotton......perhaps mix of all three depending on the grade ordered.... i bet it was a mix to find the perfect blend of strength and dryability and the right drag, et al...... quite simply , they could NOT have been 100% hemp-when wet it decays rapidly --hemp must dry out after getting wet now i only have to research canvas no 1,2,3,4,5,6 grades and weaves...... and why do i now suspect tht my husband will be then remaking sails for his little day sail boat..{ dont ask how many sets of sails we are already storing...............LOL....
  2. well-- to test your theory,you must now make 5 of these buttons in a glorious maroon for my pirate coat!! or try something new like metal casting lacers for the coat!!!BWAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAAAA HAAAAAAAAAA!! working for me i can gaaurentee accurate diagnosis and cure LOL!!!!!{rotflmao!!!!!!} are yah thinking about the fort de chatres in illinois this june? or how about the sancta maria event in ohio? now,i really have to getback to another set of stays i am working on...you lucky men who dont have to make them!!!{and farbic choice is killing me!! indecesion is killing this project!!!}

  4. and will the captain also provide the pattern to those who can pay for it? my husband is drooling already and my machine wants to race!!! and flat out, jealous-- i CAN do that-- just need a decent pattern!!! question--- is this really sailors jacket just lengthened at the bottom...... and whe were french slit pockets from? Gaop? HOPE SO THEY ARE FUN AND EASY!! captain-- may i have a pattern? and how about a mantua pattern to... of course , the fees apply-- :)
  5. bbcdutchman----- there are so many differnt grades of linen---certainly sailors and sail makers did not use the same linen as the tailors? but what title does oe place into a search engine to read if this was truth or not? do you know how old canvas is ? [ think of all the art hanging in musuems-- are they mostly composed of linen or cotton or combo--i think cotton is kind of out --not to widely available---but a combo could have been possible] AND ARGUABLY,any light weight linen is out--- did they double the linen for sails? { as in place two layers together?} methods did not change even from today { although they are always trying new designs for better wind entrapment} but were there specifically sail cloth makers? it had to be better or differently loomed than clothing fabric--- was it combined linen and wool and silk? did it depend on the weaver ? and that location and geogrpahy dictated his choice of thread?--- they needed a close weave that captured air but also a bit air permeable...... i am pretty sure that silas knows the the technique for stitching the sails together-- it is the FABRIC CHOICE AND KIND THAT he does not know...what is GaOP correct? linen? canvas? duck? linen cotton combo? any ideas about that?
  6. hmmmmm.. that is very concerning that you are dizzy after such focus..... you look young when i see your photos--- have you recently had an inner ear infection? a cold? a sinus infection? is there a history of high blood pressure in your family? at what age were the family members diagnosed? are you possibly dehydrated? up too late last night? new stresses in your olife as of late? do you wear glasses/ contacts? when was the last eye examination you had? is it time for a prescription change? i am not assuming the worst, but.... this bears investigation--unless you have recently had inner ear infection/ cold/ sinus issues..... perhaps see if you can cause the same to happen again.. do another button--but at a different time of day-- see if you can have the same thing happen.... are you nearing your 40's ? perhaps it is timefor reading magnifying glasses...? { if you try a pair and get dizzy, it aint time}--- feel free to PM me.... ( been RN for 27 years} lady constance

  14. i love reading and learning all of the """unsaid"""" { yet definitely felt by many} things that happens at events--- i have told/asked my husband a million times --- " WHY WHY WHY dont these period re-enactors just agree to take over some campground and set up a camp that educates AND provides an atmosphere of play { AKA partying and drinking for those who do imbibe}- absolutely no pressure to perform for any audience and JUST PLAY AND LEARN???? he has no answer..... it is almost as if people feel GUILTY for playing and learning and hanging out with out a " justfiable reason" to their spouses,families, lives, jobs, employers.......... why are there no thoughts of " if i am going to take a vacation, why not do it with pirates/ civil war/ renaissance/ ____________ group?" sooooooooooo........ anyone want to take this on? would love thoughts of all.......
