  1. My deep regrets to Mr. Red Wake, but perhaps another opportunity to meet some other time/place. I, however, will be in KW for the event, and couldn't miss the op since I have family in Pt. Charlotte, Fl, and it's so easy to jump on the boat to to Key West from Ft Myers. Beats flying. I'm still rounding up parts of my outfit, I can't sew for shit's worth, so I'm having some very qualified people who specialize in reenactor threads to put it together. I'm afraid that I won't have much in the way of weaponry on a count that I am flying into Ft Myers from New Jersey via JetBlue, and already I had a metal plate screwed into a broken wrist last month, and we all know how much of a fun party those TSA screeners are. Someday, I'll get a nice cutlass or black powder pistol. Anyway, anyone from Baltimore/DC/Penn/NJ/ New England showing up (ladies esp)? Say...this past summer, I was driving down thames in Newport, RI and I saw a seaman in red greatcoat, bucket boots & tricorn hat...ring a bell to anyone?
  2. I booked Jetblue from NYC to Ft Myers ($230 RT), then I'm taking the Key West Express Ferry from Ft Myers for $119 RT heres' the link : http://www.seakeywestexpress.com/default3.htm
  3. Where is the HMS Rose berthed these days? If anyone recalls, this was the ship used in the film Master & Commander. I specifically have fond memories of seeing this ship quite frequently back in the 80's in Bridgeport, Ct when i went to college there. Then, it was painted yellow, minus the Great cabin that was added for the movie.
  4. If you can, buy a tent and join us in the fort. We would be ever so glad to have you there. a pair of simple slops, a simple shirt and a sash is all that separates you from joining in the fun. I went around barefoot most of the time I was there last year. William Red Wake I think I might take you up on that offer, mate . I just found out I have 8 vacation days left for the year and I gotta 'use 'em before I lose 'em. As far as period threads, I know a couple of sources...real deal.
  5. Any suggestions for non-Reenactors such as myself to come soak up the fun? I'll be there more as a spectator. I've seen the PIP website already, but I'm looking for some inside info from some of you more experienced brethren. I was down in KW last April and since family is in Pt Charlotte, Fl., we took the Key West Express ferry from Ft. Myers....a 3 ½ hr ride, That's the way to go.
  6. Gibson and Fuse TV are giving away an autographed version of an SG guitar but the photo of what looks like a 70's Elvis version of an SJ-200 but in the same brown mohogany as the captain's cabin of the Black Pearl, how much is this thing worth? http://www.ohjohnny.net/potc2/potc2341.jpg
  7. Like the movie "Office Space" http://www.youtube.com/results?search=pira...s&search=Search
  8. I'm makin' ye passage from Ft. Myers to Key West either Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving.. Someone told me KeyWest Express catamaran ferry has a special deal $69 o/w from Ft Myers....anyone doing this?
  9. I know one thing...the American Revolution started with the burning of the HMS Gaspee in 1772 in Narragansett bay in Rhode Island, which happened what was then known as Namquid Point. (now Gaspee point) The HMS Gaspee was pretty much the scourge of piracy between New York and Boston. Basically, a bunch of local "privateers" launched a night attack aboard the Gaspee, swordfights and all, then shot the captain Lt. Dudingston rights quare in the family jewels, and set alight the ship. Rhode Island was pretty much a pirate's nest, given the fact that Newport (Hometown of Thomas Tew, and stopover port for Kidd and Bellamy) is separated from the mainland, and the pirates could sail out at a moment's notice into the open ocean. This site has all the info: http://www.gaspee.org/
  10. Hmmm, great concepts! I thought when a dead body is submerged in water for a long time, 'adipocere' usually set in. But these look close.
  11. Here's a good rum site: http://www.avirtualdominica.com/rum.htm
  12. Strike Two. Well....at least she isn't sunk like Pride of Baltimore I. That leaves only one capable privateer vessel in the bay...the Sultana.
  13. **This site is a must! http://www.ministryofrum.com/ they got a tasting forum and everything. I like Pusser's British Navy Rum, this is 95.5 proof industrial stregnth straight-forward business the way Lord Nelson wanted it...the closest you'll ever get to the real deal. However, for 'Cuba Libre' type coctails, it has a but of a rugged, but not offensive palate ....just a tad potent. My favorite is Flor de Cana 7 year rum. ...great straight up! My most hated is Plantation Rum Barbados...smells like rotting daffodils.
  14. Somethings never change....just the time & place. I find it ironic that the victim was the vessel MV Miltzow...hailing from the same place as the filming of 'Pirates of the Caribbean 1' http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051013/ap_on_.../somalia_piracy
  15. Unless pirates hijacked a merchant vessel coming from China, silk was not really that readily available. Silk only came from one place: China. Most of that fabric was of the kind to make robes, you know, with all the dragon embroidery...not the sheer lacy stuff used in today's undergarments.
  16. I've had similar fantasies but not of the pirate kind. Get to know your vintage clothier. I'm involved with 40's/50's music myself and I have amassed a large collection of vintage clothing of that period. I'm a bit over that phase of "living the era" except for stage wear but, it was fun. People looked at me funny but I was dliberately trying to get their attention. it really messed with the old people who used to dress that way back in the day. Of course you will have a hard time finding anything made aroud 17th/18th century and I'd worry that such clothes would disintegrate but having a real article of something that was around and used during the pirate era....that is the closest connection you will ever get. The other end of the coin is you're living a fantasy. Well....we all are, aren't we? Except, I think of high school where kids were dressing goth, you know, with the ruffly poet shirts and eyeliner. To me, it just didn't seem real. The bottom line is...are you doing this to satisfy yourself or to entertain other people. careful not to get the two confused.
  17. I'm curious to know often are the props in the Depp film the real deal? I know that in P1, johnny's pistol was of late 18th century vintage but others were replicas. I also saw some recent photos of Depp & Rush with aincient accoutrements like belt buckles and I am curious to know if they are the real thing. Seems to me that there is plenty of finds for antiques, though I would imagine, not cheaply procured.
  18. I have been to an island in the Chesapeake bay called Tangier island. You can only get there by boat. I have noticed that many of the native residents speak with a cornwall english accent. From my understanding, they have been speaking this way about 300 years. It's really not even Americanized. I guess this would not be too far off from the 1950's Disney movie pirate Robert Newton. But they pronounce "house" as if almost rhymed with "noose". The island itself is a crabbing port and many of the houses are on stilts because of the island's low altitude.

  20. In regards to shooting at alternate sites, I read that Gasparilla island in Florida's gulf coast was considered, this was mentioned here below the Kieth Richards photo: http://www.ohjohnny.net/potc2/potc2news25.html Too bad if they're not shooting there. I'm in Pt Charlotte/Boca Grande area about 4 times a year. I'd be there in a flash. I would have suggested filming in Cayo Costa State Park, which is an island north of Sanibel island and south of Gasparilla island. Cayo Costa is one of the last few unmolested undeveloped unsuburbanized ancient Florida spots.
  21. The cameras are a rollin' on the deck of the Black Pearl once again! Today, I hear of night scenes as filming of POTC2 resumes. Check out http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/index.html drink me hearties! Rye-Oh!
