  1. welllllllllllll... we did research too....and i found my math mistake...instead of 45 wide fabric, we used 54.... so the crotch gusset is like extra huge..... but... when onus tucks a flap of it in the pants, looks like really cool.... adn we finished the caftan--which looks awesome....and the print is eye popping..( which is historically correct for 16-17th century) i will never get the pics up... never happen.. onus, that is YOUR job! i just do the sewing....
  2. question for you.... do you just want it to looook like period? or are you going for actual dead on accuracy, has to be right and certain people must approve, guild/ re enactor blessing/ personal satisfaction, money and time to toss at project? whom are you trying to please? do you have ANY photo where you can get close ups--as in are there any surviving period ones that have been photgraphed that you can look and SEEE how they actually did that particular jacket... and yes, the embroidery tecniques back then are incredible!!! my research shows that the pieces were cut then given to person to embroider the pattern ---then garment assembled..... i do suspect that if thread is embroidered over for depth over the joining seams, it was done after construction... and it might be that it was added after the garment was perhaps fraying at the seams to hide wear....(my nsho)
  3. Michael..... OH YAH OH YAH.... reading every word.... love the mock up pieces..... HELLLLLOOOO... WHAT FABRIC???? wheres teh pic of that???? LOL did yah get my FB message? burda pattern #... i so love to see your work.. for whatever reason, knowing someone else is working on a project is so personally motivating...INSPIRING.... AND.. for christmas i recevied the lutterloh pattern system( google it)( SOOO WORKS!!!)..... so been playing with math and string and paper and wondering if maybe that might be really useful in transfering waugh..... MIGHT BE BETTER THAN GRAPHING/ GRIDDING OUT FOR YOU... just trying to figure out the math relationhship/scale ( if there is any) of waughs drawings
  4. whoa h ho ho ho.... found me answers!!! www.historyofquilts.com tons and tons of reading!!!! egyptian gazelle quilting..... the tristan!!! ( dating 12/13th century) whole cloth quilting.... WOOL QUILTS! PIECED AND WHOLE CLOTH!!!! french, italian, dutch i am soooooooooooooooo psyched!!!! although i waffle on pattern and design.... fear way too much not being PC..... but all of my reading suggests that since i am not portraying a rich person, i can pretty much do as i please....
  5. not sure.....seems like the weather is always half and half.... unless it is in july or august....
  6. where is the pic???? i say wear it frayed and mixand match buttons....
  7. major booty of awesome cashmere winter coats....for mega cheap!!! wonder if anyone has done/ attempted this before... i gather that they will be quite a bit bulkier than regular stays.... but i see tremendous advantage as far as sewing trim around...as in, i plan on just whip/ button hole stitching around the tabs for finishing.... and tis pure glory to sew thru wool/ cashmere... using silk thread of course!!! TIA for all comments/suggestions/advice
  8. have pillaged many wool coats from good will.... and i am wondering and perusing old paintings ( in books) to see if i can get an idea what one would see--- but i know since we are pirates we can have a mix of rich and then humble blankets... i know from reading the calamitous 14th century, that blankets and pillows and such things were found many times in property lists and wills.. they existed.... but not always spoken in great detail unless it was a wealthy perrson.... anyone cite a few source?? anecdotes from other reading???
  9. ahhhhhh... a 1680s wool mans overcoat ( only because i cant find enough black cashmere coats to plunder) 2 new sets of stays, and a 1680's gown.
  10. the other day at jo anne, i saw a book called the embroidery stitch bible of stitches.... there were amazing forgotten stitches contained within.... also--- at your local library there are books on tapestries and in particular japanese stitching ... OHHH WHOOAAA...and instructions.... i DO KNOW that you want SILK THREAD FOR THE AWESOME qualities of shine and brilliance...
  11. all catholic parishes kept baptismal records. from late 1100's....... now about how one goes about looking at baptimal/ archival records of old catholic churches in england, france ,et al,,,,i dont know... i DO know that public records these days are released after 7 years after death- you can then research them... i just dontknow about records way older.... i would google the topic..........
  12. soooooooooooooooooo..... how many vendors? how many pirates? and how many pirates are registered to stay in the fort already?

  14. geeee, maybe that bitch of a wife of yours wAs spot on... iron--- steaming... and if you are wanting a line, how about this...stove pipe from hardware store inside, the tie wrap around the out side... and of course there is always the making of your head wrapped in decut tape-- yah know like a duct tape dummy for clothes-- make a duct dummy same as your head!.... full of ideas i tell yah.....
  15. OMG----------- i am filing late for all of us --hoping that we get "IN" geeex Nate..i thought silas did this already............. golly darn fried frogs! we weant to be there!!!
  16. 100 participants to camp---- does this include the vendors? or did i mis-read faymas post? is it 100 vendors and 100 pirates? or 100 TOTAL? whom decides Period correct standards on the part of vendors AND participants.... everything changes.... that is part of life.... the difficult part is that part of deciding who is "in" and who is not. i know this event has been touted as the be all end all king of pirate events..... but that too, is all in the advertising of the folks involved....( and honestly , when we could camp on the beach, truly it was the best cheapest event for the amount of days... you only had to get there to pariticpate--and i assume that is the biggest draw for the event)
  17. well seems we are coming...YAH!!!!!!silas lady c, and scut monkeys, andrew and miles but we are leaving about 330pm st lou time... so we will be there too late to assist you all with friday night events..sorry!
  18. these are awesome!!! and it is sooooooooooooooooooooooo wonderful to see that you did not round off the bottom of the stays... and that provides me inspiration for my stays that are not finished ( cause i didnot want to mess with the prickly rounded tabs!!!) and i love that you cannot see the stays lines thru the design/ pattern!!! this is a magnificent piece!! be proud of all that you have done!!! and it is so cool because your wife can make skirts of anyof the embrodiery colors to match and make the costume GORGEOUS!!!!-- and i am tremendously interested in what kind of mantua you put over such a gorgeous set of stays??? can yah show us that fabric ? i cant wait to see-- and tell your wife how fab she is with a needle---
  19. ok--- here is what i have thus far... silas did the cartridge pleating for me... think we might make it smaller pleating.... and yah the fabric is kind of jacobean....

  21. well the stomacher is going.... i used the front of the jumps for pattern tracing.... now it is all the embroidery ... the way i think i shall make it work is to shape th3e jacket front and add hooks....and the eyes will go on the stomacher part... been ooogling over 18th century embrodiery books and patterns to choose on--- with pink flowers of course!!! and i cant decide between blacksilk skirt to attach-- or black linen.... ohhh and did yah see that warehouse of fabric is having a sale on silk--all kinds starting the 18th????? thanks for your comments and input Lady B !!!

  23. when one begins a family, you do find out what kind of freinds you have.... if they are selfish and jealous about your time with them.... it has been my expereince that people are very open to well behaved children.and people in re enacting are some of the most down to earth people one can know. if here are stuck up people in this type of venue, well, i dont know any!anyone who has had children has had their dis illusionment shattered and rectified, and adjusted decently ( if they are decent people}.... children can humble you and elevate you in the same space of a minute!!! i have a little saying that might put your mind at ease.... when you are a woman in your twenties, before meeting a group of people "hmm...i wonder if anyone will like me?" but a woman in her 40's says to herself " hmmm i wonder if i will like anyone there!" and there are days that you shallvacillate between the 2 thoughts.... i say," hold steady. you are far more than what people think about you.. you knwo what and whoyou are and how sure are you that you trust THEIR judgement of who you really are?????" your consceince is a far better guide , as long as you allow yourself to learn the truths about yourself... the good and the bad.... Lady brower, i hope we have some how allowed you feel relef of any worries that you have....
  24. all of my reading suggests that they were not worn occasionally.... that their days were different than ours.... clothing was changed during the day according to event and happenings... and i one read that on particularly hot days, many people would stay in a sort of undress in their homes til dinner.... that much family time happened and not always dressed to the nines..... so these garments were worn, but not necessarily seen by those outside the family.... and what of the sick? certainly you wore less clothing when sick and recovering.... ahhh... but we forget that they got ill back then....( even though we still get sick these days}... and what does one do when ill?? stay home!! stay inside, and wear jumps....!!} and yes for re enacting purposes, they are rather a luxury... not a necessity...
