  1. Jack, there be miles t' go before we sail her. Yeah, the hull's going to be glassed... it goes on right over the wood. It works because the wood no longer moves like wood... it's bonded to the glass. So it acts just like a fiberglass boat.
  2. Hmm... looking at the pictures... we always see her starboard side! I guess the port side was the one that wasn't built.
  3. After fast-forwarding my way through the movie... there's not too much more than what's been posted here. Long shots are just not too popular with the director. Maybe it's because the Pearl is a barge?
  4. Nice gif. I'll see if I can remember to frame-grab from the DVD when I get home.
  5. Cap'n... I know the crew expressed their birthday wishes at the circus thing... but can't help to have more! Happy Birthday!!! Ye and yer ship have given me a chance to do what we all have been dreaming of since we were kids. And for that, I thank ye.
  6. Be this the same as the Discovery channel "search for Cap'n Kidd"?
  7. Alright all o' ye... pictures! The wheel. The boat... as it stood about a half-hour ago. Detail of the seam glassing. The bottom o' the boat. It's held on by steel wire at the moment, soon to be held on by fiberglass. I've got more if ye want em. Email me or PM me, or just post.
  8. ARRR! Now that be a right fine piratey day! Sign me up fer both events on Saturday!
  9. Hmm.... Museum says you? Sailin' says Cap'n... What be the times o' these two worthwhile piratey adventures?
  10. This deckhand be ready to cast off and haul outta port... jus' say the word!
  11. *joins in the conga line... then realizes that he can do somethin' about it* Pictures tonight, hopefully!
  12. Link to the Cannon I'm considering Thought I'd post this. Once she's built, I'll start saving fer armaments. This'll be first on the list.
  13. update today: our ship's wheel arrived... solid teak with a brass core! And only $25! The bottom is also on the boat.... we're fiberglassing the seams now. Pictures when I get a chance!
  14. Ye might try the 18th Century work shirt from Jas. Townsend. Then you could dye it whatever color ye be wantin'. I love mine, but make sure to remember that they run "tent-sized" as the lady on the phone told me. I wear a Townsend large very comfortably (not an XL), and I'm 6'4" and about 230 lbs.
  15. I don't have a name for her yet. Anyone got any thoughts? One of my thoughts is "peridinos", Greek for "circling around", and also a euphemism for pirate, rogue, or corsair. From Plato's Laws: "not to speak of the crimes of all sorts committed by the “Corsairs,” as they are called, who haunt the coasts of Italy, and the reprisals therefor." (and for anyone interested... "hosa kaka sumbainei, kai eti ta tôn legomenôn peridinôn tôn peri tên Italian gignomenôn pantodapa klôpôn erga te kai pathêmata.") I'm thinking about writing a paper on the role of pirates in classic literature.
  16. Probably Dacron. And a word on the cotton... it's liable to rot if you're storing it for long stretches. Regarding the epoxy: we're taping the seams with 4" tape (had to get it from TAP plastics, a specialty plastic and fiberglass store). Then we're using either 50" or 60" cloth across the bottom (I don't remember which). That'll take care of below the waterline. Above the waterline will be a thin sheet of oak covering the plywood. This is for a couple of reasons. The first is to avoid the cost of extra 'glass. The second is for aesthetics; it'll look a lot better. We'll be coating it with varathane (clear coating) to make it waterproof for when the boat is heeling.
  17. Sailors who have crossed the equator are known as shellbacks. Sailors crossing the equator and the date line at the same time are called Golden Shellbacks.
  18. Framing of the hull is done! Pictures here!
  19. Penny--- I wanna see a picture of ye as Dawn. I'm a big fan of Linsner and of Dawn! My uncle's got a couple o' originals hanging in his loft; they're beautiful.
  20. Relax! I was just asking, and it was just a little gentle fun-poking. And besides, I have no way of knowing whether or not you have a personal boat. About the half-galley... sounds great. I'd love to see pictures of it and the smaller fiberglass one you're building. And in any case... I think we're all in this for the same reason: to have fun (if it wasn't fun, why would we do it at all?), and to learn a little about history and our own inner character. I will never go out for the SOLE purpose of educating the public. I'll go out for my own enjoyment and for the sake of how I'd like to spend my precious Saturdays. As fer insulting people about their lack of a life.... I'm spending mine doing exactly what I want to be doing. And nothing could possibly feel better. Like Royaliste said, I wasn't looking for grief... I didn't even see anything in this post to get you riled up in the first place. Just a captain and crew excited about an event and looking for ways to make it happen.
  21. What's yer boat like? I read on your crew's website that you still have some fiberglass work to do... and nothing says period like fiberglass boats! ...that said, I've got some glass work to do on my own boat (onna other hand, it's not a period boat...)
  22. 'appy birthday, mate! Yer a great crewmate.
  23. I tend to go for more of a quiet and understated ...arrr... then a ARRRR!!! (although I've blown my voice many a time at parades doing the latter). My friends tend to make fun of me for arrr-ing when something pleases me or angers me, but... PIRATE!
  24. If'n yonder printers will take TIFF files (pretty common in printing), this download'll be ~14 megs smaller than the behemoth in the last link. Still lossless compression so there's no drop in resolution or quality at all. TIFF (Same quality but smaller)
