Oh, dear God! I'll have to ask my Professor about that about Honest Abe talkin' Pirate.

It's a different Abe. The one who does Minooka is Max (I forget his last name), and the one who does Greenbush is Fritz (again... no last name).

The photo is of another Abe altogether.

Shame...For Shame, Cap'n Pete! Guinness is to kept only slightly chilled or better yet...room tempature. Never cold!

When I was last in London, in all the English pubs, you could order either Guinness, or "Extra Chilled" Guinness, which was apparently kept that way to satisfy the taste of the American tourists.

Our first round was an experimental round of bitters (noncarbonated and barely room temperature)... after that, it was "Extra Chilled" Guinness the whole time. I'll try the local custom at least once, but if I don't fall in love with it, it's back to what I like (actually, it was my earlier stay in Scotland when I first became hooked on Guiness!).

And one last note... The cans of Guinness Stout in my refrigerator all are clearly labeled: "SERVE EXTRA COLD". Who am I to argue?

How long ago and where in Scotland did you stay, Cap'n Pete? It's been over 20 years since I've been. Always looking forward to going back one day..first to Glasgow then to Coatbridge and Dundee to see my kith and kin!

Hey, if memory serves me right...there were a lot of Irish in Scotland in the late 80s. My have been because of the job situation at the time.

And Sterling... did you want colored toothpicks? the plastic ones? or the awesome colored platic sword ones?

Although swords, I don't think the style is period correct for the GAoP! ;)B);)

Actually, I'm THE sick bastard...

On a more serious note (and to draw attention away from my sense of humour), the Romans cropped up a lot of places other than Palestine! Here there's quite a stong movement of Roman reenactors doing events with iron age Britons. It's also perhaps less controversial and easier to do accurately than Biblical reenactment.

Well out in the Bible belt of the USA, I guess Passion Plays keep them occupied and allow them to play when not doing the usual event... certainly not controversial in this country and the script is right there, a breeze to follow... B)

Really? I'd have thought the "Bible v. Historical Accuracy" debates would be endless B)

Certainly not something I'd want to get into (and you all know how much I love a good debate!)

Hmmm in the last few years, scientists are showing that the bible is actually one of the most scientifically correct books, mathematically the numbers in it turn out to be one of the most perfect math equations, the bible code, just coming to late is down right scary with its historically accuracy but that is still fairly new... if you ever wish debate the book, I think I would truly find it quite a bit of fun.... ;)

B) I'd be delighted to, but perhaps this isn't the right place.

Staying semi-on topic though, scientifically accurate isn't the same thing as historically accurate, so it would still be an issue for historically-minded Roman reenactors. It would in this country anyway.

I certainly agree this is not the place for it, perhaps at RF2... and scientifically accurate of course is not historcially, it is that as well... so perhaps if we have the time.... ;)

Well, you'll all have the opportunity to ask them yourselves come RF2. I am sure that they will enlighten you all on the topic at hand.

Who would better understand the question at hand then the Roman Sentries themselves.

All seriousness aside, they are a ton of laughs!

I suspect that it may be impossible to objectively debate historical accuracy with a creationist I'm afraid. I like a good objective debate, but this could never be.

Ah so you are under the impression that just because one might believe they cannot be objective? Sounds somewhat narrow minded to me....

Given that the creation is probably the biggest debate about the Bible, and the one with the hugest mass of conflicting evidence, I suspect that anyone who seriously believes in the story of creation as told in the Bible will be unable to even consider the possibility that anything else is not historically accurate. Unless you are prepared to entertain the possibility that the Bible might not be 100% accurate history then no debate could be objective.

If that makes me narrow minded then so be it, but it doesn't.

I have been told and I have read that history is interpereted by the writer of said history. And those who write history are prone to scewing the history in the direction of thier beliefs and social status. It depends on which side you are on and who is doing the writing that determines what is true or which truth is believed. History will always be a debate on any subject, even the bibles truth. And since we do not have any book other than the bible on the creation debate, we can only speculate what is truth and what is not.

It will be an interesting thing to discuss at any rate. Just my two pence.

Oi, Gentlemen, if ye decide ta debate, please let me know so I can be sure ta leave tha room aye.

Say, when can we expect the schedule to be up on the RF site? I'd like to be able to plan a bit so I won't miss anything good.

I wouldn't be debating, if I wasn't prepared to entertain such a notion...If I was of the opinion that I was infaliable on said subject, then I would also believe you were completely wrong to begin with. If that were the case, why would I waste my breath debating with someone I already believed to be wrong? I debate to learn more, not to try and prove someone else may be wrong.
