Top 10 items for your pirate kit
Patrick Hand replied to Gentleman of Fortune's topic in Thieves Market
I'd start with learning how to sew....... then you can make all of you own stuff...... For someone starting out, I think they should start with ... A semi-period shirt (white or checked cotton .... ) Canvas slops scarf/ headrag (NOT A dew-rag......) something kinda sorta passable for shoes and a few acessorys I figure if they learn how to sew, they can make thier shirt and slops, and using cotton (or even an old bed sheet for the fabric for a shirt...) they don't have to worry about making mistakes on thier garb. It's also cheaper. So they have something to wear, then they can take some time to find out what kind of Pyrate they wanna be.... entertainer, Fun, semi-authentic or authentic..... Once they know what kind of Pyrate , then they can start adding other stuff..... better shoes, a hat, coat or jacket..... play or real weapons..... A linen shirt, and straight last shoes are great if you wanna be more authentic.... but some pyrates would have more fun with bucket top boots, and a flashy coat... someone just starting out, might not know what kinda pyrate they wanna be yet ...... By starting out simple, they can find the way that's right for them..... (Yah... I know it's not a top ten list....... sometimes I just don't follow instructions at all........ ) -
I use a Jas. Townsend hat blank that I re-blocked (see me avitar)....... I just want one with a larger brim....
-
I went to some "felt" pages and read how felt is made..... but it would be so much easier to find just the blank...... may have to go the "make it yourself bit" if I want a larger brim tho..........
-
hurricane, do you know when they will be updating the PiP page ? I can't make it for the whole time, but gotta figure out my schedule early so that I can make arangements to go again.........
-
On some (most) hat blanks, you gotta cut the edge off (it's where they nailed it down to form the brim.......) you can then (hand sew) ribbon over the edge to finish if off realy nicely......... I'm still looking for a very heavy felt blank that has a "huge" brim........I've seen some at Rendezvous that were "almost" fight, but so far no luck.......
-
Dang..... don't think I will be going.... couldn't get the info to my boss in time......... rats...... (of course the up side of this is I maybe be able to buy another gun...... so Ok... not so bad.....)
-
Gof..... wot sized charge did those things fire to .... fire the granade...?
-
See we were right after all........ dang... it is so hard to be humble..............
-
I still wanna re-make me cutlass..... wot I have right now is a cut down broad sword.... wanna make something better..............
-
Cire..... the image didn't post...... unless you want your flag to be a banner add for a service provider........ don't think it will post..... but maybe worth a try...............
-
I'm going to get in so much trouble for this...... Off the top of my head, I can think of a few "respectable" ladys that would have had contact with pyrates......... but the majority of women that had anything to do with Pyrates were..... aaaaaah...... well..... wenches and harlots......
-
This should probably go in Plunder or Capt. Twill...... or RabbleRousing under Pyrate projects...... but I'll post it here...... Right now the Buccaneer Project is sorta on "hold" (don't have the money to get the paddlebutt musket yet.....) I'm hopeing that a publisher will buy the "Baby Snot" story that I wrote and illistrated.... then I can buy a bunch guns (all black powder...) I've done some work on the rules for Pyrate Battles, and started working on the ships and figures.... sometimes I can get alot done, and other times..... just can't get modivated to work on it...... I'm thinking about making an insanely complex Pyrate Captain outfit.... I like the idea, but once again.... just can't get started on it..... And I haven't done any cartoons for fun in forever...... Hopefull it's just lingering Winter "blaaasssss" and with Spring finaly here I can get back to making stuff........

I'm going to the Carnaval Parade tomarrow in San Fransico, and going to use the hook, and wear the eyepatch that I made outta wet molded leather, and a cheap plated skull (cut holes through the leather, so I can kinda see through the eyepatch) "how did you loose youe eye.....?" "First day wit me hook........... " Also taking the Big pyrate flag..... gotta get some photos........
-
You can also use rubbing alcohol instead of water to wet mould leather..... My baldric has a holster sewn on it's front, but the leather is a realy thick water bufffelo hide (I traided some garb for a chunka conveyer belt) but I couldn't form the thick leather without moulding it..... so a friend sujested rubbing alcohol instead of water, and it worked better than I expected..... Also the leather was so thick, that I had to use a drill instead of a hole punch..... but the resulting baldrick is "bulletproof"

My Boss gave me this realy long scarry looking kitchen knife.... I wanna re-do the handle, then try a trick I read in a Track of the Wolf catalog.....to make a knife sheath.... cover the blade with a few layers of masking tape.... then cut-out the leather for the sheath (for me that part is easy.... for others it may be easier said than done.....) but then cover the inside of the leather with epoxy, and quickly sew it together befor the epoxy sets....... the tape is sopopse to keep the blade from sticking to the whole thing..... I think I will use some epoxy putty instead (it's not as "sticky") but it should make a hard shell for the sheath.... For my cutlass, I made an inner "core" outta aluminum flashing, and then sewed the leather over that..... it makes a "nice" rasping sound when I pull the cutlass out, but sometimes the core comes out also..... next one I'll rivet or glue the core inplace.......

I had too much to dream last night
Patrick Hand replied to Diego Santana de la Vega's topic in Beyond Pyracy
They were mostly there.... but the smoke did escape out from thier bodies (missing lungs and such) They looked like a nice couple, just zombies.... The details of the dream were increadable.... it was just like stuff you'd see in a movie....... -
The weather has been realy nice.....Winter finaly over...... Just gotta remember when it gets hot.... that I was waiting for warmer weather........ kinda funny how the weather works isn't it.......... But I'm in a funny kinda good mood..... so I think I will just "flow " with it........

I hadda wierd dream the other night.... This Mega Corporation was having a convention, but one of them decided to kill them all off by unleashing a majic/tec spell to unleash all the dead.... (very slasher film stuff...) but when the undead came to "life" they were not bad (some were a bit mad at how they died, and some that it wasn't the reserection that they expected) but then it all kinda worked out..... \But somehow I was stuck in an airport with all the living and zombies (the image of the zombie couple out in the rain smoking cigarettes was kinda funny) but then I started walking through the airport.... and a comotion at the bagage conveyer caught my attention...... I just "knew" something was wrong, and started to run..... dove for cover just as a domb exploded.....(splattering blood in the best Sam Peckenpaw tradition) thats when I woke up. and went outside for a smoke....... all the immages were like something you'd see inna movie....... close ups, long shots and the angles...... dang....... if I could figure out how to write it..... might have a good movie idea ........ -
Dang.... there is just something so "wierd" about that hand mortar........ don't know if I like it or not............... (useto fire a M-203 when I was in the Army.... so the "kick" might be "fun"inna wierdkindasorta way)....... don't know...... keep looking at th' thing and wondering.........................
-
I have made the "under the breast vest type of " bodices.....By mistake kinda sorts.... I made a more period one once (and they all work for what they were to "do")..... Depends on what style or look you are going for..... both look good (from a guys view...) I still say, that you should check out the bodice genarator that Gentelman of Fortune posted for more information.......
-

-
