OMG Das I'm laughing so hard it hurts....

I'm with ya HM...I would LOVE to tour the Tower. And the National Maritime Museum. And I'd love to spend a season in the National Archives.
-
Yep, that's us...that noisy room full of rowdy 14 year olds disrupting the meeting!
-
Petee, you ARE the man. Kinda makes ya wonder how boring life must have been for us before Google, eh? So many things we missed out on!

yep, I've been on receiving end of this, pretty harshly at times. For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to attend a portion of my college years in Savannah, Georgia. All was fine until the professor in my Southern History class found out me and my friend were from North of Boston...he almost went thru the roof with a tirade of Blackbeardian proportions!! I mean openly insulting us and berating us for daring to befoul his beloved city with our presence. It was NUTS! We just had to laugh as we walked out of the class loudly reminding him of our Northern prowess. I still feel bad about that....kinda...but HE started it! Btw Ciaran, it does my heart good to see another Loreena Mckennitt fan. She's one of my all time faves. Apologies for the digression. ...

Yeah go Yankees! As a born & raised true New England yankee I've always had a fondness for that word and it's heritage. Much better than "Flatlander".
-
LOL I always wondered HOW the heck they "proved" that, Foxe. I sure hope it's Tew's though, for Pat Croce's sake...he's the guy that paid a small fortune for it.

I'd think that the "6 old handchercher" would be more likely to be worn around the head than a neckcloth...those neckcloths seem a little thin and spare to do much good on the head. But I suppose that they would make decent "Rambo" style headbands....

LOL I'd say 1964. :)

Yes, you're probably right - his footwear went into the deep with him. Which means they could not have been very valuable, or there was someone on board who would have ratted to his family had someone tried to bury him barefoot.

The origins of savvy are French, and MUCH later than Jack Sparrow. I believe it's a late 18th or even 19th C. word. But it sounds cool when he says it, so who cares, right? That Sideshow Collectibles Blackbeard has festooned my desk at work for a couple years now, always got lots of good comments on it.

Here's another half-baked thought: The famous illustrators of the Brandywine school used to keep their studios FULL of old clothes, stage props, costumes, etc. I seem to recall reading that Wyeth for instance had many original 18th century articles of clothing from the Revolution era, probably all family hand-me-downs. These "props" turned up in many of the paintings. I wonder if the Rembrandts and Vermeers of their era kept closets full of old hand-me-down clothes to use merely as attractive drapery for models, because it "looked cool" and not for any higher purpose or intent.

Arrmen to that, aye!!

I would be hard pressed to choose between Vermeer and Rembrandt. Though Durer may be my all time favorite.

That was my thought - calabash. Dampier mentioned them frequently so I'd guess that what it is.

Queen's B-Day is the best! It's so Python.

Kass, when I said homage to Rembrandt, this is kind of what I was thinking: Still can't believe I'm posting about Rembrandt HERE

And yet the ILLUSTRATIONS are rife with the very cliches the TEXT seeks to deny. I've seen this countless times in my collection of "current mainstream" pirate books. Which I guess would be the fault of the editor for not taking the time to find a good pairing of writer and artist. It's the same problem with this upcoming National Geographic special on Blackbeard. Overall it looks WICKED good and I'm royally psyched for it, but in the behind-the-scenes video on the site they stress how no effort was spared in the quest for diligently and ACCURATELY recreating the world of Blackbeard. I mean they go on and on trying to sell us on how "right" they got it, yet straight away we see Blackbeard step out of his cabin in shiny bucket boots, and his various men are festooned with earrings, headscarves, etc. It's clear they spent SO much time and hard work on building incredible replicas of the sloop & other ships, and the sets in Nassau and Bath...but when it comes to the costuming it's as if they deferred to Don Maitz as the authority. (Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan).

Nice, Green. I'm surprised at the amount of neckcloths...9 in all. What's a Sea Gowne? Foul weather gear? And a calbush? Can't find a definition anywhere. Funny that they make the distinction between just "4 shirts" followed by the two blue shirts and pair of drawers... And a "coat & briches" vs. the "cloth sute". Thanks Foxe, this is good stuff.

I love meeting other people that get it.

We used to celebrate Benito Juarez day at work...I think it's in April? From time to time we'd just pick random obscure holidays printed on the calander and give them the works!

Need Pirates for Feature Film!

Wow that makes at least 4 of us here that are Graphic Designers! Next step is figuring out the correlation between that and piracy. -
Green, that's hysterical...I love it! Ooo! Don't forget Robocop! Nasty hand violence in the beginning of that one...he won't even need to watch the whole thing!
