There are, of course, exceptions to every annoyance.

People who, during a telephone conversation, ask you to hold while they see who else is calling. I'm not talking about a professional setting here, as might occur with a receptionist, but whilst talking to my so called friends. Scenario 1: Them: Oh! I've got another call. Do you mind if I put you on hold? Me: Do you mind if I hang up? Scenario 2: Them: Hold on! I've got another call. <click> Me: Hangs up.

Please, allow me then to offer the following link for the interim. Not Elizabethan, but from 1736. The London and Country Brewer

What sort of loads do you use when shooting blanks? Same as had you loaded ball? More? Less? For shooting round ball, I've been considering working up a 3f load for the musket, just to see if there's any noticeable difference in ignition and/or accuracy from the 2f load. I've primed the musket with 3f, but find the 4f noticeably faster. With the pistol, I usually just use the 3f in the barrel and the pan for the aforementioned convenience.

Really now! Who, today, takes from both the large company and small person alike? Whose profit is always at another's expense? Who uses specialized tactics to their own device? Who share superficial camaraderie but turn on one another at a profit's motive? Who can never return to "normal" society? And, Who is vilified and despised by noble and pauper alike? Am I the only one who understands that today's equivalent to pyrates of old are lawyers!?!?

Black Powder only, accept no substitutes! I use Goex, mainly because it's easily available; would not be averse to trying Swiss or other brands were they to be had readily. I use 3f in the pistol and 2f in the musket; 4f for priming. Be sure to use a load appropriate for your gun.

Other than accidental ignition, the only enemy to powder is moisture. If your horn has a well fitting plug, the powder will keep pretty much forever. >>>> Cascabel Good to know! Thanks Cascabel!

Do you mean with Europeans, or are you looking for accounts of bad eggs amongst the American aboriginals?
-
I have to but wonder if this doesn't cut both ways? Who says Dampier's Moskito guides were interested in joining a European crew? I recall him writing of them having autonomy, especially when hunting fish - which they would not do with Europeans (ostensibly because they would upset the canoe).

Time for a big, wet, uncovered sneeze!

It's always been my opinion that the same rules of the road we use when operating a motor vehicle apply to shopping carts: stay to the right, etc. Instead, it seems the rules of bumper cars are the law of the land!

Present! What? This isn't roll call for Petty Annoyances?

I usually shoot paper cartridges, but sometimes PRB too. For those times, I have a powder horn, but it can be a few weeks between shoots. So, I'm wondering what disadvantages there may be to keeping powder in the horn?

Growing up, we had a cat - lots of them actually. The one in this story was named Peggy Sue. Until, that is, she ate my mother's prized fern. From that time on she was known as That Putrid Cat, or simply Putrid, for short.

I have been told, but have not been able to personally verify, that this movie is somewhat "unfinished"; that it was supposed to continue past it's current ending, but was never completed. Can anyone shed further light on this?

My hat's off to you MadL! Thank you most kindly for the extensive and comprehensive answer! This should be made a sticky for future reference for all!

All encouragement to ye lad! It's an adventure ye'll nay regret!

This stuff is great! You've got me inspired. What do I need and where do I go to get started? I've got the usual ball of hemp twine about. Does that work, or do I need something fancier? Hooks, needles, prickers (what the heck is a pricker anyway?)?

Great film that few folk seem to have seen! Another favorite of mine, though much, much darker - not for kids - and not so much pyrate as period is The Libertine. It's based on the life of John Wilmot, Second Earl of Rochester.

If you plan on using one gun for all of the above, I'd go smoothbore. If'n you take turkeys with a rifle, you need no advice from me!

Hmm, well, now that there's shared interest, let us elucidate: The nut is Areca Catechu, the leaves of Piper Betle. The are commonly used together, along with lime (the mineral, not the fruit), and more recently tobacco. Areca nuts can sometimes be found in certain Asian grocers, labeled Palm Nuts, in the frozen section. The fresh betel leaves are sometimes in the produce section. The dried leaves are not recommended.

Sorry not to have thought to include a link. I'm sure had it been visible the title of the thread would have given itself away.
