Anyone on this board going/participating? I figure I'd ask before I decide to drop by. I'm near enough that I could ride my bicycle there.

I knows some of you have done it. But I'm curious how many of you have also done it. ...seems more athentic for rogue seamen. mine originally came with drawstrings at the knees but I'm thinking of cutting the hem out..

Following up on Island Cutter's offering of his small sailboat, I took interest and paid him a visit. I am taking a deeper interest in building a small wooden vessel, that is trailerable and would like to request his help at some point. I am narrowing the plans down to one of two boats. I am fond of Herreshoff designs, probably because in their heyday (late 1800's) built were built in my hometown and plied the waters I learned to sail in. I am looking at primarily to make a dual gaff-rigged catboat, thus the "cat" name. This style of rigging is a bit more ancient than the present cutter-rig style of sail. This will most likely be, believe it or not, plywood lap-strake construction. Jenny Coquina

^I carry a windbreaker jacket in my rollie suitcase at all times, it's part of the suitcase....it is nothing but a nylon jacket from a track suit has kept me warm and protected me from rain from Hong Kong to Florida to sailing trips that I expected would be hot but turned out cold&rainy...never failed me, even in the most dire circumstances. <I cust myself 4 times today (band-saw, glass, paper cut, you name it)....used up the entire band-Aid box and still need more. The Johnny Cash version of trent reznor's song 'Hurt' is now running though my head. V So.....how has your summer been so far? Has you year lived up to expectations?

Cap't William, no reason why that shouldn't be the case. All boats and ships have what is known as "hull speed", that is the maximum speed that the ship can move. It doesn't matter whether the engine is 300 hp or 30, 000 hp, the boat can't go any faster. Those who understand marine architecture or boat design know what I'm talking about. Speed boats can go fast because they plane on the water....thus less displacement. Same with modern military cutters and frigates that have narrow hulls, or fast ferries that have 2 narrow hulls (basically a catamaran) which is why ferries like the AtlantiCAT are called such. It's all a matter of displacement (the amount of hull in the water). That being said, a sailing ship can achieve the same speed as a motor-driven ship, and possibly faster if heeling causes enough of hull to leave water. Helps to have a good wind too!

In my opinion, there is only*one* way to cook bacon (Canadians and non-Americans not withstanding)...that is to cook bacon only in the broiler oven...and crisp. I swear by Almighty God, that oven broiling is a far superior taste than your usual frying pan. Now, on a different note. ........... We are Pyrates! That being said, we eat seafood, You eat it or you die!...life on the high seas, no refirgeration=seafood diet (my apologies for those who are adverse to eating living swimming creatures and also those who are allergic to such). My dear old dad's ( that bloody old sod can't do nuthin but talk about it, I swear) pride and joy is Angels On Horseback. ...basically broiled oyster wrapped in bacon. Here is the recipe for those interested: Angels On Horseback

Royaliste, you will have to inform us via this board or somehow, when you are making passage our way before you arrive in SC. The Royaliste website schedule is, as I would say......not exactly informative. Happy voyage and safe passage in the meantime.

You are always welcome, BriarRose. Methinks that hth names of the true ships of the pirate era would have been endowed with more creative&sexy names. Incidentally, I laughed when Disney named the first POTC after what I know in my world is the Black Pearl Restaurant in Newport, R.I, named after a brigantine: Black Pearl

]Nay, Pyrateleather, I swear that ain't quite right, particularly the V-hem a the bottom looks too 1770-ish. Kass McGann site sells something closer to the proper period: Sailor's jacket And so does Jarnagin (scroll halfway down):Seaman's waistcoat

Well, first don't get excited, this isn't reenactor stuff, nor is it real flame. I saw the broadway show Mamma Mia in New York City a while back, and at some point the entire cast was holding these candles, which were really LED candles, not flame. The effect, from a distance, was mind-boggling. They look like real flickering flame, and not the cheapo bulbs with the alternating filament. I think the application for these things is unlimited, such as holiday time (christmas trees, windows), backyard luau, or just general atmosphere lighting. i am planning on getting some for halloween. For those who want the flames without the fuss, wax, and hazards, just know they're out there, I don't care which brandLED candles

I'm going to start a new thread here, so either it works or it doesn't . I'm curious if anyone really believes in such a thing, and if so, what have you done to go green? For instance, for myself, I have done, or considering the following: -installed a number of fluourescent light bulbs to replace incandescent bulbs (except for the bathroom and a living room light because of the 1 mimute warm-up delay)...this is 40% less power. -I travel the eastern seaboard US by train....we are electrified here. The highways here are parking lots (from Boston to DC) on a friday afternoon anyway. Trains are a fraction of energy vs. people per car. -I'm strongly considering a work commute vehicle such as a Chevy Aveo or a Toyota Yaris (You european folks are laughing at us , I know) -I spoke with IslandCutter last week, and he was suggesting vegetable oil as a replacement for diesel. That's a lot of chinese restaurants to visit to pick up fuel. FYI, once I spoke to a guy who motored from Atlantic City, NJ to Harborplace, Baltimore, Md on his jet-turbine cigarette boat. He bragged that it cost him $5000 for fuel for the ride over....as if everyone everyone was Merv Griffin. I told him that sail costs nothing....forever.
