  1. That's a lot of firsts! I've heard some of that before, but not much. Didn't Lewis and Clark also find Indians wearing English sailor's clothing that they had traded for, when they got to the coast?
  2. I don't think I ever posted here when I was around some months (or was it years?) ago. Jessie is my name, easy as that. K is my last initial. I'm not very creative when it comes to giving myself names, tho other people have come up with some pretty good ones for me.
  3. Oh, I'm not saying we don't get pirates in SCA, we certainly do; because pirates are pretty much timeless. But we've never done Ren Faires, because historically speaking the Middle Ages and the Renaissance weren't the same time. I'm not trying to criticize, I was just curious what other groups do or definitely don't do. The thing I've always liked about SCA is that it's lenient, which is great for students, or families, because it's less expensive that way, and doesn't take as much time. We have people wandering around in period-perfect garb, and others in jeans and a tunic. Most of us, including myself, enjoy going to Ren Faires, we just don't hold them ourselves, in general.
  4. I'm curious--you're in a SCA group that does Renaissance Faires? I've been in SCA for 3 years now, and we've never done a Ren Faire, because it's out of period--we only go up to about 1500. Maybe it's just the difference between West Coast SCA and Midwest SCA. We are a bit strange out here in the sticks!
  5. Your Birthdate: November 29 You have the mind of an artist, even if you haven't developed the talent yet. Expressive and aware, you enjoy finding new ways to share your feelings. You often feel like you don't fit in - especially in traditional environments. You have big dreams. The problem is putting those dreams into action. works for me... Your strength: Your vivid imagination I'll say! Your weakness: Fear of failure possibly... Your power color: Coral No. No, no, no. Your power symbol: Oval No idea what that's supposed to mean...anyone? Your power month: November It's a good month.
  6. Very cool--that's the first time that ever made sense to me.
  7. Wow. That's insane. Having been around babies as much as I have, my first question is...how do they get the babies to leave them on?
  8. I'm a full time college student, which is job enough, and I work in the library archives, which is a great job, except for the whole minimum wage thing. Yuck. This summer I'm hoping to get back into archaeology, because it pays so much better, and it's outdoors! Best job I've ever had.
  9. Ah yes, sorry there, overlooked the obvious, but thanks! I've been told it's Viking, but nobody seems to know just how old.
  10. I dunno, maybe public toilets that aren't coin operated? :)
  11. Does anyone know how old the game koobs/kubbs is, or how late it would have been played?
  12. "I have the last solid-bottomed "Horn Mug" on earth, it would seem" Not the last...I know my reenacting group has one or two in with it's loaner gear. Look exactly like that; I think we have one solid bottomed one, and maybe one hollow one.
  13. I got 54% strange, but I think it would have been off the chart if they'd let me put in my own answers--seriously, half of those just didn't work for me. Now if _I_ made up the answers...
  14. There's also a reference to it in the New Testament, tho not in the same words, of course.
  15. It's nearly impossible to take a bad picture of the ocean, isn't it?
  16. Maybe they were simply too expensive for most people? I know I, personally, would not be able to see much farther than my nose without glasses or contact lenses. And while reading may not have been an issue, things like sewing would have been troublesome without glasses.
  17. Mad Jack, had I known you were at the MN Ren. Faire in August, I woulda went then instead of this weekend! Ah well, maybe next year. The only ones here I've met before are Foxe and Cire, in Bristol, England over the summer.
  18. I'm a college student, I unfortunately don't have time for gardening, but in the yard of the farmhouse we've just moved into is a rhubarb patch. Mmm. I have a single potted plant, a bloodleaf, which I call Rusty. My mother, bless her, has a huge garden at home, so I've been raiding it all summer whenever I go home for tomatoes, corn, beans, etc. I actually miss weeding it! My 12-year-old self would never have believed I just said that.
  19. Oh my gosh, that Calvin and Hobbes one just described me..."I pragmatically turn my whims into principles." I love it!
  20. Right...now to find someone from whom I can borrow a flintlock.
  21. I could go for some Irish Mist right about now. OR...y'know what's really good, but really the sissiest alcoholic drink ever? Mint chocolate Bailey's in chocolate milk. With oreos. No kidding.
  22. That's the kind of thing that would make me say "That was fun; let's do it again!" But I'm a bit morbid.
  23. Generally I just glare at people who call me a wench. I really prefer not to be called that, but I won't fly off the handle either.
