  1. Kass I like your idea about the handkerceif. It could double as a fancy do rag when I do my dressed as a man bit. What size would you reommend? the 11x11"? It looks like I might be getting a lot more cochineal. A garden volunteer noticed a neighbor's cactus was infested with them. He's going to ask his neighbor if I can harvest them. I see by Capt. Enigma post that they should be dried to prevent decay. Does anyone know the best method of drying them to produce the best red? Thanks for everyone's suggetions! :)
  2. There's also a wonderful new book on the history of cochineal, if you're interested. I bet your library could ILL a copy if you don't have it already. It's called "A Perfect Red: Empire, Espionage, and the Quest for the Color of Desire" by Amy Butler Greenfield >> Kass That book is in the Botanical Library. I'll check it out. I will have access to more cochineal but I like the idea to try a handkerchef first. I'll check out Silk Connection. Thanks!
  3. I've just been give about a gram of cochineal from the gardens here! Does anyone know how to dye with it? How much would I need to dye enough cloth for a size 4/6 mantua or fitted bodice gown using silk? Thanks
  4. I don'r mean to be boastful but I once impressed a Rom with my fortune telling skill. No really.
  5. Mouser yes ratter no. Too many people in PRP have rattie friends and I like their rattie friends. :) Ditto on silly dog names.
  6. Jacky my last cat was named Grimalkin which is MiFdle English for grey cat, which he was. I can't silly names like Socks or Fluffy for cats. All cats walk like an Egyptian because the rmember they were worshipped as Gods once by them. :)
  7. Well I have a new cat. My best friend Osa”s neighbor died suddenly and his girlfriend was left with his 3 cats plus her own 3 cats in a single apartment. She found a home for all but one and was going to take her to the animal shelter if I didn’t take her. She’s 6 years old a brown/grey tuxedo tabby. She beautiful, sweet, gentle and very affectionate. I’m her 3rd human. Her given name I am sad to say is Chubby. Yes she isn’t the svelteist kitty around but how mean to name her Chubby! I am trying to wean her off the name and I want to rename her Bouhaki the oldest known cat name. Bou is ancient Egyptian for house and haki means ruler. Yes those Egyptians understood. ;-) Please all welcome the newest ship’s cat! Maria
  8. In case anyone is interested I have an excellent article from the Papers of the American Bibliogrphical Society that deals with the authorship of GHP. It is titled: Daniel DeFoe, Nathaniel Mist, & the General History of the Pirates. It very throughly and logically, with primary source amterial, deals with the GHP authorship issue. Anyone who wants a copy contact me offline.

  10. I took the terst and here's what I got: No idea. You scored 49% Gypsanity and 50% Piratitude Nice costume. Uh...Could go either way. Let me buy you a drink and we'll discuss it My test tracked 2 variables How you compared to other people your age and gender: You scored higher than 99% on Gypsanity You scored higher than 99% on Piratitude I really liked the question about singing. My answer : My friends and I sing in a group, and whole crowds join in. The songs are easy, funny, and memorable. You don't know how true this is! :)
  11. Gypsys more properly called Rom are an ethinic group. Originally Dravidan people from Northern India pushed out by the Aryan invasions (Indo-European people not Nazis) who wondered from India through Central Asia to the Middle East to Northern Africa through Turkey and by both ways into Europe. Being outsiders they were reagrded with fear and as inferior. Subsequently they had to make a living as best they could. Horses, fortune telling and yes the occasional theft. They have their own language and belielfs. They are very different from pirates in every sense of the word. Whoever said they were the same is an bigoted, ignorant idiot.
  12. Thanks hurricane. The Library received a notice of this exhibtion but no online link. It looks great. :)

  21. That's tha Sausilito address and is no longer valid. The sad thing is that just before this I got a postcard from Kathy saying she was going to send me their new address in a couple of weeks. Rusty Barrels I'd PM the Royaliste (since it seems Gary has occasional internet access) and ask to whom and where to send a check.
  22. Ding Dong the ship's afloat They'll save the boat Ding Dong the Royaliste is saved!
  23. I went to Puerto Rico to visit relatives when I was 12. A branch of my family has been on the island since 1512 (royal land grant holders). I remember Old San Juan very well and I loved the Old World feel of it streets. I particularly remember a very good restaurant in a very old hotel. I can't remeber the name but it's the oldest one in Old San Juan. Do you know it Billy? Please do keep us inform on the Blackbeard film!
  24. Bess Even Gary's & Kathy's cel phone are submerged? This is terrible.
