  1. On that note. I doubt its wurth the effort unless you are looking for a good project.
  2. Yea it would be nice to have a pyracy.com banner flying somewhere with a little sign in sheet so we know who is who. I often have guys come up to me at shows and start talking to me like they know me and I am clueless. Then half way into the convo I figure out who it is that I am talking to. I would hate to miss out greeting a fellow pubber. I will be at my booth most of the day on sat but make sure you all check in at the Pirates Mag booth. I would like to set up a photo time to get a pub group shot at the event. Once the schedule is official maybe we can find a 5 min window to sneak in such a shot.
  3. Before touching it at all I would try to identify what time period its from. If its old then sometimes you just want to oil it and leave it be. sanding into it can alter the value. Dont forget some of these pirates here go to far lengths to get an aged look.
  4. Here in another link the other one doesn't seem to work anymore. http://www.mtv.com/videos/misc/343909/next...html#id=1604873
  5. Yesterday after reading this I checked my copy of Swords and Blades of the American Revolution. They have 3 Mortuary Swords listed on pages 145 and 146. The wights are listed as 2 lbs, 2.1 lbs, 2.3 lbs and later version coming in under 2 lbs at 1.9 lbs. The blades mounted in them are fullered and some are double and tripple fullered. They are similar to an early rapier blade more like an arming blade. Verry thin. However I have held in my hands an original from about 1640 that was mounted with a wide broad sword blade. I have also seen examples of these swords that have been remounted several times.
  6. Hey fellas. I can't make the meeting tonight. Drop me a message or email to catch me up afterwards if you will. 1stmate@baltimoreknife.com cheers!
  7. MTV's new show "How's Your News" will be airing their New Orleans episode this Suday at 10:30 est. They go to Pyrate Con and interview quite a few of us. Our own Talderoy is on the comercial for the episode. Should be fun. Here is the link to the preview. http://www.mtv.com/videos/misc/343909/next...html#id=1604873 Not sure how much time they will spend on Pirates but I thought it was wurth mentioning.
  8. As you shoudl be. Armour Class' version is right on the money. I have been a fan of their work for some time now.
  9. I did a special version of this for our good friend Kluas. It has lil bronze skulls on the end of each curl. Kinda neat. I will dig up a picture.
  10. She is actually a member of the Pirates of Emerson. You nailed it. Zombie/undead pirates. Nothing to do with steam punk just happened that she was in a picture with our Jose! STEAMPUNK! So excited!
  11. Of course! Weather or not you all feel this way I feel like this is my pyratical home and I concider the pub here as home base. I would like to feature as many members in the issue as I can. I think we will have some of our west coast Press Gang at the SanFran event. It would be great to have 2 angles on the event. Def keep us posted.
  12. Sure. The part that is refered to as the Long John Silver is the guard. Here is the LJS on a slightly curved blade with a narrow fuller up the spine. That what you meant?
  13. Hey Matt, Was at BARF last weekend in Tampa and there was some pretty cool cutlasses at Starfire forge. They seemed to be a bit ornate compared to the rest of the wares that they had. I saw one that they called the Long John Silver style that was pretty cool. Another had a skull as a counter balance and an open had guard. Yup those were mine. The starfire dealer down there sells both starfire and my stuff (BKS). Its easy to tell, but incase you have trouble just look for the BKS stamp on the blade.
  14. There are also a few of my designs now available on the Pirates Magazine webstore. https://www.piratesmagazine.com/miva/merchant.mvc?
  15. It seems that stage combat is growing quickly in the pirate re-enactor community. Makes me happy. I have gotten several emails from pirate groups that want to step up and try their hands at some steel on steel. I have done my best to stock them with quality pieces but if I am out of their price range there are a few decent blades that I can point them to. The first choice that you have to make is steel or aluminium. Alum was growing fast in popularity about 4 years ago but steel has made a come back the last year or so. Of course I prefer steel but remember never ever mix the two on stage. Steel vs Alum cuases breaks and that is never good with a crowd around.
  16. Anyone get a chance to stop by any of the sword booths? I think I have 3 guys doing that show that all carry my work. I have sent some pretty crazy items down to FL this year. I heard that at the ft.L show a pair of custom cutlasses with a "twist" theme sold last weekend. Curious if I know the new owner.
  17. Oh I 100% agree with you on the photos. I was just giving an example of some fun that our crew was already having. We will be arranging several photoshoots along the way. One will be on on an old ship(maybe the one used in Stardust) and add in a background that makes it look like an air ship. We are trying to get all parts of the world to be apart of this. We have recieved a few emails from some chaps over seas that are doing some wild steam punk tech. Flying machines and steam powered wagons. Just a few ideas so far. We would love to see what you do. Might even be something we can do a chapter/section on. Give me a few days. I will set up a Steampunk@piratesmagazine.com address for submissions.
  18. For about a year now, we have fluttered with the idea of doing a special edition of Pirates Magazine all on steam punk. It started as a brainstorming idea with Charles Vess(the artist behind stardust) during Faerie Con 2007. The idea evolved several times and we decided not to do it as an issue of the magazine but as a bonus that would be more of a book. We are still in the early stages of this, but it is going to happen. We feel Steam Punk is growing in popularity and the extent that people go to put together there personalities is out of this world and worthy of attention. If you want to get onboard with us, now is the time. We want the best of the best and are willing to take as much time to put together something special as it takes. We are working with some of the worlds top artists with this project and are excited at what has been put together so soon. I would like to open this post up as a brainstorming for this. What you all would like to see, ideas and anything you have to offer. Also we will be offer advertising for this is a classy way. So what do you think?
  19. Naw.... It's just that I work in a better place to know these things from time to time. Well it is still special that you share your info with us. A true asset to the community.
  20. I guess you would have to hold this one to get the surgical feel. It's quite the cleaver.
  21. Some time ago, I was approached to make a ship's surgeon knife with this similar design. I never made that knife and I dont even remember who the customer was. The spirit of that design lives on in this knife. This is a simple forged knife that is left almost 1/2" on the spine. The tip is quite thin allowing for precise cuts and the middle of the blade is almost a wedge alowing for easy limb removal. Here you can see the overall integral design. Here you can see the damascus pattern. Here is a picture in hand with a shot of the spine at the bottem. Here you can see the point. Nothing fancy. I thought I would share this with you all. It would serve as a nice knife to anyone not just a surgeon. I made this for my father for Xmas.
  22. Ahhhh I say start with your steel. That way if you someone gives you crap you can always make them go away. YARRRRRR!
  23. Thanks for the update Bess. Your the best.
