Cheers to ya mate We have a lot of Russian immigrants in the NYC area as of late, and somethings don't translate well here culturally. I am almost certain this is a 'Borat' kind of incident, perhaps with a little more spice than usual. I also have the honor, (or misfortune in my opinion) of being selected for jury duty next month in northern NJ, not far from NY...and I do own a couple of swords & cutlasses. I don't think my county would appreciate someone in pirate garb and 30 inch sharp weapons. And knowing my luck, I would be presiding over a case involving one of the 5 New York mafia families.

  6. Very funny. ....I only say that because I remember,as a teenager, hearing that smoking the peels can get you high. I had atttemted to dry them out on the roof. Hmm, such a remarkably cheap concept didn't seem like such a bad idea at the time. And when you're 15, who's to tell you otherwise.

  8. Well, I'm at home friday night nursing a 24 hour flu, and I happened to grab me 2 of my beloved hometown books off the living room shelf. I would reccomend anyone looking for historical photos to get the Images of America books from Arcadia Publishing, they do towns all over the US. If you're looking for Whaling, fishing, etc. , the books about New Bedford & Nantucket are available. And Coastie, I like your page icon of the HMS Bounty, my book's got one o'those too!....hmm , maybe not the same ship,but they look close. And going back to the subject, Sailors from the late 18th century typically wore pea coats, which my sources tell me were introduced about 1850-1860ish (though I'm not sure about the exact cut). Here's a 1920 photo of the US Volunteer Life Savings Corps at the Church St pier (which is now the US Coast Guard Station) in their fife & drum band. That's my great-grandfather on the second upper left, as well as other relatives in the photo) . Their pea coats are pretty much identical to the one I wear now, which is a 1970's navy issue made of kersey wool. (100 times better than anything made nowadays) New Bedford, Massachusetts was the premier whaling town back in the day, and my town was about 2 towns across the way down the coastline (Fall River + Mount Hope Bay = Bristol, R.I.). Herreshoff was the big shipbuilder in town, here's a photo of their workers circa 1900: And a few feet down the street was the US Rubber company, here's a classic New England 1880 photo of some workers, a few years before they started hiring cheap labor from french-speaking canada (like my family):

Hmm, I have already begun conceptualizing something that I plan on using for parades, halloween and PIP. **Prop source alert** Occasionally I walk by the most amazing (& freakiest) store in lower Manhattan called Evoution, they specialize in skeletons (human & animal) & weird bugs & weird rocks. I imagine one can find a mail-order human skull, the one in this store retail for about $90 and up.

  11. Ransom, I second that. No one feels as bad as I do, as I was in the area just 36 hours ago. ...and I planned to attend! I saw it all go down in KW last year, and discovered that my wool costume was not appropriate for tropical climes. This year I planned to convert to all linen, but the car needed new axles, brakes, and some other major repairs , and my job commitments also cut me short. All about time & money. ( I just want to say F work!) To make matters worse, I even tried to catch the "green flash" on Englewood Beach in SW Florida but to no avail....however nice sunset just the same: The only thing 'piratey' I saw was a parade float full of pirates in Venice, Fl. for the T-Day weekend parade on Saturday night...any of you crew out there on it? Just curious. To make matters worse, while lounging about the house, I heard voices saying something about car insurance.

  16. Lets take a look at the numbers and determine what the likeliness of relation to any of the famous GAOP pirates. Without even getting dicussion whether pirates had offspring, though you can be certain they had siblings and cousins. I tried to round off the generations to 25 years respectively from someone born in 1970 down to 1690, with a birth every 25 years. The person born in 1970 has 4096 great-grandparents (10X). That would be great great great great great great great great great great great great grandparents....thus the 10X. This does not include whether any parents had offspring at age 14. Without getting into any discussion of ethnicity, the population of the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, and NI) in 1690 was nearly 5 million. Sorry if I didn't include Ireland. The population of the Americal colonies (of the 13) ,and not including the Caribbean (Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, etc) was 210,000. 4096 possibilities of someone born in 1690...give or take a dozen.
