EEGAADDSS!! My canvas shrunk, a Whole LOT! I know it would butt, I didn't think it would have been that much. Well I now have to recalculate my dimensions. I think it will only be about 5' high now instead of 6'. I cut a 15' piece and I lost 2 feet after washing and drying. Oh well, I just wanted let everyone know they can plan on it.
-
SO a couple of things I've learned so far with a question or two. When you buy 21 yards of canvas, you can't wash it all at once unless you have access to some huge industrial washer and dyer. Otherwise you have cut in down smaller and wash those pieces separately. Make sure before you wash that you run a zigzag stitch along the cut edge to prevent major fraying. So Patrick, with the pole rig you've shown us, how must one cut the trap in order to allow the poles to stick out the top? Do I just wrap the door flaps around and tie off? Is that ok if it rains? (Does that even make sense?)

I looked away, and sank as deeply into the walls as I could. "I would not get involved with these two again." Now the the man, Ioan, knocked over his chair, they were between me and my way out.

Feeling as if it had been a hundred years, I drained my mug. I set it down and looked about the room. "My, my" I thought when someone caught my eye. A frozen chill ran down the back of me spine. "The Capt'n, from that ship." I stammered. "Ooohh, that hurts." My mind raced for answers. "Yes, it was Rakehell, and, oh no and the other gentleman, Ioan." I said under my breath. "I best to be keeping meself underwraps." I thought. (Edited due to my mistake and foolishness.)

Foppish Look and Airs of the GAoP
Jack Roberts replied to Reginald Killingsworth's topic in Scuttlebutt
Reggie, my dear man! How have you been? Last I remember you were rolling along in a barrel around "Port Royal". Yes, I'm slightly interested in the fopish things. So do tell. -
Maybe next year we can have a fop contest. That would give me plenty of time to get something ready. Hey, I can lisp with the best of 'em. Oh wait maybe I shouldn't say that. Mmmm... You got me thinking.

Sea Shell Replica A little steep for a prop, but if really want it. There you go.
-
Not sure about the wait. Although a phone would probably clear that up. I've heard good things about them here in the pub. Fugawee's Website
-
I half expected him to say, "silly man, boots are for pirates!" Sorry for the thread high jack, I'm personally looking into Fugawee's Concords. Close but they are the right price for me and my wife.

So I went searching today in "twill" for any previous discussions on the topic. I didn't turn up much. So I wanted to start a new topic and see what turns up. In relation to belts worn around the waist. I would assume that leather was used, like today. Where there any other kinds? If leather, what size? In my previous searches I've found around 1.5" to 2" widths mentioned. Buckles, I would assume they where used. (ie Buckled shoes, duh.) What about the ring belts I've seen, dare I say it, at Ren Faires. Would they be in use also, or is that just a total crock, made up by the rennies? How were they worn? Long or short? Were there belt loops on the breeches? (Like today) Or did they just wrap around the waist?

Aye, Thankee Capt'n. So I don't have to feel like I'm cheating when I grab a couple of concords. I've often thought about the higher heels for an impression, but I'm not ready to go that high class just yet. With them fancy foot things, I might just have to get a wig. I'm just looking for a good ol' shoe.
-
So since we are on the subject of shoes. How about the Fugawee Concords? Fugawee I know they aren't straight lasted, but can't be spending $160 on a custom pair. ( would have to buy 2 pairs one for me and one for my wife.) Should I just bite the bullet and wait awhile? C&D Jarnagin These are just a bit steep, but more correct. I don't know, I'm so frustrated when it comes to this issue.

So I'm sitting at home bored to tears and looking at fabrics online. I got to looking at some silk fabrics and was wondering; What would be the most historically accurate silk to use? Any thought?

Here is a pic of a hat without any trim on the edges. Looks kinda rough, and well Piratey.
-
Nice Pat! Love the lining. I'm going to have try that on my next hat or hats. It really depends on the blank when you buy it. The Jas - Townsend blanks come with a kind-of scalloped edge that need to be trimmed to make it smooth. You can see how they look in the first pic of the thread. I have made a couple of hats where I didn't sew any trim on the edges and left them just trimmed. Let me see if I have any pics of that hat.

Try Here; Boots Debate
-
I'm sorry I should have defined what I meant. I meant the Linen thread from Wm. Booth Draper. My apologies.
-
Could you use that thread for a machine? (I'm need of some size 40 thread in cotton but linen thread will work. ) I need some thick sturdy thread for me tent.
-
So here are some pics of the mantua I made my wife. Once again I use Kass' Reconstructing History's patterns. Pattern #708 I don't think its quite right. So please for those that have made one give me your advice.

And why might a pirate have a ninja sword you ask? Because he killed him of course! and kept the sword as to sell it off when he can.

I would also like to mention that you posted this here in Capt'n Twill. It is here for these types of discussions. This is where they stay. I know personally when I'm in other forums my focus and tone are vastly different. I used to think much the same, until I really started researching it. Now for me it is fascinating how the styles change. Just like we don't still wear platform shoes and bell bottoms today, we don't wear bucket boots and fall front breeches when trying to represent the GOaP. This is what some of us are here for, to research and discuss these details. Please, please don't take this as a lecture or as a personal attack at all. Believe me, I still wear my boots and have some drawstring baggy pants to go with them. Just check my profile. It’s just another side of the coin. So please try and get these pants made, heck I might just make some myself. Post pics when your outfit is complete and share. Just about all of us we'll admire time and effort you have put into it. I truly hope there is no hard feeling about this; I do not want to sound mean. Tone is sometimes misconstrued in written word. No worries mate! Can't wait to see what you can come up with.

LOL! Capt'n I never saw that before. Thats great.

Barbossa style slops..........................
Jack Roberts replied to smoolie671's topic in Thieves Market
Here in this forum (not in twill) there is no real regard to being historically correct. I was just commenting on the fact that I find drawstrings, although cheap and easy to made or buy, I have found that they do have their drawbacks. (No pun intended ) Heck I still wear boots for crying out loud. Thats why the discussion in twill is what it is and in here its completely different. I meant no harm, I'm just bored. (Edited due to my first comment making no sense ) -

Aye, they're much better than the drawstring kind. That gets in the way all the time. Not just for the ladies. -
yeah but still not right because of the boots. It funny how much of the "Pirate look" aka Pyle and PoTC comes from the early 1600 cavaliers. Makes me wonder if that is where the inspiration came from, and if so why there and not from the period? I've been reading an old thread about earrings Earring discussion a very fun read. I really like it when people can argue but still be civil and not take everything to personal. Just got me thinking.
