Whale of a Tale

Recommended Posts

20,000 leagues inder the sea ain't exactly pirate material, BUT there is a lot of water and plunder and sea monster goins on...

Anywho, there is song sung by Kirk Douglas' character Ned Land with a turtle-shell banjo and a barking seal, I think it's called Whale of a Tale.

They even worked the tune into the score!

Even though Ned sings this ditty about 87 times in the movie, I can't remember the middle part of the lyrics. Sure, I could look it up online, but I thought it would be more fun to ask me associates to provide the missin' words.

Here goes: Got a whale of a tale to tell ya', lads,

a whale of tale or two, 'bout a....

(da da dee dee da da doo, etc.)insert correct words here

.. a whale of a tale, and it's all true. I swear by my tatoo!

Thank Ya very much. I'll be here all week.

This question was asked a couple months ago; here's the answer I posted:

A Whale of a Tale

From: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Music: Al Hoffman and Norman Gimbel

Lyrics: Al Hoffman and Norman Gimbel

***********

Got a whale of a tale to tell ya, lads

A whale of a tale or two

'Bout the flappin' fish and the girls I've loved

On nights like this with the moon above

A whale of a tale and it's all true

I swear by my tattoo

There was Mermaid Minnie, met her down in Madagaskar

She would kiss me, any time that I would ask her

Then one evening her flame of love blew out

Blow me down and pick me up!

She swapped me for a trout

Got a whale of a tale to tell ya, lads

A whale of a tale or two

'Bout the flappin' fish and the girls I've loved

On nights like this with the moon above

A whale of a tale and it's all true

I swear by my tattoo

There was Typhoon Tessie, met her on the coast of Java

When we kissed I bubbled up like molten lava

Then she gave me the scare of my young

Blow me down and pick me up!

She was the captain's wife

Got a whale of a tale to tell ya, lads

A whale of a tale or two

'Bout the flappin' fish and the girls I've loved

On nights like this with the moon above

A whale of a tale and it's all true

I swear by my tattoo

Aye indeed there were!

Hannah made her appearance in the actual film version of the song. The Lyrics Pirate Queen posted were an alternate version (which was available on a children's storybook record released about the same time as the movie). Here are the lyrics!

The was Harpoon Hannah. Had a face that made you shudder...

Lips like fish hooks, and anose just like a rudder!

If I kissed her and held her tenderly,

There was no other sea monster who could ever frighten me!

YARRR! The Oktober be silent now! Just call me "REDD!"

CHORUS:

Got a whale of a tale to tell ya', lads

A whale of a tale or two

'Bout the flappin' fish and the girls I've loved

On nights like this with the moon above

A whale of a tale and it's all true

I swear by my tattoo

There was Mermaid Minnie, met her down in Madagaskar

She would kiss me, any time that I would ask her

Then one evening her flame of love blew out

Blow me down and pick me up!

She swapped me for a trout.

CHORUS

There was Typhoon Tessie, met her on the coast of Java

When we kissed I, bubbled up like molten lava

Then she gave me, the scare of my young life

Blow me down and pick me up!

She was the captain's wife.

CHORUS

There was Harpoon Hannah, had a face that made me shudder

Lips like fishhooks, and a nose just like a rudder

Since I kissed her, and held her tenderly,

There's no sea monster big enough

To ever frighten me.

CHORUS

There was Hannah's sister, had a look that spelled out "Danger"

My heart quivered, when she whispered "Hi there, stranger"

Bought her trinkets, that sailors can't afford

And when I spent my last red cent

She threw me overboard
