  1. Bravo Ms. Hari, well written. A primer for those of us who will need to answer such questions in the future.
  2. LOL, that's kind of a leap of faith, but hay... Hat size. As is... Man in a department store to the clerk in ladies wear. Man, "Mam I'd like to by a fancy bra for my spouse." Cleak, "What size sir?" Man, "7 1/2" Clerk, "7 1/2? That's awfully small. How did you measure her sir?" Man, "With my hat."
  3. Brought this up with the historian at the fort today relative to Spanish Florida. He said facial hair, which the natives could not grow, was an indication of Spanish heritage and common in the frontier outpost of Spain as a symbol that you were a Spaniard. Knowing a little about the social structure of modern Mexico, not to mention Albuquerque vs El Paso (Albuquerque sided with the Spanish and still considers themselves Spanish vs Mexician) this seems logical.
  4. I'll be manning a cannon at el Castillo de San Marcos on the 9th, so if any of ye scurvy pirates want to pay us a visit I'm sure ye'll get a bang out of it.
  5. Aye, it would be fun to have one of those if they still exist.
  6. One thing I found interesting was the similarity between slops and the cargo shorts we wear today.
  7. Actually I think the Fountain of Youth thing might fit into the movie. There is the Castillo de San Marcos a Fort Matanzas sitting right hear which could (with a bit of CG) make great sets for such a film, and unlike Singapore, they actually existed during the GAoP. It might also be interesting to see the pirates actually commit an act of piracy, but that probably won't happen, too politically incorrect at the moment.
  8. Back in Florida, 80-something and humid. Molds and sea vegetation along the waterline are happy, although I attacked the waterline with a scrubbing pad this morning so the sea scum may not be all that happy. I am working on making a forward hatch air conditioner housing for when it really heats up here.
  9. There is a similar issue with buckskinning and the rocky mountain fur trade. You have a lot of bearded mountain men, however records show a lot of shaving equipment was taken to rendezvous to trade to the trappers. The major reason, the Indians did not like facial hair and if you were trading with them, as all trappers did, you did not want to offend. Dosen't mean I'm going to lose the beard though.
  10. Posted this in a thread about uniform colors but here's what I'm working on right now, Spanish Marine c. 1740
  11. The Library of Congress has Johnson listed as fiction? Well they also have him listed as being Defoe so I may need to reevaluate what weight I give to their opinions in the future. Based on current research I would suggest neither conclusion is justified although the Johnson is Defoe argument is still under discussion. While Johnson did take certain liberties, as many modern historians do, most of what he has written is substantiated by the records of the time and if we are going to classify his General History as fiction we must also assume Johnson was lying when he, speaking in the third person, stated in the preface to the first edition:
  12. Michael, I just got back to Saint Augustine after a week or so away. My understanding is this uniform is the result of research conducted by the National Park Service (they provided the uniform). I'll be seeing some of the guys shortly and will see if I can find out how they determined this was the correct uniform for the period. I'll let you know what they say. Most of the GAoP research by reenactors is English based. Although the focus of the living history display as El Castillo is 1740, which coincides with the major English attack on the fort, there is a wealth of knowledge here regarding the earlier period which is why I have decided to stay in the area for hurricane season. I am greatly enjoying discussing the Spanish perspective with the staff and senior volunteers.
  13. Wouldn't this vary with nationality and social class?
  14. They're ALL project boats. A boat that is "done" is a boat on the market. I've got a little Cape Dory myself. Nice to see someone else on an alberg. You can get a more or less turn key boat (sails, anchors, electronics etc) but of course you will still need life jackets, first aid kits, pots, pans, and so forth. Problem with this approach it is the high dollar way to go sailing. I have a friend with a Cape Dory 27, very nice boat indeed. And I do love the lines of Alberg's boats. I was walking the dock when I saw my baby. It was love at first sight. There are free boats available, but they are generally very neglected and require a lot of work. If you tackle one of these the rebuilding process can be very rewarding and you will know your craft inside and out. If you are interested in going this route PM me and I'll send you some websites which will be of assistance.
