Is mere stupidity better than sheer stupidity?

Close. Fort Frederick. Actually, this took place during another (reenacting) life. I was in the Royal Artillery. The event was a POW Weekend at Fort Frederick, Maryland, which housed POWs during the RevWar. The event was one of the best RevWar events I participated in, as it turned out to be something akin to Hogan's Heroes, albeit with the Brits in the roll of Hogan & co, and the Americans as the bungling jailers.

No, can't say I have. But when I was a POW in an American prison camp our sergeant had us polish our brass belt fittings with ashes mixed with water.

If you ever do, take some pics and send 'em his way. He'd get a kick out of it and I'm sure he'd post them on his site. One of my friends once photoshopped a picture of an Ogre (the giant cybernetic tank from the classic game of the same name) into a picture of the famous Las Vegas sign. We sent it to Evil Stevie and sure 'nuf, next thing you know it's on their front page.

Agreed. I've done various experiments - pistols tucked in belts, sashes, on belt hooks, on ribbands, on ribbands and tucked into sashes, etc - and I've come to the conclusion that... pirates armed with pistols never ran! They sauntered. There probably is some truth to this. What's the greatest distance one has to travel when crossing a deck...

garb- full on reenactor? Or Hollywood type?

If you want us to nitpick them, start a tread in Capn Twill... -
What's that old adage about the happy person is the one who makes a profession of their hobby...???

Omg! There's a place not too far down the street from me that has some of the best crab cakes! It's like $20 for two huge crab cakes. Each one a meal in it's own right. And it's all crab. Ok... now I'm hungry.

Right. And honestly, when we're out there, I'm not going to be looking at your shoes anyway... Or, to put it in a way Kass once put it... "when we are out there, I'm not going to be critiquing your stuff because I'm spending my time critiquing my own stuff."

Look here for the bit about meeting there instead of at Chowan. Scroll up two pages to page 514 for the bit about the 1706 act.

Except for WWII, I have found shoes have always been one of the hardest bits of kit to get right. Without spending lots and lots of money.
-
Slightly better would be Loyalists shoes, assuming they've gotten the bugs worked out. Imho.

Since you are choosing between two evils, you might as well go for the less expensive evil.

Thank the gods Montgomery County Maryland chose to run the liquor stores themselves when prohibition ended. I can walk to the county store during lunch and pick up a bottle for $9!!! (where's the old gun shootin' smilie we used to have when ya need it...)

I'm a devoted Blackstrapper too... so much so that I don't need to try other rums... Capn Bob... does your local liquor store sell miniatures? You know, the teeny little bottles behind the counter? I doubt there would be great selection, but it would give you a place to start. Then again... how can you know if you really like a rum without downing the whole bottle? The only good solution to your dilemma is to go to an event, and sample other pirates' rums.

I have a copy of Heart of Oak. It's Napoleonic, but with some minor conversions you could do Marlburian. It is supposed to be one of the best. But I can't vouch for it, having never actually played it. I have played Wooden Ships and Iron Men as a Marlburian era game. But... that's not miniatures. Though you could convert it to miniatures. Or just use them in place of the counters. I think there is one called Blackbeard (not to be confused with the Avalon Hill game of the same name), or something like that. It came out about five or six years ago? I don't know much about it, other than some people liked it and some didn't. I forget the exact complaints by those who didn't like it. I'd probably go with Heart of Oak and do a conversion. From what I have seen, it is quite detailed.

Oh sorry.. The linen caps... You'd think it would be easy to find a freebie online... I did find simple instructions...

Being partially colorblind I often wonder if these sorts of tests really work for me. Considering my results, I'd say yes. I guess my percpetion of the actual colors is close enough.

found stuff regarding founding of the town... nothing substantial... nothing relating to pirates. "1706, Jan. 21-? Trott in his Laws of British colonies in America rel to church, etc., 1736, N.C. section, prints a fragment of an act with the caption 'Part of an Act, Intituled, An Act for a Town in Little River. At an Assembly begun January 21st, 1705/6." "On Sept. 13, 1715, the council records show the following... Ordered that a proclamacon be Issued out for ye Assemblys meeting at Captn Richard Sanderson in Little River instead of the church in Chowan which was the place of ye last meeting."

I love this guy!

Who can say for sure... I think this is one of those times when I'd apply Occam's Razor... entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem. Or to put it in plain English, in this case, they did what they said they were going to do.

Happy Birthday to you Michael! Have a great day!

Cool. I know what I'll be searching for when I get home.

I've always wanted to try those. But I couldn't get the first in hardback, and the paperback had a really stupid cover with a cutout in it... yeah, I know, it seems like an odd reason to not read a book... but with all the books available to read, one must pick and choose. Currently, I'm "reading" Mongoose Publishing's version of the classic Scifi rpg Traveller. They did an amazing job of improving upon one of the best rpgs ever made. As I read it I can't help but think how great it would be to turn into a historical piracy rpg. And... I've been thinking about either rereading the scifi classic The Mote in God's Eye, or possibly reading a scifi classic I haven't read, such as Stranger in a Strange Land, or Forever War, etc.

Eeergh... not in California... The federal gov't has a bunch of legislation on that. Hell, just look at what the anthropologists had to go through to get a look at Kennewick Man. As a bystander, to me it seems to have swung to far the other way. And I'm part native american!
