How Do You FEEL Now?

Good captain sterling. I would hate to see a fine a man as yourself hobbling around the field of battle at PIP. Might i offer my services and build you a wagon of four wheels where you may be properly pulled around. I'm sure Rats Or Mad dogge will tend to you. Why I'll even throw in a couple pads of straw so you do not fatigue your nether regions as you watch the world go by. I think I even have a flower sack you can use as a shawl to keep the cold night air of Key West from enflaming the lungs. I'll even offer you a shore side retirement.. there is a herd of sheep that need tending to........

Dutchie, when I first broke my right foot, I went a year and a half not knowing that it had never healed in the first place... not surprising, British doctors put the cast on which broke across the bottom that same night at dinner..(don't ask). I continued to ride, hunt, walk, run and fence the entire duration without a hitch, until it suddenly went numb. Off to my brother's podiatrist (he's a competitive long distance runner) and low and behold I had a 1 1/4" space still between the bones...it never knitted… so surgery and a bit of fishing line and I was back together again...ahem... until I broke it again the following week at a wedding (don't ask)... back in for a second operation.

During the operation I kept telling the doc, that I could feel what he was doing… no pain, just knew when he was actually touching the bone…he said I was imagining it, did a few tests to prove me wrong and proved me right instead. Seems my body burns off pain blockers in 15mins or less along with a high pain threshold, he told me I was a doctor’s nightmare. Any way…

Well now it seems some where along the way in the past ten years I broke my left foot as well... can't imagine when or how, unless it was kicking a wall, when I should have been kicking Cheeky (don't ask).. At RF 4, this past Feb. it started to get annoying. I thought maybe the buckle on the shoe had shifted and was just presing uncomfortably on the top of my foot. Went to the doctor for damaged tendons in my wrist (thanks to the dog) and asked him to take a look at the foot as well...

He told my left foot was broken, had been for awhile, and never healed….I just rolled my eyes.

Any way to make a long story short, now seems tis time to put the left one back together with fishing line and surgery as well as the right one... But as far as being carted about in a wagon... Tis not going to happen, I’ve managed this long, I will continue to do so, with or without the surgery (Pip and its costs come first, after getting a price check, the surgery will most likely wait) I will, unlike you, still be going to PiP and still be doing my full routine. I think the best is to hobble about Reenactor Fest in Feb. after surgery.

Since you wimped out for PiP, maybe, Mistress Nancy, you can drive me to Chicago in the winter…

Ah stuborn broken foot stories...

I broke mine in three places one night... as my friends tell it t'was my confirmed bachelor party as me first fiance left the night before- a bit of stage fright i guess. anyhow, i was good and souced (was after the witch doctors brew), fell (passed out, whatever) backwards off the second story balcony rail, but was saved by my foot that held me hanging by a rail spindle until i was recovered by the local fire department. jolly nice fellows, glad i already knew them, else i would have been toted to the E.R. by my own medic unit. That would have been sad..... anyhow. my endearing friends decided i was best off passed out on the couch. I awoke the next morning and realizing SOMETHING of importace had happened to my foot and I wandered off to the hospital where i had a friend X-ray said swollen hoof. sure nuf- three places. The E. R. doc wanders in and says "oh dutch- thats going to need a cast" Well i was still pissed off about wasting a bit of coin on that ring so out the door and back to work I went. I strapped my foot into my boot and hobbled around as EMS Sprint Supervisor for six weeks while it healed.

Back to the issue at hand............................................................................

I never whiiiiiiined about it. So would you like tafita around the edges of the cart?

Poor Sterling.

Honestly can't seem to understand the broken foot bit. Tis always my ankles that give me more troubles especially the right one since that got run over by a car! and now m' knees after jumping off horses for 2 years (damnit). And the right hip after falling down atop cement stairs!

Yeah, I'm a bill of health.

Welp, here's t' hoping ye get better soon, Sterling.

Now... we don't want to have ye endin' up like John Silver now.. hobblin' about upon a crutch!

Likewise, Dutch. Fix those feet, mates.

Silkie! Hey! Girl! Ye headin' out on the Kalmar?!?!? damnit! Lucky you! Take me with you! I'll bring Magellan! He likes to travel!

Was annoyed earlier for lack of communication from a group who wanted me at some Pirate gathering. Well, someone finally got back to me. But still at a loss of what I should bring.

A little mellow now. Doing laundry and sewing as well as on here getting some stuff done. Might run out to get black dye for the shoes if the only shoe place in town is open. I hate the floods.

Ahhh, poor Sterling. Do you think you should wait to get yer foot fixed? If there be any thing I can do just let me know.

Feel better. Hugs.

Awww... poor Sterling. For get the target ducks at the Fair! Oh, look.. it's a new game for Pirate Fests... shoot th' Pyrate Hunter!

Ahhh, ye know we love ya Sterlin'.

Just... watch out fo' those rounds!

As to the cavalry, hell WAY too easy to bust a foot! If ye don't hurt it when ye dismount, then it's by the horse stepping on it! Or other things. Yeah, Infantry has it bleedin' easy! Blighters.

Aye, Rumba... I'm with Syren.

And Syren... ye best be tellin' lass... what projects?

Oooo! Excited cause I found out my plates I've been using for reenactments I am now also using them at home and wanting to get the bowls now. Well, come to find out that there are more to this Pfaltzgraff Village ware - a couple types of mug, etched glass, utensil holders, salt and pepper shakers, milk bottles, pitchers, soup tureens, serving plates, bread plates, etc. Oh, the list goes on and on! Found LOTS of it on eBay. My dilemma is on eBay... the shipping is more than the price of the items. But, I haven't had much luck around here finding these particular items I need. I really needed the bowls cause I couldn't find them. I have the dinner plates and the small salad plates and the tankard style mugs. And one of the small coffee/tea cups. So, I need LOT more! :) Plan to use them both at home and at events, too. Will need A LOT more than what I have now.

So between finding my set, dying the shoes, and finishing up chores,... I'm good. :)

At the rate I'm going, I most likely won't be there...

But if I do, hope not to disappoint as I won't be runnin back and forth, I reckon I will be more than safe just standing still.

Have you ever thought of - oh, I don't know... TAKING IT EASY ON YOUR FEET FOR AWHILE???? It's one thing to not let pain get to you (believe me, I know this as I have a pain tolerance that borders on the freakish, even for a woman) but one thing I've discovered is if you ignore an injury, it will bite you in the ass at the most inconvenient time.

Geez - I am SO tired right now. I crewed on the schooner Aldebaran for the Great Schooner Race of San Francisco. It was the first race for both me and Aldebaran. In fact, only two of the crew had ever raced before.

Since Aldebaran was the second largest schooner, we had a thirty-minute handicap (meaning we started thirty minutes after the first racers.) Unlike previous sails, each of the crewmembers were in charge of one sail (some worked in teams as certain sails - like the jibs - required more than one person to work them.) I was in charge of the Fore Stays'l, although I helped hauling up other sails preparatory to sailing.

SideView.jpg

During the race, we got to one point where it made sense to swap out the Fors'l for the Fisherman sail. We accomplished this in a surprisingly short amount of time.

93feb.jpg

We finished in the middle of our schooner category, although we did overtake some of the other boats. A couple of them made some really odd tacking choices and although their boats were lighter and faster than ours, they still finished far behind.

Then we were directed to the docks at the San Francisco Yacht Club (which is actually in Sausalito, to the north of San Francisco.) No one told us where we were to dock until we were about halfway into the marina. A group of people were waving us over to their dock and we cut the engines and got our docklines ready. As we were in the process of docking, the guy I guess was in charge said, "You're supposed to be on dock 100, not this one." I asked him if that was the case, why did he and his colleagues wave us over to this dock? He thought about it and then made a wise decision: he shut up. Captain Hayden explained that since maneuvering a 72-foot 66,000 pound displacement schooner in a tight space was not the easiest thing to do, he was going to leave it right where it was. We finished the docking and then relaxed for a bit.

Folks stopped by and wanted to look at Aldebaran. Hayden gave brief tours and the rest of us wondered if they were providing anything in the way of refreshments for us. As in was there any benefit to us being there whatsoever or were we supposed to amuse and entertain the Yacht Club members after a long and tiring sail (none of us were told we were even going there - we thought we'd get to go home after the race.) We sent out a scouting party and they came back with the news of refreshments, so we ventured out onto the dock and up to the club area, where they were serving hors d'oeuvres and beverages. We hung out for awhile and then arranged to be driven back to our cars in Richmond Point, since Aldebaran was staying at the dock that evening.

I feel really beat up right now but had a great time racing. We acquitted ourselves pretty well, considering.
