The sea bag in Hervey Garrett Smith's books
Black Hearted Pearl replied to roytheodd's topic in Thieves Market
I don' know if any of you will be interested in this, but at your local grocery store in the laundry section you can find a 100% raw cotton 'laundry' bag that closes with cotton rope. The stops on the bag are not period, but the rest 'passes in a pinch'. I just broke off the plastic stops. To me, the sea bag is seems just a repurposed sail bag. When my nylon sail bag for my pop bottle sails wore out, I replaced it with the nylon version of the 'laundry' bag. It's working great. -
Free class in June, you say? How long does the class last? Like I said, I can still do the 40 hours if I can make it a long weekend. Alas, I have heard of sailors here on the west coast going back east to take classes. Just taking the class would be worth the money and effort.
-
Ah, but I will only whisper it in yer ear, sos you'll have to wait until we meet in person to hear.

Silkie, The problem is here on the west coast is there is no formal classes. They train volunteers over a series of weeks. I don't live near the coast. I live in Arizona, so I would need a definitive compact class schedule in order to complete the program. I could volunteer the 40 hours a month by putting in a long weekend, but I can't be there for several weeks in a row to do the training. I would even be willing to pay to take a two week class. (Pretty desperate, huh?)

Happy Birthday, Ransom. Ya couldn't share the date with a 'nicer' pirate, says BHP as she runs away really fast from Red-handed Jill.

Happy Birthday. No better way to spend yer birthday than wafted in black powder, I says.

It all sounds wonderful to me. I wish there was a program like the KN's here on the west coast.

Since you're planning on attending, come say 'ahoy' to me at the Port Royal Privateers. Stay for the anniversary battle of the Spanish American war; I'll be heading the cannon crew up on the hill.

Lady Alyx, Brethern of the Coast will NOT be at Old Fort MacArthur Days and paying public is requested to NOT come in garb. There will be two pirate guilds there this year. Port Royal Privateers and Rogue Privateers. Again, I repeat, this is NOT an event for people to attend in garb. However, it is an awesome opportunity to attend a timeline event and there are some great presentations of military throughout the ages. One of my favorites, besides Port Royal Privateers, is SULIGOWSKI'S REGIMENT. http://www.husaria.us/home

Mutiny, ye say? For what reasons would ye want to mutiny? Are you doing so because you want to be named Captain? By all means then, sir, try yer hand at mutiny. For I am only a simple able-bodied seaman and will perform me duties for whomever the crew elects. Yer more than welcome to assume all the duties, headaches, politics, dealing with hackers that come with the running of this ship.

I already made plans to sail to Avalon aboard the Spirit of Dana Point that Friday. If'n I have the stamina, ye may all see me on Sunday.

Well, thank ye, mate. If we're ever in the same port, I'll buy ya a drink. And as many seamen will tell ya, I'm no lady. They call me captain.
-
Happy Natal, ye scallywag. I'll be thinkin's of you whilst I be sailing the bay.

Before the 19th century, red ferrous oxide paint would have been used to preserve wood from mold and other organisms. Also known as 'red lead'.
-
It looks like I won't be able to attend afterall, but I've sent some treasures to be auctioned for the likes of you pirates. You'll have to attend to see what goodies there be, but ye knows I'm a particular pirate so me treasure be worth having.

Heading for New Orleans and Pyrate Con
Black Hearted Pearl replied to Rumba Rue's topic in Scuttlebutt
Well, I have to hang them somewhere until you get back to keelhaul them. -
Aye, I'll raise a glass to you as well, Sailor.

Dear friends, I am in need of your expertise and opinions. I have 3 weeks to get ready for an event where I will (hopefully) portray someone from the 19th century Royal Navy. What I am in assistance of, mainly due to cash flow, is how to convert a men's suit jacket of Navy blue into a short jacket like this picture posted below. Any assistance provided is greatly appreciated.

The Crew of The Scavenger photoshoot
Black Hearted Pearl replied to Capt_Jack_Stifler's topic in Scuttlebutt
Nay, those feathers were given freely as gifts from the birds to Rumba. She is a sweet soul that wouldn't harm a creature. Now, I'm not saying she wouldn't run another pirate/brit/french/spanish/etc. threw, just not an innocent animal. -
Lass, yer an inspiration to me. I look forward to following yer adventures and someday, walkin in yer shoes.

Pirates seize french yacht
Black Hearted Pearl replied to Black Hearted Pearl's topic in Captain Twill
You know this makes it difficult for us re-enactors. The San Diego Maritime Museum is eliminating their pirate exhibit because one of their Captains had a friend killed by modern day pirates. Unfortunately, we probably will never know the pirates' of Somalia side of the story as there is always two sides to a conflict.
