  1. First question would be what do you want to use said sloop for? I live aboard a 28.5 ft. LOA Pearson Triton, it is much smaller than your averaging cruising boat, but maintenance costs, procurement cost and dockage are much less than a larger boat. My solution may not work for you though, so a basic idea of what your needs are would help find an appropriate solution, for example, 1. What will you be using said sloop for? 2. How much sailing experience do you have? 3. Roughly, how much is your project budget? 4. Do you want a turn key boat, a project boat, or something in between? 5. Is this a day sailor, a weekender, or for extended cruising/living aboard? 6. Any construction preferences (fiberglass, steel, wood)? 7. What dockage solution do you have (driveway, on the hard, in water)? My baby... BOAT = Break Out Another Thousand, unless, of course it's over 40 ft. LOA then it's Ten-thousand...
  2. Harry, while we have yet to meet face to face, I was looking forward to so doing when I get to Key West, not to mention picking your brain regarding cannons. Hope all goes well in Arizona, they do have some pirates festivals and you are not too far from a lot of folks on the west coast who do as well. Fair winds and following seas.
  3. Excellent suggestion Lady B. I'd be willing to pay more for something like that too.
  4. My favorite hands down is Pyrat XO Reserve in the affordable category, if price be no object, Cask 23. And for a cheap mixer, Admiral Nelson Dark Premium Rum is surprisingly good. I'm also fond of Appleton Extra and 21 and Flor de Cana. I am currently searching for one called El Dorado 15 which I have it on good authority is an excellent rum. If you are really interested in rum, wonder over to the Ministry of Rum.
  5. I will have to watch again (recorded it) but I think he was carrying three pistols at the beginning and I believe he fired all three including the final shot plus the blunderbuss which knocked Mr. High and Mighty on his arse.
  6. Saint Augustine is a great place. I was heading for the Keys when I dropped anchor here but decided to ride out hurricane season in Saint Augustine. Went to cannon school at the Castillo and will meet up with the local pirate group and Joe when I get back this weekend. Lots to do.
  7. WRT construction methods, have any of you taken a look at the Foxfire books? Seems the first one had an article on building using wooden pins. I think it was building a cabin, but the method should work on smaller projects.
  8. Have you considered a gold plated version? Wonder what that would do to the cost?
  9. The final frontier... Opportunities for a bit of honest pyratin...
  10. This sounds like a lot of fun, but I be with Syren on the name thing. Is there any allowance for those who already have a kit? An actual pirate reenactor day at the park would be awesome. Not to mention a big draw for the park, don't you think? In any event I may have to go to see this. :) Will you be there?
  11. HMS Surprise (ex HMS Rose) Master and Commander (2003) was still named Rose at the time of the filming and at least shortly there after when I saw her in San Diego. They renamed her to take advantage of her movie affiliation. Another one for your list is Treasure Island (1990) a made for TV movie which is perhaps, and IMHO, the best screen adaptation of Treasure Island ever made. HMS Bounty appears in this film as the Hispaniola. Tried to find which ships took part in the 1937 Captains Courageous with Spenser Tracy, but haven't found a resource yet. Great list though, very interesting.
  12. Playing PotC Online, debating whether or not to try a new PS3 game I just got or watch a movie. Decisions, decisions... Retirement be grand mates...
  13. I flew home to see my Spouse, planning on taking her for a ride in the convertible to see the last of the blue bonnets but it's been raining all week.
