last nights project- a new harness for a ditty bag as the dog ate my old bag. seriously, whole damnded bag! anyhow- handle is wrapped with coxwaining, into a matthew walker, six strand round sennet, star knot, then a turks head for a slider. the book is a new one i found at wooden boat- lots of good info on tools and techniques rather than the knots. it also goes into sewing stitches. good book. edit- ok pic was done before the coxwaining and the star is a bit loose. i didnt have any tools to tighten it down at the time- looks better now.

its a good idea to get this one cleared up early as it could have you spending time explaining yourself to local constables. I have not heard of a pirate reenactor being arrested, but there have been lots of close calls and irritated officials over it. if you are doing pub crawls and there seems to be a grey area go with the old rule of "when in doubt- leave it out" as in locked away someplace safe. ok let the flames begin-

ahoy friends, well the great pepsi experience is now a thing of the past. we held our own ending up 33rd out of 160 program entries. it didn't net us the $50,000.00 prize but we all sure gave it a go! THANK YOU ALL from our hearts!

so i have ended up with a small barrel/rumlett/what ever you want to call it. It is made of oak and certainly designed to hold liquids. so here is my dilema. I really want to give it a good internal cleaning, reseal it, then use it for water. We have beat the sealing it horse to death, so i'll save us that agony. What concerns me is cleaning it out. It looks like wine was in it at one time as there are red stains around the plug. What is the best way to clean this critter out to make it food grade safe and are there any hidden dangers that anyone can think of? I'm thinking dtergent, bleach, rinse.

latchets will work too. shoes with ribbons done from a single lace- not laced up like modern shoes. i found a $4.00 pair of rockports i turned into latchets and unless im doing a fancy thing- thats my most common shoe.

head down to the sewing room threads. you will find lots of information. before you get your heart set on any one thing, take a while and digest what you are looking at and as mission, hook, and others have said- don't be afraid to ask questions. thats why we are all here. shoes will probably be the most expensive item you start out with. if you are handy with needle and leather you can find suitable modern shoes that can be tweeked with a bit of work at a thrift store for just a few dollars. actually- a lot of goodies can be found at thrisft stores and yard sales that can be converted to suit your needs.

i found it in sharps trafalger and thats exactly what it was used for when not being used my the master at arms for small gun tools

ahoy matty, as this thread has headed the way of pine tar- would it be ok to merge these topics? I'd like to keep them together as a pine tar guide as this topic frquently comes around.

i've heard of and seen the ladys ladder, but have no idea when it came to be. ratlins were way too close on the shrouds. when i went aloft i ended up skipping every other set but it was nice getting onto the yards with them set like that

when i did the nelsons navy diet experiment a few years ago (incidentally, i would not recommend trying it as our modern bellies are too soft) i found reconstituted with the peas and a bit of beef left from the day before with a bit of butter was a good meal. i also liked them soaked in water with a drizzle of molasses over them.

not it mate, you want CH3-C6H9(OH)-C3H4. kidding no idea of the chemical formula. Without looking specifically at Matty Bottle's bottle of hoof goo, I would venture to say from past events with pine tar- the difference in smell is vitamins added to the horse stuff to make it FDA'able. I have also found the horse goo to be thinned to absorb into the cracks of the hoof. It has also been modified in its manufacturing to be less caustic if ingested by an animal. true pine tar will kill ya. edit* both are true pine tars- the mariners pine tar will kill ya quicker than the horse stuff though. after all the horse stuff is vitamin fortified. in short, both tars will proof your gear but if you are going to be aboard ship use the stockholm.

So I'm looking at plans of a 3rd rate ship of 74 guns- Nelson era and have run across a room I'm not familiar with. Just above the keelson, forward of the rudder is a small room called a lady's hole. it fills the angled void between the rudder deadwood and the next room forward, which in this case is a bread room. So essentially there is no floor and a hatch is showing to enter from the gun room floor above it. Any ideas what its use is?

WHEN we win, tis rides for all! thats part of why we are doing this. for reenactors- by reenactors to as many events as we can get to. i hear ya on the pepsi- however we are finding many uses for it. did you know it will clean stains off concrete!
