  1. apples, oranges, dried beef dip, crab dip, crackers, cookies, 5 gallon drink container, gatorade/koolaid ??,... kinda the same thing we have done before... anyone see a problem with that ?? or do we need to change the menu any ??? or wiil this be fine ??
  2. afew old vw's, parted out other vw's, engines, trannies, and too much other crap i'm embarassed to admit ....
  3. pick an event, contact the organizers and explain your interest in showing up and checking things out, show up - even if you're just in street clothes, introduce yourself to a nearby friendly pirate, check stuff out, ask questions, and most of all...have fun !! fort de chartres in prarie de rocher, illinois and the santa maria in columbus, ohio are two close, upcoming events... the pirate encampment at the fort is a new thing this year... everyone i've met is always friendly... we're there to have fun, too !!
  4. bo, i can bring the monster van minus the seats... 12' is about as long as i can carry with the doors closed... other wise a bungee cord is needed... i'm kinda leaning towards near the event, maybe two weeks before... pm me your addy again, i've lost it... again !! capt. scurvy... would be great if you can make it !! we can always make room for you...as of right now, i don't think anyone in your vicinity is joining us at this time, but hope you can be there !! capt. J , have you seen the weight of some of these guys ?? !! my 170# is no match to those that which i have laid eyes upon !!
  5. hey bo, are your tents still available for use ?? i may pick them up just in case one or two are needed... 9 sounds about right... if we add one or two, we can squeeze them in where room allows... our two wall tents and fly take up alot of room...
  6. ok... the list so far is as follows... kate and micheal souris professor death capt. J and partner in crime jim keele ( and maybe his partner in crime ) rusty, carl and aj the thatchers ( 7 to 11 crew ) chad and two small sons ( possibly his wife, also ) any one missing ??? michael, i know that patricia and shannon showed some interest... may be too early to tell, though...
  7. mission, the hyatt will not allow goats !! sheep, yes... but no goats... i think it's something about a recent goat convention gone horribly wrong... i'm sure that had something to do with it...
  8. i'm pretty sure that looms came in wider widths, but as for sails,it seems the narrower widths were necessary as sort of a strain relief, otherwise blown out sails would be the result, and it helps retain the necessary shape of the sail itself... lighter sails with broader widths, and heavier sails with narrower widths seems to make sense...
  9. from what i understand, the panels that were sewn together to make up a sail started off as about 20" in width due to the width of the loom... my question is.... were all looms about 20" in width as a standard, or were only the looms for eventual sail construction about 20" wide ??? it seems to me that looms could easily have been wider than 20" for any kind of cloth, but for sails, i keep finding 20" widths... if looms were wider than 20", but for sails, they were 20", then why ?? was the 20" wide panels necessary for retaining sail shape ?? or did looms only come in 20" widths ??
  10. add 3 more people.... rusty, carl and aj... they will also be bringing their rope walk !!
  11. add two more people.... jim and rhonda... jim has his own tents, etc...
  12. i have another added t our group... he will be bringing his two small children and possibly his wife if she doesn't have to work... i talked to another group that may be joining us, may not... haven't heard any word back just yet, though... the boat would be nice, but right now i'd rather have a coffee pot :)
  13. at this point, will anyone need tentage ??? capt. bo of wtf has graciously offered use of his tents and anything else he has.... don't wanna make the trip if it is not necessary....
  14. j, i have the pattern... it is on my list o' stuff to do... but on the bottom of the list... i have some other priorities that should be tended to first... and then i can do my other projects... if it looks like we will be flagless, then i will do my best to get one done... ( we have to have a flag !! )
  15. same thing here... getting a "no commitment" from people who usually go as pirates... most of those are comitted to other events and some fell under the "bad economy" surprise... kinduva bad weekend all around !! we will make the best of things !!
  16. foxe -- waxed hemp sail thread ?? where would one get ahold of such an animal ?? one article ( provided by dutch) mentioned using "the finest english linen thread" for sails... was hemp sail thread used more than linen thread ?? none of the books i have mention the thread used for sails, just the general overall construction of the sails... ( i may want a better book ) one of my projects for later is to make a fairly accurate sail, a small one, yet a sail none the less, so any thought s are appreciated...
  17. well i was trying to be positive and generous... i obviously needed to consider the dogge factor in all of this :)
  18. you know what the great thing about this show is ??? it lends a tremendous amount of credence to reenactors of the gaop...and with some of the fine talents in front of the camera, it should be a grand success...
  19. michael summed it up pretty well... everyone usually brings food to eat and share... same with drinks of any kind... it works out fairly well... everyone contributes a little of everything, loan to those who don't have and so far everything has worked out great with that system... callenish brought some killer meat pies, others brought a ham, a bag of oranges, apples, bread, cookies, dip of some kind, cheese, crackers, jennie gist made some killer dinners... you get the idea !!
  20. IIRC, you crank at one end, hold the other stationary, use the cross pieces to help "guide" the twist... with this set up, one could lay the yarns right, lay the rope left ( i think that's correct ) the stationary end moves as the rope is shortened by the twisting, i think... is that the correct way, morgan ??
  21. now that i know what one is, here are a few pics of one set up from 2008 st. louis piratefest... carl, rusty and aj are the gentlemen doing the demo...in one of the pics, a clearer view of the winding mechanism is visible...
  22. ok, i'll bite...what exactly is a rope walk ??
