I'm pretty sure the pistols of the 1600s were doglock pistols NOT Queen Anne, and Jeff MacKay sells one on his website.

I agree, sounds like it'll be a goodun' even if it's set a few decades after the Golden Age.

Knee Pistols, first evidence?
Dread Pyrate Greyhound replied to Commodore Swab's topic in Captain Twill
I've also notice having a pistol with a clip on the side is very practical. If your baldric is thick enough, the clip ensures that it stays put beautifully. -
The third one had some good parts and some bad ones, just like any movie. For the most part I'm actually looking forward to seeing On Stranger Tides. Especially with Blackbeard and the Queen Anne's Revenge taking part. Me and some of our mates in the Devil's Brood are probably going in full garb to see it. "Now then, Should I be wearin' me blue frock or me red one?" Ponders the Red Gentleman

Henry Morgan Ship Found?
Dread Pyrate Greyhound replied to Diosa De Cancion's topic in Captain Twill
So if this is Morgan's ship it would make it the...what... fourth or fifth European pirate ship being excavated? After Bellamy's Whydah, Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge, and Kidd's Adventure Prize. It's always interesting to see what they bring up from the wrecks of pirate ships. They don't always carry gold and silver from their raids. And if this one was on its way to Panama, chances are there won't be much booty on the wreck. -
Knee Pistols, first evidence?
Dread Pyrate Greyhound replied to Commodore Swab's topic in Captain Twill
The reason I ask is i'd like to get me hands on a blunderbuss and I'm trying to think of the most practical way to carry it, when not having it out. I know two pirates who carry their blunderbusses in arrow quivers strapped to their backs. I saw these saw the were shorter and wondered about it. But I do know holsters at the side were more common to late 1800s in the 'Wild West'. -

Ok.... but what i meant was, would it be practical to get a holster, and strap it to your thigh. Would you be able to Draw it? Would it be difficult to pull it it out? They're basically blunderbusses, but a little shorter than some of the ones I've seen for sale. That's what got me wondering. -
Who was the REAL LIFE Pirate King?
Dread Pyrate Greyhound replied to Dread Pyrate Greyhound's topic in Captain Twill
You guys make a lot of excelent points, but someone must have come close. The primary reason i wouldn't cast my vote for Captain Ward, even with the ballad written about him, is the the fact that the ballad is all we have as evidence of his existance. Personally, in the sense of exploits, Black Bart came closest with the 400 odd ships he took and the small fleet he commanded. He was the last great pirate of the golden age, even if he eventually was killed rather quickly. But the HMS Swallow did fire a broadside of antipersonel shot. It was bound to hit someone. As far as a pirate king in the sense of comanding a mass fleet, Morgan came closest. He was elected 'Admiral' of the Brethren of the Coast. Essentally, every pirate/buccaneer active at this time would have been under his command. How do you think he took all those Treasure Cities? Although, him primarily having exploits on land, is a dampener for that arguement. A few times I have heard Blackbeard refered to as the Pirate King, but this was most likely due to his infamy, and the legend that surrounds him. Not anything he actually accomplished. -
As an artist, I have drawn ships with their wheel positoned both fore and aft of the Mizzenmast. Though from what I know, Bos'n Cross is exactly right.

I have noted that in popular depictions of Blackbeard's ship, she was a large vessel with a Spritsail Topmast. But every once in a while you'll find one where she has a plain bowsprit. Any thought as to which depiction is right? Personally I think the Queen Anne looks better with a Spritsail Topmast, but they were more common in the 1600s, not the 1700s when Blackbeard would've taken and then converted her for pyracy.

I blame the people at this faire for making me the marauding miscreant I am today. First as a Patron, then a Cast Member, and now the co-founder of a pirate guild. Ah... good times.... But enough reminising, I highly recomend people to go to this faire if they live in Northern Ohio, or nearby areas. As cast of this faire for 4 years and a patron for the rest of my life, those interested in rennaisance Festivals and pirates should definatly check it out, also this year (2011) There will be a Pirate Encampment in the pirate area the Raiders of the North Shore under Captain Maddog McRea. I go every year, so if you head up, be sure and drop me a line, and I'll give you some inside information I'm glad ye brought this up Syren, i was goin' to if no-one else had, so I'll contibute. you ever been to Great Lakes?

Huh, Put In Bay is practically down the street from me but I've never heard of this event. Is it a Pirate Festival? I'll have to look into that, are there any websites you give me links to?

They're pretty cool. I love 'Up and Away". Some guy actually made a bunch of Anime Music Videos to the Poxy boggard's songs. They have drawings of popular manga characters in period attire going through a slide show. They're on youtube, just search for 'Poxy Boggards AMV' or 'Anime Shanties'

Wow, pretty good. I've been tryin' to put together a chart book made of maps of the pirate's hunting Grounds. Several of the Caribbean, one or two in Madagascar Waters, and a few others. Little tip though, if you've ever seen maps from that era, they never showed the exact coastline since they weren't as accurate as modern charts. That's why I work from pictures of period maps in my collection of pirate books. And the Ship is a nice touch too.

How long are these? And would it be practical to strap one to your thigh? Looks like you could with a couple of them. -
The hat I got my avatar in Pirate of the Caribbean Online is almost Identical to this one, it's a nice hat, but is more Napolionic than PotC timeframe

Who was the REAL LIFE Pirate King?
Dread Pyrate Greyhound replied to Dread Pyrate Greyhound's topic in Captain Twill
Not Sure if Avery could truly be called a Pirate King. Despite what was claimed by people at the time, that he had an entire Madagascar Kingdom composed of pirates, all he really had was the frigate Fancy and two sloops that sailed in consort with him. But I agree with Foxe, though they called Jennings 'Commodore', he probably came closest since he commanded the 200 odd opirate ships that were supposed to be anchored in New Providence at this time. Though in my opinion, to be considered a Pirate King, you would have had to be a die-hard buccaneer, and I'm pretty sure Jennings took the Royal Pardon offered by Woodes Rogers. Morgan actually came closer, with all the Buccaneers he commanded, and his grand exploits, but the main thing in the way of him having the title is he was a British privateer, and held favor with King Charles II. -
Downloading Pirate of the Burning Sea on a laptop, hopefully It'll actually work on this computer *Knocks on Wood*

Pop Culture seems to be obsessesed with the idea of a so called "Pirate King" from One Piece's Gold Roger to Captain Teague and then Elizabeth Swan from Pirates of the Caribbean, and many in between. So my question is this mates.... What real life pirate came closest to achieving the legendary Status that all these fictional Pirate Kings possess, wether through ships plundered, what they accomplished, how many vessels they commanded, or other criteria?
