Patrick Hand replied to callenish gunner's topic in Fort Taylor
Just hang out in th' tavern..... no one will even notice you...... OH..... maybe you wanted ter be noticed ? Just hang out in th' tavern.............. -
I think I've figured out a source for brass buttons...... Next time I get to the fabric store, I'm going to check the brass buttons. The white metal buttons that I have now, are cast in one piece, hopefull the brass one are the same, and not just pot metal that is brass plated.... I'll take a file with me, and see if I can remove the design that is cast on the front of the button. If it works, they will be almost the same as the ones fron the Spanish site...... OK... the shank won't be quite as large, but they should work.....

I would like to find more info about drawers. In an article in The Book of Buckskinning the author states that Mountain men did not wear underwear. and I've read about "dirty shirttails" (eeewh...) But in the Slops contracts, drawers are listed, and in Robinson Courso (sp) there was a reference to them.... I know during the American Civil War, they were worn, but I'm not sure about the Rev. War period..... I think NOT wearing them was more of an American frounter kind of thing.....

OK.... I know this isn't untill October...... we have plenty of time to figure everything out.......... I just wanna know...... who is corridinating this from the Pyrate point of view.... is this going to be a gathering of Pyrates at a Renn. Faire, or is this going to be a gathering of Pyrates that are part of the Renn. Fair? Are we camping and a part of this... or are we just the "invading" pyrates..... Sorry to be such a poop...... but I would like to see some more info on what we are planning on doing there....... -

See that's your first mistake....... you were suppose to be using the silver coins.... not the gold ones......

Is it just a coil of wire that fits over the pipe's bowl? I'm trying to figure out what a pipe cap would look like......
-
There was a thread about pipe caps..... but it was so long ago.... Anyway... where was the original from, what was it made out of? and is there a picture of it (or the one that you made)?

Please Help... Need Fast (and Good) Shirt Advice!
Patrick Hand replied to Mick MacAnselan's topic in Captain Twill
A shirt shown in Voyager's Sketchbook by James Hanson dated 1780-1800 from Landis Valley Museum, PA. shows a shirt with reenforcements at the shoulders. It's a patch that covers the shoulder seam where the sleeves are gathered into the body. In The Mountain Man's Sketch Book there is a shirt (1820-1860) where the back of the shirt goes over the shoulders, and is then gathered into the front of the shirt making a yoked shirt. The yoked shirt is too late for our time period. but the Voyager's shirt is the same style as eairlier shirts. The Voyagers shirt had a neck hole that is just a slit, with reenforcing gussets on both sides of the coller. The later period shirts, the neck hole is cut out and the coller gathered to that..... -
It was in realy poor taste...... but that is why we all clikked on it........

Due to no info about them here... I did a search.... http://www.lvrenfair.com/ Eeeergh... has anyone contacted them, or are we just kinda showing up at a Renn Faire in Vegas ? -
I found a web page about letter boxing... kind of the same thing as Geo caching.... but without the GPS..... Making the rubber stamps is the easy part.... but I never got around to hiding them..... I made four stamps outta a carved eraser that when put together would make a Pyrate flag.... maybe I'll get around to hiding them this year.......

OUCH,....... me eyes....... and I knew better than to look. One of Biker's post.. and the title warned me.... but like a bad car crash, you just gotta look........
-
I looked around on the internet... found an English Civil War page, that showed a pair of reproduction drawers..... I figured that drawers would have the same basic cut as mens breeches, but be slightly looser in the leg. This pair, goes to just above my knees, has a single button at the waistband, and a tie to adjust them. I'm not sure if they are correct, but it's the best guess that I can come up with at the time....... (Kinda funny posting a picture of underwear in Capt. Twill and not in Beyond Piracy... )
-
I finished making my 1706 slops contract jacket .... Made a pair of period drawers .... and knitted a monmouth cap... This was my second knitting project... the first monmouth cap came out with a lot of mistakes.... this one only has a few.... the next one will be wool, and hopefully no mistakes.... Right now I'm hand sewing the armhole and all 18 buttonholes on a waistcoat...... Next I think I will start making a cartridgebox......
-
I finished the jacket.... The eagle eyed out there will notice that the buttons are not brass (yet...) I used these untill I can get the ones that I want....I Needed something to close the jacket. Shows the mariners cuffs buttoned closed... I was suprised that the wool blanket didn't turn out too thick. It's just the right weight for a jacket.....

In the muzzleloading forum, there are a few guys that have made wheel locks.... you might wanna check it out for more info........ http://www.muzzleloadingforum.com (I wonder it they are starting to get worried.... there are a few of the Pub's Pyrates posting there...... )

I'm not sure.... I might be totaly off on this.... What was the company that Disney owned that they used for non-Disney movies?.... That Dragon one pops into mind......are Disney and Pixar going to remaine seperate? but kinda work together? You know that you can take kids to a Disney movie, and it will be "good clean fun" (some scenes may be a little scary for real young children..) And there is nothing wrong with that.... but some storys "work" better with some non-Disney humor.... now they can do both......
-
I can't find the link right now... but the NRA has a list of gun laws by state... black powder weapons are exempt from a lot of the laws for modern weapons... But I might print out and carry in my cartridge box a copy, just so if I run into a overly gung-ho cop, I have the information to show him..... Weapons laws might be an interesting topic for Capt. Twill.... sence many historic reenactors carry real weapons (as opposed to non-firing copys...)

A blunderbuss with a bayonet would be a cool project to make.... but knowing my luck, the State of California would consider it a switchblade..........

If you look around, you can find shorter clay pipes. or get one of the longer ones, and keep using it when that stem breaks so it's shorter. I keep mine in the brim of my hat, so it's outta "harms way" but I want to get a back-up because I know it will get broken one of these days.... Interesting thing about clay pipes.... when they turn brown after you've smoked them for awhile.... just put it in a fire overnight, and it will burn all the tar out, and next morning it will be clean and white again.....
