Levis have been popular since 1880 . Imagine that.,you could be a cowboy ...,you could wear them in 1920 and people might think you were Clyde Barrow or., in the same white T shirt and levis in 57 and be James Dean or in San Pueblo as Danny Partridge in 72., and I see mis guided children wearin them today., tsk.,tsk.,they just dont know fashion.,Damn!., my whole life is a mess now because of this., I just dont know if I am gonna make it to the Washington Rennaisance Faire.,or cruise the Lady Washington this year.,you know it would be wrong to use both kits for the same event. Maybe I will just wear the levis and the baseball cap and go as 100 years period correct Levis? get me?., levis been around 100 years., so were many shirts., how long has this "POEAT SHIRT" we heard so much about been around...., a long time . Its come to a point its getting stupid. As an individual Its not my place to tell anyone what THEY ARE INTO and whatever THEY are doing bothers me. If a Re-enactor chooses the period correct thing cool., if someone else lightens it up a bit., who really cares., and what business is it of eithers ., this is not educational anymore., its all BS and has been for some time., No you cant all control the way its going to be., get over it. Personally I am doing what I do and I am not throwing away what I have to satisfy the likes of anyone here. Those photos of the two men with the floggers in red tights and his buddy was a great way to demoralize in order to expand your point. Thats about like me saying it isnt 1680 stupid.,get real your not a pirate., ever stole a ship or killed for proffit?., or any other historical Pirate factual deeds., of course not. So infact the bottom line is ., This is ALL a fantasy game., for all of us., including myself.,, its just too bad it has to be made into such a bummer. Anyone here ever think of expanding on this topico to their shrink., as thegood Dr. collects your money and you leave., their goona be shaking their heads thinking what a bunch of idiots. while they are making Cessna payments.,or what ever they are into. Get me again? Its a release., a little therapy., to get out of your hum-drum lifes reality and into some form of recreation you enjoy. This is a great hobby., some take it to differant levels., Some collect OLD firearms and are NOT re-enactors., others are re-enactors and cant afford a real pistol., others want to just flirt.,big deal., Cant people rise above it and enjoy your hobby and take that to whatever level you desire., and thats good enough . We all have differant levels of what we want from this.,what we expect., and what we are willing to put into it., and you know ., their are many that think what we do makes no sense at all., they just wanna pay their bills. We should all feel lucky we can afford to enjoy any of this even a little.,cause there are many less fortunate.

In terms of a sailor in general.,not pirates and in terms of sailors in whatever period an event happened some had working clothing and event clothing.,event perhaps being battle. A Spanish ship for example may have had a boat load of conquistadors crossing the Pacific., however its probably a good assumption to believe they were not wearing metal helmets and armor while sailing. When they landed however in Mactan they were dressed for battle.,armor.,tho it didnt help them very much in the battle against Lapu-Lapu. I bet they were too heavy and ackward to function very well in the surf as they landed. I know this period of Magellan is not GAoP but they dressed for that occasion.

I was always under the impression the Bucket boot was a "Riding Boot" for horse back. Spain for example brought many horses on thier ships. a small breed actually. But a pirate did not live on a ship every moment of his life. Surely he would dress accordingly for the occasion being barefoot climbing rigging., or beating thru the jungle outside of PortaBello with Morgan. Either adventure would warrant differant attire ? Most of my fun isnt on Lady Washington , that only comes once a year so for me its pretty much a land based event. Perhaps dressing for the occasion has something to do with it? Also most of the pictures of the boots in this thread are pulled up., into "Riding position" and can easily be folded down. (Note *This is the nasty part* Being a rooter service we sometimes wear thigh high rubber boots.,and fold them down at the knee----A rubber bucket boot)

After WE get "Inside The Bottle" ..,Then....., Everyone heave ho !!! :) I gotta find me a small Pewter Admiral about 1" tall to stand by the wheel., and maybe a few British Marines.

Cigars.,no. I thought I would take up the pipe tho...., once I am in retirement mode. Having quit smoking in favor of scuba diving however for me would be like opening a door I could not close. I smoked for 28 years. I dont think I could have the discipline to smoke every other once in a while. I admire those who can. For me I think I would become a heavy smoker again and just cant even take that chance. Tall Paul., I was checking the link to your website. Wow Cheers to ye mate. You and your group have definitely got it going on!

Thanks everybody., yea I am still a little shocked everytime I go into the living room. He saved the packaging for me and I am gonna need it to make sure it holds together for the shipping.,it'll go on the plane with me in April for the 28+ hours of travel time it takes to get to the PH. I am grateful for it., however setting it up in the scuba shop is still 3 years away for me. Gawd I cant wait to retire out. Its gonna be like a great big Pirate orientated christmas !!! Lotsa a toys I always wanted shipped an laying in wait ( . Oh on a side note.,I may be wrong correct me if I am. According to Dennis., this is a model of Victories state the day of the battle of trafalgar., which is to say the flag in WHITE bearing the RED-CROSS means "Admiral on-board" ?

Late last night after I returned home from work. A man and his wife were at my house visiting my wife. The same man that bought my 20" Napoleon and Red Oak carriage I built during my affordable make your own cannons cheap thread. After having bought the cannon and having alot of fun with it he decided to buy me a thank you gift for tropico's Scuba shop (It will go behind my desk I think on the wall). Needless to say I was shell-shocked. What can you say? I dont want it? You shouldnt have? Its to big? I just went with Oh my gawd ! Thank YOU ! ! ! I felt a bit speechless., which with my big mouth is saying nothing is saying alot. I am still gawking and trying to get over this. He (Dennis) Gawked at it with me for hours with beer and amazement . Ever piece is hardwood all little planks and lots of rigging cannons and I am still finding detail. I am thinking I better start making more people cannons.

Note: 1 key item to look for on a true GAOP gun of Queen Anne era . To tell a modern replica even up to a 150 year old good replica., more often than not has the trunnions set at 180 degrees apart. The real deal more often than not at that time in a casted gun., the trunnions were usually set below center. And so was a good doop off a real casting. Meaning you really could not flip the barrel over and drill the vent on the best looking side for the guns top. On my old english the trunnion is casted in during the pour clearly visable across the bottom of the barrel. There is a top and there is a bottom. On a machined gun., you can get better trunnion mounts at 180. To machine a doop and then machine a cross bore thru for a trunnion and then weld the trunnion into place and machine the bore again., wouldnt supply enough strength to the cannons trunnion to support the cannons weight under fire. This trunnion would really need to be casted in place. A fine example of this weight and need for a good solid casted trunnion mount would be to look at a Carronade. The Carronade being built in 1769 doesnt make it GAoP however it shows you a lowered trunnion on carriage mounted models. The Swivel slide mounted 32 and 68 pound models areof course something all together completely differant.

Well if your cuttin'er down from a 6-8 lb'er to a 4 pounder you can get one. Full scale British 4-pounderw/crown and cypher $11,400 .,3.2" Bore .,at 620lbs and 49 inches in length. This would be from Cannons LTD , in a bronze model. You can get that same barrel in a Class 30 Grey Iron for $4,399 at 550 lbs. This is why I bought my barrels from HERN Iron Works., the prices are much better at their foundry however they dont make the models we are talking about. Also I needed to fit a certain criteria., 1 weight., 2 shipping and 3rd length. You have to remember naval bronze has greatly changed over the years., getting one of the same metal would maybe be more because they would have to get a custommix for you . Todays Bronze for example 660 Bronze has alot of Copper 85% I believe along with Tin and a few other metals in the mix. Todays alloys are definitely superior metals. There are several differant Bronze alloys., To say regular bronze..,is leaving the door wide open to a bronze that could corrode easily., Some stainless will rust., Stainless 303.,304 and 316 are greatly differant. 316 being for marine use., and 303 for kitchen and restaurant., meaning 303 wont rust,.exposed to food and water and soaps., very durable and what a great cannon it would be., but submerged in saltwater it would fail, 316 is considered propellor shaft., and in the form of a cannon laying at the bottom., could be retrieved centuries later looking literally brand new. Depends on the legacy you want to leave I guess. Cannons are a great way to leave something your grand children will thank you for and fight over (Grinning). The beauty of it is you can have them etched with your logo (Deep) and there going to be around a LONG LONG TIME. Mine are 55" at 340 lbs for the barrel. After a total build ., they weigh out to about 750 lbs a gun., thats because I have steel wheels with precions cased bearing and zirk fittings for grease. As well as steel axels and axel trucks., and a 1/2" steel floor plate as to allow water to run off of them during sea spray and rain. My Carriages cheeks are Philippine Mahoganey and look great from the side but of course with close inspection youcan see they are a modernized interpretation. But I need to ensure I wont be building these again., with wooden floors and wheels in tropical heat and rain. I think it really depends on if money is no object., or if practical purposes and dollar for dollar counts as to what may be best to do. I wish i had the Kings money ! ! ! I compromise where I need to to get what I feel I want/ and what works. The new 4-pak for our boat is pretty close to a Queen Anne era in a sub scale model. I ' will post a few photos when they arrive as well as a blast video of one laying on the ground. before I ship them. They should have considerable more bang than my 1" bores I recently built..,but not quite what my 30" old English 1.75" bore does! and it is of GAoP style. Just its cast from 80% Stainless and 20% nickel....., It'll be around a long time..., I could see it being in someones hands a millenium from now if the world holds together. But I am but a humble plumber type pirate.

Privateering for the United States of America against any and all enemy's of the country with a letter of Marque guaranteeing me and my brethren a share in all we can take and a free hand to do it ? I think the best pirates would be Seal Team 1.,2.,3.,4., and 5 for amphibous assault., a few good marines., and some sea-bees for setting up our operation on an island you cant find (Unless you already know where it is) a boat load of Rangers and a Lockhead Martin Fast Cat with Helopad would indeed make fer a fine ship an crew in todays world. I do believe they would be the best pirates of all in todays world given a letter of Marque. Definitely the team I would like around me anyway.

Everytime I am Drinkin (At home on weekends) or out in someones field building them a drainfield for thier septic system., so I actually wear my doo-rag and tricorn quite a bit. I have worn it to Disney land., and the Gasparilla fest as well., and will be wearing it in April and part of May in the Philippines about town island to island as well as on the dive boats. Personally I wish more people would wear them back into popularity again!

Cannons LTD is worth checking out Thats a tough one., and ALOT of $$$$$ in a Bronze ., Also the closest thing I have found is a Full "1800" English Naval Gun or a Full scale 1776 British lt. 6-lb. made byCannons Online And there isSouth Bend Replicas These people will do about anything you want., and they have supplied several Museums., but its a down payment on a house.......,for one. Most of the cannons I have been able to find are Civil War and Pre Civil war to the late 1800s. There are people who will make what you want ., this is where I go., however for a full size 6-8 pounder your going to have to find a pretty big lathe., andhave it machined is my guess. To pour a bronze.,that big youll need a factory like HERN however they only pour Class 30 Iron., 8000lbs at a whack. and they are not set up for bronze. A GAoP Gun would probably have to be a custom from south bend. Some one would do it., no doubt., its just a matter of money. Personally the only thing I have in bronze is a Wold Imports S1.75 bore signal cannon., and a 660 Bronze Coehorn Mortar and I can tell you from recent experience 13" OF 4.5" BRONZE ROUND BAR IS OVER 350.00 ., OUCH. The Stainless on 4" is around 270.00 a foot. I cant say that it should be made of Bronze., I believe there were alot of Iron Cannons., the golden gun (Bronze) Culverines were an upgrade. The Dutch were pounding out iron cannons long before GAoP. Also the Spaniards were pumping out alot of Iron and Bronze Tigre's ., and many 1700 and 1800 Lantakas came out of asia for swivel mounted guns. 4 footers with small bores. About the only way I can really get what I want is thru some one like Wes. He can make a sub scale accurate anything from anything if you have access to the pattern. A Bronze cannon at say 1/2 scale in the Gun you are looking for may still be somewhere in the 7-8" breech diameter ., I believe he could dothat., but Bronze would be Alotta Copper an Tin. A good one for you to try may be West of England This company has built some HMS Victory 32 lb'ers.

After recieving a 660 naval bronze mortar from a fellow by the name of "Powder Keg" we were very impressed by his work. We decided the best approach for our Scuba vessel would be to get Wes (Powder Keg) to turn 4 new guns from 416 Stainless Steel for us. We hunted around a bit for a pattern we liked and for what we thought would allow us to ship as cheap as possible overseas., as well as bang for the buck. Also we thought about being exposed to salt water and chose marine grade Stainless. Working with Wes also allows us to modify whatever we want to the cannon. We decided to buff up the trunnions a bit add length as well so we can use thicker cheeks on our carriages (greater stability) . And since it is a smaller gun we will be increasing the muzzle a bit to sort of emphasize the bell shape. I will post pictures ASAP., probably in a month. Size and weight are a factor in overseas shipping prices. The particular gun pattern we chose will symetrically scale down to about 4" X 26" with a 1 1/2 bore. and over loading them shouldnt be a problem with Stainless.

Oh how true., Yes High Quality Wrong Boots is that what you mean to say? May as well spend the 400 to be worng., shoot I did. Its important Carter for you to be told your tastes are incorrect. Someone needs to tell you this. They just have too. Its not really important what you like., your just going to pay for them., Its US., see we might have to look at them one day. Be careful in choosing Carter., I have a pair of CABOOTS. They are my favorite boots. But I am way out of line and should be flamed or ignored. Its important to thrash people publicly and quickly on their first post before we even know who they are about things like this too. The boots are alot like a Kristi Smart frock., Any history buff will let you know they are in very bad taste., phony and not period. Very Hollywood. Remember I have a pair but my gear is garbage really and vampire fairy. Let us not forget to trash the owners of Caboots if Joey from Champion Attitude tries to log on as a new member the way Kristy got fried during her first post. (Yes that person WAS KRISTY WHO LOGGED IN) She thought she would try to become a member..., but the people here apparantly didnt even give her a chance. Then they continued to create new topics to make fun of her with more Ebay fun. I can go copy the quotes if you would all like to re-read them for more fun for your selves. Unlike many here she actually owns a production company desiging and earns a living and employes people., who sew for a living. I can imagine the coats she can make that are period if she wanted to or was asked to....., or was introduced to some ideas ..., But I guess it wont happen. I imagine she was very impressed with the welcome she recieved. Too bad to.,A woman like that who sells to such a large client base could infact help promote clothing I would think would benefit our hobby....perhaps even help popularize it a bit more. Everything helps really does if you enjoy the pirate the way I do. But Call me stupid too. I am prepared for it. I am sure its me., I am the hypocryte here., I know its me. I believe there was a thread a week or so ago about how to welcome new members. Perhaps we should continue to burn them ., that will certainly help the membership too. Too bad nobody really meant anything good by it. So be careful choosing. I am sure youll be O.K. Choosing wrong since you are known here already. After all many here are period correct as well except the boots., and thats o.k. because we know eachother and becasue boots are differant than a coat. Its just new people that need assault and Tune up . I am trying to take a long hard look at myself., I am sure people will not like my post killing it would probably be the first thing to enter into some peoples minds., but perhaps if some here get honest and take a look at their own behavior in an honest frame of mind., maybe something went wrong. To bad too.

Ahhhh., so many arguements and so little time...................., Hurricanes Post Well said I must agree. Pirate Petees Post I have to agree with this post. For me What is a Pirate Coat? Is there such an animal which represents time as a whole.., you have to consider what was the first pirate wearing?., and who was he?., He was the person who tried to take from the person who made the first thing that floated. So if I wear a robe and portrayed a time before Noah would that be accurate? and would people consider me a pirate? Piracy for me spans a whole lot more than the very narrow time frame of the GAoP. Even a Justaucorps is to new for the GAoP. I like the Justaucorps coat however its not GAoP. But many like the coat for "Pirate". The movie RobRoy was more in that GAoP time frame.,but I am not seeing people dressed as fancy as the swordsman., and personally I liked his coats ALOT. I would rather dress in his attire than that of a peasant. Then there is a matter of money and wealth., those coats were alot differant then peasant coats. Those coats also varied greatly from tailor to tailor and country to country. I am sure that the majority of paintings were more of nobility. Not many peasants were funding paintings for their own vanity., nor did they have the means to preserve them for future generations. Who knows what riches in the world have been lost this way. Many things I am sure are undocumented. I am from Spanish blood I have many photos of the paintings in Spains castles of their kings., the coats varied from England France The Dutch and middle eastern of the same period. So did their hats and yes they wore a cocked hat as well. Here is a favorite painting of mine (I like the coat) Ferdinand VI . Note the pockets are differant and so are other things compared to others vision of the same era. I am interested in fun more than anything else. For example my cannon collection at 11 now.,not including the 4 new Bronze barrels I just commisioned for our vessel (These are a matched set) are all of differant time frames., they were chosen due to weight ., shipping and resort placement., I had to do this according to my own budget. It would be much more dificult and expensive to try to stay to one exact time while commissioning machinists to build them. I find poeple who build certain cannons and then have them adusted to suit my needs. To answer this ., please take no offense. My learning of the words "Thread Counter" first became a phrase to me on this forum "The Pyracy Pub" as well as the term Period Nazi. Now with that said it means more than anything else to me ., An SCA event in which GAoP is far to new and futuristic to attend., and from them being flamed for even being at the event. Now do to an upsurge of pirate or if you will fantasy .,,Hollywood pirate interests., SCA is welcoming them more and more., probably due to economics., ie., the SCA sold itself to money . And the money helps popularize and build bigger and more event parks. Personally I am all for that., otherwise I would have no where to go. So is anyone on my arse about wearing the wrong thing., no. They cant be., Its a frame of mind., My frame of mind., I control me., no-one else controls me., therefore if I hear something like that directed at me., my first reaction is to simply tell them to "Blow" See we all have our own reasons for doing what we do.,so for someone .,for example myself to tell someone what time it is., simply is not my place. So when it happens to me., I consider it an intrusion on my being and I stop it right there from ruining my good time. I dont want to offend anyone., I will just shut down the intrusion into my space. Here is a fine example of 3 people at the Washington Ren faire with Kristi's coat with my wife and her cousin Annabelle. Notice the man in the Yellow shirt. He is 6'6" .,I am but a humble little pirate of 5'8" stature. I am not going to give him a hard time about his attire., I am not going to raze his krewe either. (Please note Champion Attitude boots worn by the man on the right) Just like mine. These guys had a lot of fun.,We enjoyed their company. I am not aware of this forum being the GAoP Board? I believe its "the pyracy pub" thats it. I have Foxes website bookmarked., I consider it one of the best on the web., I consider GoF's the same in quality and content., Also I do not know Ace personally but have his bookmarked as well., I find Ace to be an awesome characture. He deals with children as does the krewes he is associated with., Tales of the Seven Seas and the Royaliste. Ace is an excellant entertainer., and can sing.,walk a tight rope., perform magic tricks ride a unicycle., and many other things., I wish I had 1/2 his talent., I respect his ALOT. (Any man that can stand his own and take shots from the Lady Washington and still stand is definitely worth his salt) Cheers to ye Ace I just want to have a little fun before I die., thats what Tropico is about for me. There are no GAoP re-enactments that I am aware of., at least not in my nieghborhood. I have to build my own little world., so...., infact I am. On the Far side of the world in fact. Its about 9"24.12N and 123"14.06 E There people who want to scuba dive in tropical waters and chase the whale shark., fire cannons., and play anykind of pirate they want to can come and have a little fun. No Rules other than being legally correct and polite to others. So we gotta play what we can where we can .,when we can., closest thing that I am aware of would be St.Augustine Florida. If I were to get into something for exacting accuracy., I would have to move. I would gear up and take orders from a Rev-War group., after all its nice to be on the winning team. Its about the closest thing I can find to what I like., I dont even know if there is a re-enactment for the French Indian Wars., if so I would like that even better., but for one weekend a year I wouldnt trade my dreams and goals for anything in the world.
-
Agreed Ace.,I have that same coat only Kristi did a custom for me and made the sleeves from elbow down to cuff bigger., and added some large cuffs to it., as well as brass buttons. We copied the cuff pattern from that of the swordsman at the end of RobRoy. I Like the coat alot and with lots of other items to go with it., a shirt.,a tricorn (non historically correct leather Tricorn ) and my boots (non historically correct Champion Attitude Swashbuckler Boots) most of the woman find it a dashing outfit and ask to get a photo at the faires. I like that. Only the thread counters will be on your arse about it. I for one do it for me., not for thread counters. I have fun and dont care. I dont play well with thee other children and am not popular with them. tsk.,tsk., I therefore do not play in their world I play in mine. piratescave .,if you want that coat., you get it. You're welcome to wear it around me anytime.

I must confess I never made it to Y'bor City Hurricane.,too tired and to unfamiliar with my surroundings.,My first time to Tampa., Wow Florida is beautiful tho.,AWESOME really. I did take the wife to dinner and cocktails however after the Parade.,but all of the downtown was cordoned off for about a 3 mile perimeter.,and I could not walk. The Parade was great. I have to confess however my going to Tampi from Washington was mainly for an alterior motive. Dr.Grey is the worlds foremost authority on Vasectomy reversal..,over 500 a year and a 95% positive proven track record. He is amazing. The wife and I are hopefully that we will be able to create a monster of our own in 2007.

No update yet on the hand cannon. The caster wants too much really to rplicate it for resale. My personal one has only a 1/4" bore still I have not bumped it up to the .50 caliber it should be as of yet. Gasparilla was awesome., we took about 300 photos. I always resented the fact that Florida gets hit by hurricanes and FEMA pays alot of the bill ., which is me and everyone else. I dont feel that way anymore..,I have seen about 25 states now and Florida is by far the most beautiful and I now understand why people want to live there no matter what. Florida is AWESOME. However I did come home with a bad limp and am still recovering.

I had to choose " There are too many "The Ones" to choose from!" Because there are alot of people out there (Too many to choose from) too many wrong ONES that people choose for the WRONG reasons. But I believe there is someone with whom I can be happy and provide some degree of happiness for them . Making a life worth living is really the first part of being really content anyway. Do Well For Yourself., And Everything Else Good is Bound To Follow I could be with my probable soul mate and still have a crappy life if my job.,income.,weight., ect.,ect., sucked well then I couldnt really be happy no matter who I was with could I ? I think it all begins with YOU then from there once you have acheived a sence of self esteem and personal happiness you could then with a more clear head.,find another like minded individual .,probably resulting in a more satisfactory and content marriage. MercenaryWench You are wise beyond your years. Stay single a while.,take your time and choose wisely.,I could not have said what you said as well as you said it, but you said exactly what I wanted to say. Did I say that right ? There I said it

Thanks Hurricane Actually I'd really like to meet your krewe I am unfamiliar with port richie and how far from Tampa it may be., I will studying a chart tonight I take it Gaspars Grotto is in the downtown area?

Well if you are after a custom coin., thats a bit more spendy . Good advertisement and can be good for a soda or what have you. These people do alot for Mardi-Gras Krewes.

Anyone going to this event? I'll be arrivi'n January Friday the 27'th with thu Misses We been lookin forward to it a long time. I gotta see it once before I make my move to the far side o the world. Gasparilla Pirate Fest
