  7. Well thinking practically, I would have preferred boots over the shoes. They would help keep your feet warm and dry, they would offer some protection from rope burns, splinters and just other ship type elements, and as with the shoe the heel could help you climb rigging. I don’t believe that they would have thrown them away either, these are poor desperate men, hunted criminals, they would have kept what ever belongings they had, make them last for as long as they could. I’m not saying that is all they wore, me myself would prefer a choice shoes, boots and barefoot. As for not seeing them in many illustrations and paintings, like I said earlier when one posses for a portrait, painted or drawn, they dress nice and boots were not as fancy as buckle shoes and stockings. You wouldn’t wear your work clothes to go get a picture taken would you?
  8. Correct, with the tight fitting cavalry boot wearing stocking would able him to pull off the boots easier. But the bucket boots in question aren't as tight and form fitting. And true if they were to fill up with water they would send you straight to see davy.
  9. Aye, I've said it once Diego and I'll say it again. Us sorry sailors need every scrap of scripture we can get.
  10. I heard it was true and that keith wanted to play the part, but his first priority was to the rolling stones.
  11. I wish I could say that I knew the reliability of the second picture, but I can't. It said it was an 18th century illustration of a sailor. I don't recall where I found it I'll have to look. The last illustration are of whalers of the 18th century. As we all know the boot was actually designed to provide protection while riding a horse and was folded up and then while on foot it was folded down. Whalers and fishermen who were also sailors adopted these boots for the same purpose ,with the whalers they used it to provide protection from cutting blubber and the mess. The reason I posted that pic was because, they were sea faring men who could have very well turned or forced to go on the account. As for the protection, I will still have to disagree with Hawkyns and Capn Will, bullets, no they could not have stopped them at all, but damage from splintering I think they would have provided some amount, better than stockings or bare skin. Now I’m not saying they used the boots as armor. As for part of the leather entering the wound when shot and festering , not likely, it will go through it but it won’t take a piece with it.. Thin fabric will go with the round. How do I know this you ask? Well when I was in the service we had extra time on our hands and liked to shoot stuff especially manikins wearing clothes, one wore an old leather biker jacket. The rounds would just split the jacket, not pop a hole out of it. Now we were using modern rounds and not round musket shot, so I could be flawed there. All I’m really saying is that there is always a little bit of truth to something, we know they existed and were there, chances are that more than one sailor wore them. Hell for all we know, the few period illustrations and etchings that we have where we see the majority wearing buckle shoes, could in fact be the minority, it is just that those pictures are the only ones that happened to survive. Unlikely, yes, but it could happen.
  12. That be very honorable Christine, but maybe we should worry about us warm blood lads on board first.
  13. *turns from scanning the sea and looks up to see the new flag waving in the wind. * Aye, she be a beaut. That sure should scare our prey into submitance.
  14. Yep, I gotta say they are bad ass. Well worth every penny. I love mine.
  15. http://podiatry.curtin.edu.au/boot.html These are some images and links that I have, it proves that sailors did wear boots. My personal opinoin, I would think that they would provide more protection when in battle. And on a ship in general, with ropes and splinters and such. True most etchings show pirates in stockings and buckle shoes, but since that was fancy and high fashion at the time, they would have worn them while posing for the etching, just like dressing up to take a picture. At the time boots were working class. Since none of us were actually there and since pirates were outlaws on the run from the law, traveling to different exotic ports around the world its safe to say that they wore a variety of different clothes especialy since they were pore and would have taken what they could get, we really can't say what they wore, we can just guesstamate.
  16. *walks by the mast to see a letter posted, reads it and hangs head, pulls out pipe and lights it* I,m gone for a few days, and look what happens. * walks over and sits on the bow of the ship, pulls out spy glass and takes a long drag on his pipe while scanning the sea.*
  17. *a small sloop aproches the bay and ways anchor. A long boat is slowly lowered into the water. Six sailors row the long boat towards the Watch Dog, at the the bow of the long boat stands a tall lean figure.* Ahoy Watch Dog! * the long boat pulls up next to the peir, all the sailors jump out and start hoisting a huge cannon out of the long boat using the docks crain and pullies , while petee stands on the peir giving direction. When the cannon is lowered on to the peir, the sailors jump back into the long boat and sail away, Petee gives a wave good by. And walks up to the watch dogs main deck*
