It's that time again, the second Friday of the month, and time for sea chanteys on the Wawona. Actually, they'll probably be in the carpenters' shed, unless the weather is stunningly lovely. This month, the great Hank Cramer will be leading the sing. With his great, booming voice, he's a natural for this kind of music, and his stories are hilarious. There's never a cover charge for these events, but donations to defray expenses are welcome, and there will be concessions for sale at the break. All are welcome, and new voices and singers are encouraged. For more information, check out www.nwseaport.org Fair winds, a song in the sails and a full tankard, Trapper

Anyone familiar with the theme from Popeye the cartoon? Well before the actual popeye the sailor man song starts, in the old cartoons, there was a small song part that played before the popeye song kicked in. Does anyone know what that song is??? I'm pretty sure its a pirate song, or sea-faring song. If not, then its probably a folk tune of some sort. I cant find a song clip to link what I'm talking about, nor do I have a title to what that first song is. All I know is that I have heard it in other places before as its own song. I am involved in making a video game called Pirates, Vikings, and Knights, 2, which is a game that pits all 3 groups against one another. I…

I just wanted to write to let you pirates know about a fantastic sea song band from Newfoundland, named Great Big Sea. They really are one of the best I've ever heard, with a mix of traditional and modern songs. You can buy their albums on Amazon, though I got them cheaper through Amazon.ca (Amazon Canada), even with international shipping added in.

Here... I got some lyrics from Capt'n Slappy! (He made it himself, and it goes te thar tune of OH SUSANA! I'M A PIRATE! by Cap'n Slappy Oh, a pirate's life is free from strife his journey to begin without a troubled, nagging wife a keepin' him from sin. I've set me sails, I've got me peg, a compass and tattoo, a parrot I call "Pauly" and a sword to run ye through. CHORUS: I'm A PIRATE! Now Don't Give Me No Sass! Or, I'll walk up right behind ye, lad, and kick ye in the ass! Thars a nor-east blowin' in me face a gail comin' this way. We'll stay right here and drink some more, ship out another day. And the wenches they do make me smile I think they bring…

Just wanted t' drop a line that Tom Lewis, a great shantey singer and songwriter, 25 year veteran of Her Majesty's Royal Navy, will be in town Friday, March 5th, at the Highliner Pub, Fishermans Terminal. He's mainly going to be there to listen to the band that's playing, but they'll be havin' him up on stage for a few numbers. There's no cover charge, so if ye wants t' see him in a more casual settin' than a proper gig, this is the place. An' if'n ye'd like more info on the man, be headin' t' www.tomlewis.net. I just heard this one from a Baird at the Estrella War. Loved it...have been searching the internet for it...haven't found it. Any pyriates out there know where it can be found as you have already been there? It went something like this. A good man is hard to find. A hard man is good to find. You can kiss me if you are so inclined, but I'm sailing away in the morning.

20,000 leagues inder the sea ain't exactly pirate material, BUT there is a lot of water and plunder and sea monster goins on... Anywho, there is song sung by Kirk Douglas' character Ned Land with a turtle-shell banjo and a barking seal, I think it's called Whale of a Tale. They even worked the tune into the score! Even though Ned sings this ditty about 87 times in the movie, I can't remember the middle part of the lyrics. Sure, I could look it up online, but I thought it would be more fun to ask me associates to provide the missin' words. Here goes: Got a whale of a tale to tell ya', lads, a whale of tale or two, 'bout a.... (da da dee dee da da doo, etc.)insert co…

All You Pretty Girls Andy Partridge From the XTC album "The Big Express" Do something for me, boys If I should die at sea, boys Write a little note, boys Set it off afloat, saying Chorus: Bless you, bless you, all of you pretty girls Village and city girls by the quayside Bless you, bless you, all of you pretty girls Watching and waiting by the sea Bless you, bless you, all of you pretty girls Quiet or witty girls by the quayside Bless you, bless you, all of you pretty girls Watching and waiting by the sea I think about your pale arms waving When I see the caps upon the green And the rocking roller-coaster ocean Think about you every ni…

The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire is extremely Pirate friendly. Their 2003 season reflected this most notably with a Pirate Weekend and with sea shanties taking a larger role in their Finale In Song. I picked up both the 2003 and 2002 CDs at the Faire this summer, and cannot stop playing them. They are fantastic! The PA Ren Faire is now offering them for sale for $15 each, and they're well worth it. You can see the information here: PA Ren Faire and you can order them by calling (717) 665-7021, ext. 129, or by stopping by the Carriage House Wine Shop at the Mt. Hope Winery, in Manheim, PA. The track listings are: SONGS OF SAILORS AND SIRENS (2003) Wild Rover Chand…

OK. Just woke up after a night of dreamin' of the sea...and of pirates. Thought I needed some appropriate music, so I checked my CD library...what did I find? The Blessing is the band (William Topley ring any bells?). Prince of the Deep Water is the name of the CD. Popped it into the stereo...turned up the volume. Dogs watching me with terror in their eyes...God, I remember why I loved it so much....There's not a bad track on the album...and there's most definately a pirate mystique... Just a little sample from "Hurricane-Room" See me wistful in some harbour bar I tend the warm glass and the duelling scar I sing my misappropriation song for lovers land-locked far…

I heard the Mermaid Song every Friday morning of my youth, thanks to a DJ on an obnoxious Central NJ radio station. He would play this every Friday morning, because of the opening lyrics. I was thrilled to find it on a CD put out by the performers of the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire. They do a fine cover of the song (the performance of the ship's cook must be heard to be believed!) but the lyrics were a bit different than I had remembered. I've included a slightly different version below. Has anyone heard any variations of this song? The Mermaid Song Twas Friday morn when we set sail And we were not far from the land When the captain, he spied a lovely mermaid …

The local theater is lookin' for people to play ol' pirate jigs & sea shanties. Unfortunately, no fiddle have I.. but I do have a wooden recorder. Anyone have a few good ol' sea shanties that can be used? The director is lookin' for more peeps to be in a play of Treasure Island. Hehehe... I suppose the trademark song for TI 'bottle o' rum' would be good as well as "pirates life for me".. anyone have it in a format for a recorder? Again.. as well as any quick ones to learn for a recorder.

Hey -- does anyone know where I might be able to DL free sheet music on the web? Specifically, I really want to download the ol' Disney tune "A Pirate's Life For Me," and I *know* there's places on the web when free sheet music can be downloaded, but I can't find any of 'em. I have found places where I could just buy the book of "Disney Collected Songs" or whatever the title is that has "Pirate's Life" included in it -- but it's always in a book of sheet music something like two hundred pages long, and I _really_ don't want to dish out thirty bucks for the big book when the only thing I want from it is the (probably) one-page-long song somewhere in the middle. So if yo…

He's A Pirate Here is someone's unofficial transcription, created from the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack. This one is intended for violin, so it just gives the treble clef and includes bowing and fingering notations.
