Okay then folks.... Here it is, the (un)official 2008 Pirates in Paradise car pool thread. I'll start. Kate, myself, Nick and Ashley will likely be leaving from central Ohio Wednesday evening I'm guessing it will likely be between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM by the time we get home from work, get organized and get going. Mapquest has the drive at 21 hours. With such a long drive, we will not likely want to go very far out of the way... But I'm guessing we could go a little out of the way, specially if it helps save some funds. Mapquest has us mostly on I-77 for the first few hundred miles, and then on I-95 for the bulk of the rest of the journey... We have room for up to three p…

Hi there everyone! First off, I'd like to introduce myself, I'm Audrey (and somewhere around here is Brian, my hubby) we live in Fort Myers, and had the chance to meet some amazing folks the other night at the Pirate Festival down by the beach here, which lead us here to you guys! (Poor fools!) Any how, we learned of PiP while there and because of the helpfulness and over all kindness of the men and woman at the festival here, we both decided that we would give PiP a go this year. (Any excuse to get down to Key West is a good one; I took my first steps there and plan to take my last!) With that said I had a few questions. (Hold onto your bootstraps) I was wonderin…

As most of you know, I cannot attend until I finish my education and get my first job as a teacher. I desperately want to be a part of this somehow, so in a rum induced thought session, I had this idea. Those of you who attend will know the logistics and whether this will work or not. I would build a sea-chest of a common swab, and include a few hand-made items that are period. I will then ship the chest and items to either Harry at the fort, or a designated attendee who would be willing to handle the task of pulling this off. Anyone else that is handy and wished to contribute to the chest would be encouraged to do so. At PiP, the "death of a sailor" would be announ…

In the interest of not bogging down the crew thread, here is the place to tell me what you want or make comments and suggestions. To give me enough time to make these items, everyone has until Sept 1st to tell me what they want. No doubt I will have extra available at PIP as well. ***Please note, official orders for PIP is over. If you would still like to order an item, I will do my best to have it finished by then, but no guarantees. Most items will be made out of 18.5 oz hemp. Any lining will be linen. Following is a list of items I can make for the crew: Haversacks (hemp/lined) Finished size 12" x 14" Snapsacks (hemp/unlined) Seabags (hemp/unlined) Finished s…

Here's something cool we could do that should be fairly simple to prepare in advance and yet still add depth to the event. I a living history display would be extremely cool at PiP. We could put something together at the event using the particular characters, roles and skills like we have been discussing in the Mercury Crew Thread. Something like this page that I put together on my website from a recent event: http://www.markck.com/images/Piracy/BB08/B...al_Ch_Fifth.htm It would not be scripted or anything that will require meeting in advance. It'd be more of a self-guided tour through an area where we re-enactors explain our roles and tools. There are various stations …

Ahoy all, The Daytona Crew has been practicing with African drums, drum circles and belly dancing and would like to set up in a small corner of the fort for some interactive fun. People would be free to join in either drumming, shakers, etc and belly dancing if they are brave enough. We have extra drums, shakers, bells etc. Children and adults love to join in and it would offer a way for onlookers and participants to come together for some fun. Any opinions, ideas or suggestions? Hi Everyone..... We are a "Pirate Themed" SANDSCULPTING TEAM. We are Master Sculpters, Award Winning and we are looking for a location to make a Pirate themed sandsculpture at the Pirates in Paradise Festival in Key West this year. A 20 to 30 foot square area; parking lot, pool side, beach, side lot, etc. is all we need to sculpt out of sand an outstanding crowd attracting, attention getting, people pleasing, award winning SANDSCULPTURE free of charge. Sand sculptures attract unbelievable media coverage. See us at the Fort Myers Beach Pirate Festival and the St. Thomas Virgin Islands Pirate Festival.....

Greetings all! For those who haven't been at PiP or were passed out last year, I thought I'd let you know what we're doing this year over at the buccaneer camp. It will be a year later than last (duh!) so it will be 1681. We will once again be doing the Catt & Fiddle Tavern, at the corner of Lime and Queen in the heart of the dock are of Port Royal. This year, we will be making the bar area even better, doing more historical games and having a couple fights each day in the pub. Plus, I am planning to do my historical presentation on Port Royal in the evenings after it gets a little darker. I did it initially a PyrateCon and everyone there keeps asking me to do it …

anyone bring their dog to PiP ?? are pets even allowed ??? the main reason i am asking is because i don't think our new dog would fair well at a local kennel hotel for a few weeks. we ended up with her because she was "unadoptable" at the local humane society. she tore up 2 or 3 cages (don't remember the total) , acted nuts, and nobody who saw that wanted her.... hence, she was to be put to sleep. ...can't spell euthenized (sp.?) since then she has settled down nicely....we just have to make sure she gets some excersize..... loves playing fetch !! , give her some love, and all is grand.... but, i don't think she would do well in a more restrained enviroment..…

Greeatings Brethren, Last year the parade on Saturday evening seemed to be a great success. I want to open this thread to ask for comments, ideas, constructive criticism, or collaboration for 08' By my count we had close to 80 pyrates on foot and on the ship. It looks like there shall be many more this year. One note: The SFP crew carried our swords and pistols in the parade. All securely peace tied I might add. Shortly after we arrived on Duval St. and the parade disperssed, we had an encounter with one of the King's constables. He was less than polite and wanted to put us all in the brigg unless the weapons disappeared instantly. He also informed us that he was …

I don't know if this would work or not... But what if we had a compitition, knot tying (we'd have to teach how to tie knots first), relay race with bags of (fake ) Powder, that sorta thing... The winner would get a scroll proclaiming them Powder Monkey of the Year, and get to pull the lanyard to fire a real cannon. OK, I can see a few problems with this idea, But we should be able to figure out a safe way to do it. (a realy LONG lanyard.....) But hey... a big time newspaper photo/news op, and imagine how you would have felt as a kid to fire a real cannon.

wife and i are toying with the idea of attending PiP. since we will be bringing all the kids, we would probably take the inlaw's RV. some questions are; is there a campground nearby? how close is the PiP festival and the fort ??? are they 2 separate locations, near eachother, or what ??? if we go, we would want things to keep the children entertained, as well as ourselves. the fort would be ideal for the kids, as well as all the attractions, the beach, etc. any simple comments from those who kinda know their way around ??? tia

Ok, this thread is for suggestions for next year only. No big long rememberances of PiPs past, just concise thoughts and discussion for next year. Let the games begin.. I'll start. For the careening camp: Keep all the camp together as a semi-circle facing the parking lot. Keep the camp cooking at the heart of the semi-circle. Erect some flagpoles at the fort-side edge of the trees for flying pyrate crew flags (to attract attention from the fort and for crew recognition) Keep bell time in the camp with a big bell (to attract attention from the fort)(10 to 5 only: someone rings that damn bell at 7 AM and I'll do an impromptu gun demo) Have gun demos at …

These are some of my first postings so please be patient. I am an ER RN (when not the pirate wench) and my husband a Paramedic (when not sailing the open seas and flying our skull and crossbones, we live on a sailboat) and we would like to volunteer our services next year at PIP '08. We attended '07 and loved it. We can be in authentic garb and are anxious to join in. Let us know what steps to take next. Keep to the Code, FLmermaid

I am instigating interest in establishing a careening camp a la the PIP Mercury camp at a local NW pyrate weekend. I would appreciate any and all advice, stories, warnings, tales, and anecdotes yall have to offer. I would most appreciate to hear from he organizers of the PIP careening camp, especially regarding as to their expectations going into the creation of such an encampment, the joys and difficulties encountered, and any and all advice their experience has to offer. In case I have not so far made it clear: I am open to all input regarding this subject! I want to know what goes into making a great historical reenactment!
