  1. big ed's a-watchin and smilin mate. well done!
  2. i'm a bit confused over the above quote from mr. laverys book. Having not read his book, nor knowing his sources i'd have to question it. if the above is true then why a variety of sloops during the GAoP.. we need to define the design differences (not construction locations) between the following colonial era ships, which all shared common waters at the same time. a bermuda sloop, a jamaican sloop, and a virginia sloop. then, might we be able to find actual primary source references to their frequency in various ports?
  3. the braveheart group were a celt group of some fasion at war with the romans across the way from them. they are normally a viking group but decided to switch out this year. the WW1 group are a ball. their neighbors are the doughnut dollies and often win the reenactors choice award.
  4. WAIT WAIT WAIT! there seems to be a problem with the side bar math. Says she's 48- she's 25 again!
  5. aye, the comments heard in my corner were grand! Jamestown staff would walk by and ask each other when they got the new building. Reenactors came in from the complete opposite end of the park because they were told they had to see what the "crazy #!$(@%$" down by the fort had done. Others would walk by and just stare then say " why did we even come, who brings an entire building to events". It was great watching people gears turn as we explained how we had pulled off one aspect or another and figuring how they could add to their own presentations.
  6. Tis that time of year again. My beloved Madam Grace has made it for another trip around the sun (her 25th again says she!) Now if we can just get her to remember her password and start posting. She was on the pub so long ago most of us here didnt even know it existed yet!
  7. I found this passage in the following document; http://www.asdk12.or...E%20PASSAGE.pdf Dr. Claxton’s ship, the Young Hero, was one of those delayed for weeks before reaching the trade winds. “We were so streightened for provisions,” he testified, “that if we had been ten more days at sea, we must either have eaten the slaves that died, or have made the living slaves walk the plank,” a term, he explained, that was widely used by Guinea captains. The condensed version: slaver in 1780's was becalmed and the captain/owner? Dr. Claxton makes reference to sending slaves to walk the plank. I've searched for the entire document of his journals (or maybe a court proceeding since "he testified") and they don't seem to be on line. has anyone ever run across the journal in its entirety? While it certainly does not prove that pirates made prisoners walk the plank, this would indicate it was, and had been, done for quite a while. I wonder if there is a description or explination of exactly what walking the plank entailed in the journal?

  9. tickets will be available soon. i can only recall the ball selling out once and that was a low estimate of attendees by the sponsor- we tried to tell them though.........
  10. i have an old suit of sails i'll send him. if we are going to upset the apple cart lets do it right.
  11. I'm just as giddy as can be. The budget is good to go for what we need.... give or take a bit...... A major addition to the Foundation will be present this year so stand by for a HUGE announcement over the next two weeks!
  12. ahoy hawkyns, unfortunately this years budget has already been submitted for visiting crews. The city insurance for this event does not allow spectators to play with gunpowder and unfortunately anyone who is not under contract is considered a spectator. Now, on the other side of the coin.... we do have a couple of period vendors spots we are looking to fill. Visit the festival site, download the vendors application and mail it in. As yours will be a new application you will be asked to send pictures and a list of goods you sell. Disregard it. We have seen your- hell, we have bought your goodies- you are fine. PM coming to you as well
  13. new ventures and projects on the horizon for the foundation. stand-by!

  14. ahoy thighbighter, can ye give me or grace a jingle. we need a favor regarding the guns of hampton.
  15. ok, well we are still waiting on our budget to finish on the chopping block. In the meantime betty, from the williamsburg wigmakers, has signed on board with her ladies. Gentlemen, bring your purses! Foppish hair pieces are to be had for reasonable prices! A new twist has happened on the boat front. The shallop Explorer will be returning this year. The Deltaville museum will be manning her this year. There may be a new vessel on the water as well................................................... Powder for battery point is en-route. more to follow............
  16. ahoy mr. smythe, thank you for asking about peace tying and weapon safety. the city does not require visitors to peace tie weapons, but scabbards are highly encouraged and we prefer blunted tips and edges if no scabbard. Festival crew pirates ARE required to have all edged weapons in a scabbard, blunted and inspected upon check in. The festival follows a script so no ad hock or pick up fights are permitted. The only past incidents we have had were swords sticking out like tails behind a pirate- perfect eye level to wee ones. the carrier was asked to reposition the offending sword- No biggie.
  17. OK. the first tall ship contract has been confirmed- welcome Pride of Baltimore! edit* TWO new guns will be joining battery park!
  18. ahoy all- just a quick update on the festival. Two tall ships from op-sail will be joining the fleet this year. From what I understand the contracts are both on East Coast Ships which have not been to the festival before. The re-enactors and ships contracts have been submitted and being worked over. All of our regular groups have signed back on and we anticipate approval on one new unit. Grace reports that two new period vendors have requested space. One will be an anchor vendor over by the air and space center. The second is a local and will add flare to the camp. I'm in charge of the camp and re-enactors and have requested a larger camp footprint. We anticipate having the largest number of re-enactors yet this year! If things go well, the Foundation will have a work in progress over the festival and opsail weekend. Running a safe and family friendly event remains at the top of the committees concerns. Our man in blue is working on our various permits. A friendly reminder that random firing of weapons, brandishing weapons (including sharp pointy things)and open alcohol containers outside of licensed venues may place visitors at risk of city provided lodging as well as an embarrassing ride across town in a police golf cart. If anyone has any questions please don't hesitate to chime in!
  19. tis a grand day! got a phone call to swing by a movie set and scrounge. . . . . grand day to be a pirate!

  20. thanks gang. found the info i needed. hook, thats a wild find. i knew about the sunken chains and barrels, but had no idea about those critters. wow!
  21. does anyone know what the wooden barricades seen around various historical sites are called. im referring to the wooden trunks on their sides with poles crossing through them.
  22. aye jenny, cant let the cat out yet but i did talk to them last week and the schedule is being cleared. as a side i talked to betty as well and gave her a hand full of drawings. she is seriously considering doing some GAOP pieces. She did her first one last year at fort fred. Tis the one I use for Mr. Fitz-Williams, the custom agent which is in last years festival thread. battery park has continued to grow. so much that it is a bit unwieldy on the point so the extra room will indeed be nice. now if we can just get lawrence to ..... oh never mind. james- would love to make the acquaintanceship.
