And some interesting images, that have subjects that don't really seem to be wearing any type of hoop

Wow! Awesome pictures Captain, thank you so much! Maybe someday I will be fancy and wear my beloved hoops. =) And I LOVE the pleating on that gown. It's just amazing!

LOL... Bat-hoops, hmm?

Ooooo... awesome image there, Sterling. Now, be this image the same outfit that Cheeky posted? Be there a lot of images on this?

Image from above

This one shows the pleating I am always talking about rather well...

First let me say ...I love it ...next let me say ...COUCH!

I was in a play once ...between the wooden comb in my hair and the boning in the stays and the hip roll and the fabric of the dress ...I felt like a couch! :P

Oh, God, help me... :(

Thank ye, Sterling. Found it... plus the other mantuas that was displayed on the page. It did have one image that gave a basic idea of it's "construction"... sort of. Kinda gives you the idea. The side with that pleating... interesting. But the sleeve pleats that way baffle me the most. Is it me, or was it possible the dress was an older dress and just... refitted and taken in?

When you get a chance and a copy, take a look at Janet Arnold's Mantua pattern in the back of Patterns of Fashion... I think its vol. 1

The sleeves on her pattern are pleated in a very similar fashion... I just like the Valdemar Gown for being another example of pleats on the outside....

Coolies.

Will be a while. Apparently that book is... rather pricy.

That's how the sleeves on my mantua are done more or less (I was going off that book for the patter, and the lovely lisa helped me make sense of it all).

I got my copy off of Amazon for 25 bucks... I thought it was worth it.

Oh My GOSH! I am so excited!!! I just came back from a garage sale, and they were selling ROLLS of decorator fabric for 2 and 5 dollars... I picked up some brocades and a velvet and I don't even know how many yards.... TONS! I found one that is really cool that I might try to replicate that slot gown out of. Granted, everything is cotton and blends, but it has the LOOK and for 15 bucks for a ton of fabric... it's enough to have some fun with. Before my dress though, hubby is getting a coat and waistcoat. YEY!

$25??!? Seriously? I'm with Cheeky.... the ones I've been seeing are around $100, give or take $20 at most. Wow... $25... I can SO handle that then. :) Easier to fork over that much than $100+.

Oh, wicked, Lady Brower! :) Nice find.

Are we talking about the same book? Patterns of Fashion 1, Janet Arnold. It's currently available from amazon, used for 18.87, new 26.37. List price on the back is 39.95, where are you seeing it for 100, so I know never to look for books there.
