  1. That's a 48 mile row for John Smith I can recall taking 6 hours in a cabin cruiser from Point Lookout in Md. to Tangier, (which I think was like 60 miles or so). The island itself is a bit close to sea level, and in some case, below sea level, which I recall houses on stilts. I can recall getting nearly strafed by A-10 bombers on the way home because we veered into a restricted target area. What's really remarkable about Tangier island is the residents distinctive unadulterated Cornwallish accent. These are Americans, mind you!
  2. William is right. White Horse Tavern...supposedly the oldest tavern in America, owned by a pirate, no less.
  3. heh, A Ford guy. I'm in the same boat myself. I'm trying to sell my '57, it's part Thunderbird in the sense it has a Thunderbird 312 block in it.
  4. When i was a wee lad, my dad had a white 1969 beetle. I decided to ruin it for him by, having seen Herbie the Love Bug, and vicariously attepting to win a raffle of a gas-powered go-kart of the said beetle and being heartbroken when I lost the raffle, I fabricated the number 53, and some racing stripes on paper with magic marker, and scotch-taped the paper all over my dad's car. The voids of paint left by my dad removing the scotch tape made him never forgive me. ...the things disney movies do to 9 year old kids.
  5. and what I didn't know....she played a dual role in POTC :DMC
  6. In the meantime, I'm dropping by down to Philly to see the exhibit...if I can find an excuse (...and the gas money) to do the 2 hr drive. I'm hoping the museum store will have some dvd's of the NG channel's Whydah
  7. Coastie writes: ...my rockabilly band used to play El & Gee's pub in New London a few years ago. As far as names, there is but only one Black Pearl and it has nothing to do with Disney. Newport.,R.I.
  8. Dang! I only caught the last 20 minuted of the program last night on the National Geographic channel...couldn't help it, I was in-between watching the clinching Stanley Cup final....those penguins. Is this an old telecast?
  9. One of my favorite names is the Slaughtered Lamb in Greenwich Village, NYC, a nice medieval archaic name. Though kind of reminds me of the Warren Zevon song Werewolves of London..."little-old-lady-got-mu-ti-lat-ed-late-last-night".
  10. Lady Alyx wrote ...including your own shoes. That's what the tour guide on the Mayflower told us 4th graders, about the pilgrim's voyage from the Netherlands/Southampton to Cape Cod. Hmm. I guess shoe leather doesn't sound so bad when you're hungry. ...at least it's edible.
  11. I was watching 3:10 to Yuma last night, and I heard that word uttered.
  12. I'm driving on I-95N in Providence, R.I, and to the right of me I see this. The Continental Sloop Providence resting on boat stands in Conley's Wharf...so I had to get a closer look. This is a revolutionary war era vessel (in this case, a replica) but it bears an uncanny resemblance to this picture in one of my pirate books. Not much seems to have changed, however anyone if you have some info, please do tell.
  13. Finally!....Lucky me, I was able to aquire a couple of bottles of Thomas Tew rum. The retail seems to be exclusively only in Rhode Island, probably because of limited production capacity. I had no problem finding this in Bristol, not far from Newport. The marketing concept and packaging is pretty cool. You can get the story here ....Haven't opened them yet so I can't tell you what it tastes like yet. Just to get you in the spirit with this spirit, I shot these pics on the shores of Narragansett bay: This was at low tide. In the puddles between the rocks were these small hermit crabs. perfect snacks for Bootstrap Bill while he's hiding in the ship's hold of the Black Pearl. Though a few years back I remember them being the size of a 25¢ gumballs, but thse were only the size of 10¢ gumballs
  14. I might pass through there this memorial day weekend, I'm headed to rhode island. Hopefully sunday weather will be cooperative.
  15. God help me, I'm so nervous. 50% chance I switch jobs and move to Baltimore & work smack in the inner harbor before summers end.
  16. the mustache guy on the left strikes me as a sex offender
  17. I aquired a cutlass, didn't want to spend much money for a period accurate one, so I'm modifying and polishing this one. The hilt is brass, as you can see below. Anyone know where I can get the blackening?
  18. Thank you michaelsbagley....I corrected some of that I mistakenly grabbed off what looked like the imperial metric table Wine casks from the chart below.
  19. Cask sizes: gallon = 1 gallon (obvious, right?)/3.8 litres rundlet =18 gallons/68¼ litres barrel = 31 gallons/119¼ litres tierce =42 gallons/160 litres hogshead = 63 gallons/238½ litres...is this what John Lennon wrote about in Benefit for Mr. Kite? puncheon = 84 gallons/318 litres pipe= 120 gallons/477 litres...sometimes called a 'butt' tun = 252 gallons/954 litres
  20. Two of those three hours is spent on the 20 mile stretch between Stamford and New Haven. It's been that way for 20 years. Sadly, though, I was a college student at University of Bridgeport o so long ago, and I used to wander beyond the edge of the campus, and there was the HMS Rose in all it's glory . . Now I understand it is in California or Washington these days. Thanks for the links, tho.
  21. From Capt. Sterling Ooh...I must get that one. I remember Charles County & countless fields of tobacco all the way to Newberg& Cobb Island MD(directly across from GW's Mout Vernon) back in the 70's . Now it's all strip malls, Walmarts and McMansions.
  22. "Engleesh whaleur.....stop now.... or we weel destroy you" as heard from a disctance from the deck of the SYREN (er ,HMS SUPRISE)
  23. 9 OUT OF 12.......I got a C+!!! I'm gonna be president!
  24. bbcdutchman, you just gave me an idea.....what about something similar to crab pots? I wouldn't expect 17th/18th century people to construct a 3' by 3' by 3' trap out of chicken wire, but something of wood seems feasible. ...tho you'd have to tend to them or people would steal your catch.
