Hey some good stuff goin on here! Johnny Cash - great! Most Haunted - love that show. Derek Acorah has a new show out too - Ghost Towns. I'm listening to Loreena McKennitt, Hesperus and Vivaldi. Yesterday was Sinatra and Chet Baker all day. God I love music.

Count me in on the dork list...sounds like fun to me!

Perhaps it was intended for someone else? Maybe he came into it somehow and never unloaded it before he died. Are there any known regions or towns named Tennis (or variant spelling)? Or perhaps it was a brand-name Tailor?

Being an artist he may have been trying to show how "ironically uncool" was, or how non-conformist he was, or perhaps it was simply what he liked. Regardless, he's definitely showing it off - it's darn near the focal point. The clothes definitely are not 1670s...is the earring? Who knows. He has another self-portrait from 1679 in contemporary clothing, but his wig covers his ears, so we'll never know for sure.

I'm not remotely qualified to respond to that one, sorry Foxe.

Good observation Kass. He was a student of painters who studied with Rembrandt...and this outfit does look a bit like that...perhaps it's an homage... This is the whole portrait, so you'll have to go just on this. It's part of a set, the other painting being a portrait of his wife.

This is a self portrait by the artist Godfried Schalcken (1643-1706), painted circa 1670. Clearly not a sailor, and it's a bit prior to the GAOP, but it does show the ol' gold hoop earring worn for fashion's sake...I throw it out there for those who are seeking alternative controversial debates to the Boots. Enjoy! :)

That is classic, you made my day GOF! How hot would a Weber have to get to melt earrings?
-
Well this site I found had MANY scans of circa 1750-1760 cartoons concerning the Scottish "Jackboots" & the Jacobite rebellion....as well as many cartoons using boots as political metaphors....I'll see if I can find the link again, it was obscure and I forgot to bookmark it.

I had to do the same thing suddenly & unexpectedly last year Mad Jack...my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your wife.

Did some boot diggin' last night just for kicks, found some rather interesting stuff : First up a playing card dated 1754: Here's a fun one of a Dutch dude dated...1720...sporting some posh softies: Granted they are not sailors, but they aren't riding....though I think that Dutch caricature guy is sporting a spur. Just some Devil's Advocate food for thought. And lastly, some good natured fun for all ye boot lovers out there: :)

Could be, if enough research was done. But merely sharing a last name doesn't prove much in the way of genealogy...we'd need to know more about that Tea-Party grandfather's great-grandparents.
-
A-Ha! I knew he didn't have a commission for at least part of his exploits...privateer my arse.
-
I could be wrong, but I thought Drake didn't actually carry a commission the first time around?

I always enjoy looking at that picture, Foxe. Looks like a damn good time and what I wouldn't give to be in a chair listening to their conversation!

If you wore that STELLAR green riding outfit fromlast year's Pirate Feast you'd no doubt show up even the queen at the Faire. What a scandal it would be!

I believe the correct pre-Grog term is simply "punch", right?

Sure Kass, just ignore your celestial brother! It's ok! Hey Fort Mifflin is WICKED COOL. We went to the reenactment last year - very nicely done and the PA Navy group was impressive. Met a great chap there named Del who does a sea chanty group out of NJ called the Sea Dogs. I sang with them awhile but had to move away before I could do some real gigs with them. Been to the PA faire tons of times...you'll have fun there Kass! They've recently added "Swashbucklers Grove"...the highlight of which is their own on-site brewery featuring pirate themed beer. It's a GOOD TIME! Granted there are tape-on boot-top falsies everywhere, and traveling bands of Middle-Earth mercenaries in black denim dusters with Kill Bill swords strapped to their backs, but last year I did see one amazing, 100% period correct buccaneer complete with a nice fusil, the apostles, GOOD sensible period shoes and everything!

Either, so long as it's 9 days old.

Kass you know I'm an East Coast boy! :) Whether it's Florida, Maryland, Philly or Maine. And all points in between. I'm a nomad. Das, I just can't see a pair of boots lasting that long. Footwear (especially then) was put thru such rigorous usage without cars to get around in. Unless you could afford a carriage or a horse, you walked. Ah Hogarth! I knew sooner or later he'd show up in this thread! One of my all time favorite artists, and man truly ahead of his time!

Ech all those Capt Morgan drinks are basically sugar syrup with a splash of rum added....you want a real rum that tastes like RUM and not coconuts or cotton candy, go with Mt. Gay Estate, Goslings Black Seal, Meyer's or Wood's. They don't cost any more than a Morgan product and are ten times as good!

I've wondered that too. Maybe the booze was lighter in alcohol % back then?
-
*smacks self in head* Sorry! Course we could discuss the "red top boots" of the Black Ball Line....
-
Blow The Man Down is a mid 19th century shantey. I could be wrong but I think it originated on the famous Black Ball Line.

Bo I love your tag. Awesome! As to yesterday....Ky-Mani Marley fan by any chance?
