I have the duct tape double blog saved... its a matter of getting someone to help me! I guess I'll have to coerce hubby into doing it. =) Cook and Seamstress to the Half Moon Marauders Lady Brower's Treasures, Clothing and other treasures Hell Hath No Fury like the Wrath of a Woman... Cheeky Actress
Oy! Cheeky... be THIS by any chance one of those lacy head thingies like th' ones ye wear? The Met Museum had this there and only labeled it as Lace from 18th c, only details they had were it was made of linen in Venice. ~Lady B Ooo, now that's a lovely example of a Fontage, Lady B. And it's probably the first quarter of the 18th century, also. Edited February 1, 2009 by Cheeky Actress Member of "The Forsaken"

LadyBarbossa
So that IS a Fontage? (Yeah, had a brainfart at post midnight last night when I posted that) So.. um... what is that messy stuff that seems to stiffen it? I tried to get a closer look at it and was baffled. They had quite a bit of piccies of lace online... A bit bewildered though what the use of some of them. ~Lady B Tempt Fate! an' toss 't all t' Hell!" Hairdos?!?!...hmm...Okay, pull your hair back into a bun and cover your head?!?! Tada! At least this is what I've seen in paintings for the common woman of the time. Court and Upper Class women did a few things differently. Because of their status and wealth they could afford hair-dressers and wigs. This goes with say, they would be the top of fashion. The Silacious Historian's Lair is a wonderful place to find a ton of information. Nicole Kipar's website includes historical notes on the French and English. Listed is everything from manners to court and common dress. I highly recommend taking some time to look about - especially at the period art work she has. LadyBarbossa
:::Shrugs::: I did a close inspection (as best I could since it got a tad fuzzy) on the Met site... and it was the lace on some fabric and under that fabric was this sort of mesh. Ye see the mesh at the bottom or the base of the fontage headpiece.. that wee strip of white something that's sticking out... I'm a bit bewildered about that. ~Lady B Tempt Fate! an' toss 't all t' Hell!" "I'm completely innocent of whatever crime I've committed." The one, the only,... the infamous! LadyBarbossa
That's it! Th' bottom image!... that's the fontage! So... umm... was it removable and could attatch to different caps? or was this just one of those pieces where it's missing a part of it cause it was removed at some point in time. And that mantua with that fontage, that's from the Met, too, isn't it? Or was that else where? I remember seeing that while googling. Cheeky... if it's horsehair... now I'll be kickin' m'self. Cause I had not but a couple months ago horse hair from a fine white Arabian show horse. Blast it! Oh, so many questions! But also answers some questions, too. Interesting. ~Lady B Tempt Fate! an' toss 't all t' Hell!" "I'm completely innocent of whatever crime I've committed." The one, the only,... the infamous! LadyBarbossa
Ahhh. that would make sense why the Met has so many lace pieces. I wondered if they were removed. The salmon mantua is very lovely, too. ~Lady B Tempt Fate! an' toss 't all t' Hell!" "I'm completely innocent of whatever crime I've committed." The one, the only,... the infamous! Kate Souris
Steering the discussion back to mantuas for a moment.... Full Length. It's not bustled yet. That is a whole separate can of worms...and I lost my can opener. A closer up detail of the front and stomacher. A very plain stomacher, but I don't feel the need for all of the frippery for this one. I like it a bit simpler with the matching belt. :)

LaraCorsets
Well see there, one good reason for her to make a good wife... If you were here I would smack you in the head for starting trouble like you do. I know my Brother to be a fool, but stupid....no. Marriage is for the getting of heirs.... think on that when you look into the eyes of any would be future wives. Besides you will tire of her as you do with all of hem. I have a lovely new Lass fresh from Derbyshire with rosy cheeks and hair like silk. Her father gave her to settle a bill and she is ripe for the plucking. Shall I save her for you dear?
