Linen/ Cotton blend is period if I remember correctly. It s called fustian. Now I've only heard about it being used for the outer shell on waistcoats and the like. I'm not sure about the use for pants and shirts but hey its better than just straight up cotton.

So I was thinking about getting my fabric from here. (Recommended by GoF) I wanted to know if the 18.5 oz. will be too heavy or just fine. Anyways probably going to get some in the next week or 2. Thanks! HempTraders

I might be able to make a couple of drawstring pants if necessary. I know they're not correct but they are cheap and easy to make. They also fit just about anyone. I can make them out of heavy cotton muslin which is cheap. Just throwing it out there. Let me know.

I've got 2 or 3 cotton gauze and muslin shirts. I know the're cotton but its better than nothing. Maybe something else I have to go through my stuff.

After reading this I went immediately and ordered my own copy. I love it! Might not be the most historically acurate book but I lot of the phrases have been gleaned from books and writings of the GoAP. 2 Thumbs up.

Awww.... Come now these sharkies aren't all that bad. I surf Central Florida all the time. They really don't mess with you. Most of the time. Although would defer to Capt'n Jim on this one. I wouldn't see it as a big issue. Now "ya'll" west coaster have got the bigun's to deal with. Have seen a couple of Portuguese Man-of-wars that make me a bit nervous. One of these days I'm going surfing fully garbed (well mostly) and going to have some pictures taken. Just for the fun it.

Well I guess the easy thing to do would be to buy some yardage of hemp. Make a small model of a wedge tent. Put something in the tent to check for leakage. (Bathroom tissue comes to mind.) Start up the hose and sprinkle the tent. See what happens. I would try it except I haven't bough any hemp canvas yet.

So I got to thinking about the logistics of the camp. Maybe if we could start out with a rendering of what we have in mind then we could start making a list of what we might need. I really think we need to start listing out what we think we need. Not saying that the list is the bible but gives us a starting point. What'd do you all think.

Well I'm not sure yet. I made these out of cotton muslin first. Today I will make them out of 3.5oz linen I just got. I'll let ya know.
-
So after the discussion on undergarments for the man. Here is my first attempt. Made them out of muslin first. Depending on the consensus, I'll then go and make them out of linen. Here are some pics. (Don't worry I'm not wearing them. ) Let me know if you need any other views. I'll gladly take some more pictures. Thanks for the help.

Besides wouldn't we pirates want something other than what we've been eating on the ship? Fresh killed pig or deer? Ohhh.. how 'bout some key deer? I hear they're tasty that time of year. (I'm just kidding. )

I find that when I make my own stuff, or make it for others, I can achieve a much better look than buying something from a vendor at a faire. Being able to customize my fabric choices to bring together the look I'm going for. Not being limited to period fabrics should broaden the available fabrics. (Before anyone jumps on me, , I'm not saying that the period fabrics are limiting. Just that they are harder to acquire easily. Sorry but Joann’s doesn't always carry linen, silk or wool. ) If you want to dye your own fabric, a whole word of possibilities opens up. You’re no longer stuck with what is on the rack. That is how I did my coat. After slamming Joann's, I did find 100% silk on the rack and that’s what I used for my coat. So you can get lucky sometimes. Also they do carry some nice brocades, the drawback is that it’s usually polyester. Anyways I'm rambling, unfortunately I'm not trying with a brandy buzz. Maybe later tonight.

Whoops... (in a whisper) was I not suposed to talk about this? Well, I might just have to make a pair or 2 for meself. I guess linen would be the fabric of choice? Then at PiP I can go running around in my drawers. Well maybe not, but at least i'll have period underwear.
-
Is there any peroid underwear? Was it just the breeches and skin?
-
Really??(an Ace Ventura draw:D) Thats cool I'll have to find something like that. I would love to find some really fine linen for a shirt and chemise. You know just to have. I also would like to find some thin linen for a coule of shirts so there cooler for us here in florida. Capt'n Sterling, I love the pic dude. Very cool, I'm also looking to start wearing a cravat with my kit. Great timing.
-
So speaking of the material. It looks very thin? If i'm correct how thin might it be? Thin being a very loose weave.

What weight of canvas should I use? I think I remember seeing 10oz somewere. Also would I be kicked out if I cotton canvas? Hemp canvas is alomost 3.5 times as much. I'm already drawing up little plans on how I want to make the tent.
-
Correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't you make a wedge tent out of a rectangle piece of canvas, 2 pole on both ends tied down and rope for the ridge? Then drape the canvas over the "rope ridge" and presto its a tent. Is the canvas just to heavy? I will be expirimenting later on.

Well after much deliberation I and my wife are going to be joining the careening camp. We were going to try and get some clothes and hats made but alas I believe buying a house has to come first. So with that out of the way I wanted to get more involved with the discussion and ask, what kind of "set decoration" might we need? We will most likely be driving from Orlando. I plan on renting a car for the drive so I probably bring down some bigger items. What kind of crates and boxes might we need? Just let me know I'll try to see if I can make them. Just let me know!
-
So Kass, do your firearms actually shoot? Can I load them up with some black powder and fire away?
-
Ahhh... yes it does. That cool, I'll have to do that tonight when I get home. I guess the button is stiff enough to "be" a button. Thanks, you rock Kass!!

Can anyone take some pictures of making a fabric button? I'm not quite visualising the process right. PS I must be a thread killer. Most of the threads I start and then answer back on just get killed. I haven't been on in a few days and look this one blossoms into something good.
