Petee! Always good to have you traipsin' about! And congrats on the family and home ownership! They'll keep you busy, but there's nothing like having a family and a humble abode!

Or 17th century shoes will get you there too. Sarah Juniper's site seems to be down at the moment, but if you are going to buy some shoes, she makes amazing stuff. www.sarahjuniper.co.uk/17c.html

I tried that with mine. Didn't work. I'm going to have to dig them out of the RV to see if they are still stenchy after... what... three or four years now?

... and the guys getting ready to board the enemy ship.

Duchess, you may be interested in this, while not quite Ottoman Empire, my friends who are putting on this event do a Janissary impression sometimes. http://www.kismeta.com/diGrasse/konotop_1659.htm I was going to do this event until, but moved it from a weekend that worked for me to one that didn't.

AND WHATS WRONG WITH DRESSING LIKE A KLINGON ?..... At least we didn't run around wearin' silly Feddi pajamas..... Heh heh heh... saw that coming...

Might you be able to replace them with slightly larger diameter wooden dowels? A non-historically accurate way might be to wrap one layer of duct tape around the very end of the rammer. You might even be able to find duct tape in a color that matches.

I've used both Elephant and Goex. They seem to function equally well. Goex is the readily available choice around here. At $20+ a can, I had been thinking about buying it by the case. How many cans in a case? You have to have a proper storage safe if you keep... 24 pounds?

Nice. You make a good GI.

Saw you mentioning being a navy brat, and the more I thought about it the more I thought of my childhood best friend and his dad. I probably started going to airshows (not sure when the first Armed Forces day was) in the late 70s. My best friend's dad was in the navy reserves (on a P-3 Orion subhunter) so he would take us to Andrews and PAX (Patuxent River Naval Air Station) to see the sights. Saw a bunch of cool planes in those days. Got to walk through a B-17! What fun!

Just wore it... as in everyday attire?!?! I think you have some 'splainin to do? Either way, you are my kind of geek.

Germany didn't exist as a nation until... I think it was 1871.

In the 1980s and early 90s I used to visit Andrews AFB practically every Armed Forces Day. I hadn't thought about it in awhile, but as I was driving home from Norfolk the other day, I happened to be passing by the base when the Thunderbirds were practicing. Good stuff! Last Armed Forces Day I attended was... geez... sometime in the early 90s. My RevWar group attended a battle demo at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. That was a fun event. We had a pretty sizeable battle, considering it wasn't an actual reenactment. That's also the event where I discovered a Brown Bess will still function with a broken main spring.

Getting dirty or how not look brand new
blackjohn replied to Littleneckhalfshell's topic in Captain Twill
I actually like a bit of variety in the impression. Everyone too clean would be wrong, that's fairly certain. Since the topic of this thread is dirt and grunge, and as you point out pirates throwing wine on each other is documented, wine stains would be appropriate. -

eh... I keep thinking of Snelgrave... and the fact that the pirates continually stole his clothes until he was down to what, just one shirt as I recall. You guys can reenact the poor unsuccessful bastards who didn't steal new duds if you want, but not me. -
My pleasure.

Can't say that I know them, but anyone who lives down in the Tidewater should consider themselves lucky. I sometimes daydream about retiring down there. Either that, or more likely Saint Mary's. And hey, if anyone is interested, I've made the powerpoint available at: http://www.piratebrethren.com/articles/UCH...onf%20Color.ppt Though I suspect without my narration it won't make a great deal of sense.

Two scans of miquelets from TRS. http://www.piratebrethren.com/weapons/scan0001.jpg http://www.piratebrethren.com/weapons/scan0002.jpg The #505 lock I don't believe I can get a good scan of. It's pretty close to the binding, and I'd probably not be able to get all of it in, and it's a rather small pic anyway, so... I hope these are helpful.

Heh... I know I have one around here somewhere... even better, I have one of the missus in the red classic Trek miniskirt! Yum.

Yesterday I realized I hadn't been to Williamsburg since son #1 was born. So when I stopped there on my way home, walking around town reminded me how much I really love the 18thC.

Just finished cleaning house... cuz tonight is game night!

So if you don't care, why did you bother to ask? Why even bother to have, or pretend to have, standards? I think there is where the "What is actually authentic?" crosses into the provenance of what historic comprimises are re-enactors able/willing to make for the sake of safety, health, and to a greater degree convenience. It's certainly a huge sliding scale. Hell, it even varies within groups. HELL, for that matter it might vary in the same person, depending upon event expectations. Would you feel even the least bit... inappropriate... for displaying said plastic cup? (Btw, I'm not saying I haven't done the same, I just trying to examine a mindset.)
