  1. Here I be at the Buccaneer in Charles Towne, Carolina Colony
  2. I just picked this up at the Castillo de San Marcos here in Saint Augustine and have just started reading it so take these comments with a grain of salt. It does seem very readable and interesting, I'm just not sure if the motivations Woodard attributes to the pirates are accurate although I would like them to be The first democracy in the new world was that of a pirate ship and it isn't much of a leap of logic to see this as a precursor to the American Revolution but whether or not the pirates saw themselves as some kind of noble social experiment remains questionable to me. 3. I am currently cruising south on the ICW and should make St. Agustine in a few more days. By the time PiP rolls around I should be on a mooring in Boot Key Harbor so count me in. I'd also be interested in building one of these to use as a tender and for just messing about locally. Is there a set of working plans we could take a look at?
  4. Congratulations mate, see you in the Keys.
  5. Welcome aboard mate. Pyratin' pays better and there be more rum. Speaking of which...
  6. This topic reminded me of something. During the fur trade, guns were referred to as so many shots per pound of lead, for example, 32 shots per pound was around a 52 caliber. for obvious reasons, a mountainman did not want to have to haul any more lead around than he had to and he wanted what he had to go as far as possible, so large bore weapons were rare. Were muskets etc. referred to by caliber or shots per pound during the GAoP?
  7. None of us be obsessed with pyrates, just rum and treasure, mostly... Welcome aboard mate.
  8. I seen one of them fairies once. Took about five bottles of rum, though... Welcome to the Pub mate, luck be with ye.
  9. Ahoy mate, and welcome to the Pub. I wish ye luck with your steamin' Capt. Jack does make fine hats.
  10. i remember reading a report years ago on an old muzzleloader someone had found that had been stored for years and years which had had the barrel filled with bees wax by the last user. Reportedly when the wax was removed, the bore was in pristine condition. Has anyone else had any experience with this sort of storage method?
  11. I was thinking it might be good to rig some kind of air line with an extension, brass tubing perhaps, that could reach down the barrel to the breach. This could be used to cause airflow out of the barrel and greatly reduced drying time. You could power it using a leaf blower or compressor.
  12. I've watched people clean cannons swabbing with water followed by swabbing with motor oil . They did not dry out the barrel before applying the oil so it occurs to me this might actually keep water in contact with the barrel liner longer then not applying oil, although the oil would limit exposure to the air. It seems to me wither swabbing with a dry patch until all water was removed or depressing the barrel and allowing to dry before applying the oil would be preferable. I am curious as to what procedures our those of you who own and/or fire cannons use?
  13. Welcome to the Pub Mr. Bones.
  14. Welcome aboard Sarah, fair winds to ye and confusion to your enemies.
  15. Charleston Events Calendar 2009 Tall Ships - June 26-29 Pyrate Week at Patriot's Point - September 14-20 Charles Towne Few Point of Contact: Captain Red Richard
  16. Animal, I hope to have the events calendar up shortly. Cap'n Bo, Charleston is an great place if you have any interest in history at all. I sailed in here back in December and haven't seen a fraction of what's available yet. I did manage to visit what is called "The Old Provost Dungeon" which is now the cellar of the "Old Exchange". This is part of the "Half Moon Battery which is the location of the building in which Col. Rhett was commissioned to go after pirates, eventually capturing Stede Bonnet. It is also where Stede Bonnet was imprisoned along with his crew. A section of the original seawall which made up "Half Moon Battery is still down there, so you can tread where actual pyrates of the GAoP have tread before.
