Greetings ya scurvy lot, Not sure if this goes in this topic section but, it doesn't really fit into the other topics either. Due to circumstances, two of my crew have had to resign their positions within the reencatment/stage show group (ren faire) that I own/manage and captain. As such, I am needing to fill those slots before our season begins in March. Those who are interested should send me an e-mail and I invite those interested parties to check out the website for the group (the addy can be found in my "profile" for Pyracy Pub). Please put in the subject line "TLotSK: Open Auditions" as I do not open email from unknown addresses. *Business disclaimer* Serious inquiries only, please. Thank you /End Business Disclaimer Thanking you in advance for your interest and wishing all the best of the holiday season With Respects, Captain Emerald Shaunassey

Cap'n Roberts, I also meant nay offense when I did respond to yer post. I know that if people do nay work at a Ren Faire as cast or crew that there tends to be a lot o' confusion about what we *really* do and the classes that we really do take in order to fill our contracts and get paid. I agree with ya about the characters/people who are downright rude when their characters are nay billed as such; for example, there be a gent in the mid-west that works the lanes and he tis called "Rufus the Rude" though mayhaps most of the patrons do nay know his name as he tis nay listed in their "wanted poster" that they recieve at front gate. When ya do encounter one o' those nasty ones, tis best to just ignore them. For e'n though they be showing their arses, their interaction will flop badly if'n ya just turn and walk away without acknowledging them. Aye, I ken, tis often harder to do so. Hopefully there be nay to many rude arses out there for people to encounter. If'n ya do, remember that that person tis nay the only actor at the faire ... seek out the one who be having a grand time for that tis the one who shall be able to lift yer spirits and brighten your day. Cap'n Roberts, Being as I am one o' those "Faire Folk" I must speak up in friendly defense of the events at which I have been on cast (and thus put through the Academy classes that are mandatory requirements for the play time). Each actor/actress is taught to turn off the "mundane" side and to turn on the "Character" side. Thus, Jane Doe might be your kids teacher but at faire she becomes "Lady Grace Parker" and thus, Lady Parker would not know you nor your kids. It's not that Jane's being rude or giving anyone the cold shoulder; she's just doing what she's been taught to do ... "Become the character" and make that character real rather than a character on a stage out of the audience's reach. Faire for the most part (there are exceptions as we all know), attempts to teach history and divest in the patrons the love of history or at the least, an interest great enough for them to go home and research the time period/characters. It is not meant to be 100% anything (unless it is the rare event that is billed as such). The majority of the Faires I have worked have striven for what we on the Circuit term "Historical Believeability". But, I digress from your point, please do forgive me. So, it's not that your friend/family/co-workers are trying to ignore you or being "stupid" by not acknowledging you while they are "In Character" it is simply they are being true to the person they are portraying. After all, Queen Elizabeth or King Henry VIII would not know you, would they? (And btw, there are classes taught on how to maintain your character in the face of friends/family/co-workers or the occasional rude patron that delights in popping you outta character). I hope this helps you to understand we Rennies more and why we do the things we do during a faire day. With Respects, Cap'n Emerald

Need to be stichin me up a new coat
Captain Emerald Shaunassey replied to CaptJackSparrow's topic in Scuttlebutt
Jack, et all, Was recently informed by a costumer friend of mine that she uses buckrum in place of interfacing and/or extra layers of material for lapels and cuffs. Have yet to try that out but, have thought to try it out on the coat I'm going to be making here in the next few weeks. Buckrum works well for hat brims as well as the "crowns" of French Hoods so, I don't see why it wouldn't work for lapels and cuffs. Keep in mind Jack, you could easily dye the linen to the desired shade with either commercial dyes (such as Rit) or by making your own dye (i.e., coffee and tea dyes, etc). Just my twain bits ... hope it aids any and all in some form or fashion. With Respects, Cap'n Emerald -

Cap'n Flint, Sad to say, my on hand references for Grace are very thin being, the book "Under the Black Flag" by David Cordingly. The information I have gleaned on her have come from Internet searches; most especially sites hosted by various branches of the Irish Government and History commisions. Hope this aids you in your research! Captain Emerald

Being a fan of the JR's, I love their music. "Pirate Gold" is a wonderful album but, their new one "X Marks the Spot" is outstanding. Well worth the gold to purchase it, in my opinion. Captain Emerald

There was also Alwilda in the 5th Century and Grace O'Malley (1530-1603). Alwilda took to the seas to escape an arrainged marriage and ended up marrying the bloke after he was sent out to "bring in the pirates" and found Alwilda, the pirate captain. Grace O'Malley, famous for her many fights with the local chieftains, merchant ships, etc. She would eventually meet Queen Elizabeth I in 1593 at Greenwich Palace. Other women of the sea (pirates and sailors): Mary Anne Talbot (late 18th C), Hannah Snell (mid 18th C), Mary Anne Arnold and Marianne Rebecca Johnson (From the book "Under the Black Flag" by David Cordingly) Captain Emerald

I am a five year vet of the ren faire circuit and consider myself to be both a reenactor and a rennie. Being land locked (Oklahoma) severely limits tall ship availability and the fact that lack funds for a tallship of my own (and a place deep enough to keep it), I'm pretty much left with only Renaissance Faires to perform/act at. That being said, I also go for "instant recognition" of a sea farer, though I lack peg leg, eye patch and parrot on my shoulder. I tend to be a costume/historical "nazi", much to the annoyance of the ladies within the reenactment group I own and manage. The differences are that we are an all female crew, we portray Privateers from the Tudor - Early Elizabethan Eras rather than the "Golden Age of Piracy" and we are improv actresses that have been turned loose to entertain the masses on a stage as well as "in the lanes". We also give away booty rather than taking it and turn the patrons into Privateers at the end of our stage show, replete with their own Letter of Marque. There are only two recorded female pirates in the history preceeding and following us for us to draw upon and still maintain our sense of history and "historical believability". The first in the 5th century: Princess Alwilda, daughter of the Gothic king, Synardus and the second in mid 16th - very early 17th centuries: Grace "Granuaille" O'Malley (1530 - 1603). As far as our clothing, it is ambigious enough to pass from Tudor through Elizabethan; allowing us to perform at festivals and such regardless of the "time period" of the event and without having to drop a huge sum of money for each different event (to cut cost, we also make our own garb). We do wear the fox tails (mostly for conversation pieces and to give just a tiny bit of history), hats that are all pre-GAoP (my hat was once a tricorn but since they have not come into fashion in the time period I "play in", I reshaped it to vaguely resemble a cavalier hat) and while our daggers and swords are live steel, they are used for "props" until such a time as I can get all the ladies trained to actually use them. Those of us who carry guns have opted to use museum replicas that allow us to "fire them off" without being a liability at an event with shot and powder. Our footwear, that is the one place where in we do "fudge" and lean more towards the GAoP styles. But, they are rugged enough to stand up to 16 + hours a day on our feet (without hobbling back to camp) and last for a long time. At the events where we camp, everything must be of the period or "period-esque" (down to the foods that are cooked during the "patron hours" of the events). The biggest obstacle with both strict reenactments and faires is the money required to invest in your "hobby". Hope this helps any who are curious. Respects, Captain Emerald

Ahoy Redd, Like Morick Towain, I'm stuck in the middle of the country, Oklahoma to be precise but, am willing to aid ya. I'm one of those amateur actresses, minor stage stuff back in school and several years as an improv actress on ren faire circuit. Let me know if'n I can assist ya in your endevors in any way. Respects, Captain Emerald

Some were victims, true enough. Victims of birth, devastation of all sorts, etc. Others however, must have been the ancestors of today's Pirates & Corporate Raiders, Sir Frances Drake comes to mind off hand. I sympathize with those who were forced into piracy to make a life for themselves but, can not for Drake and his ilk. Captain Emerald

I'd love to go but, doubt I will for two reasons 1) that's the time of year when m' and the girls start gearing up for the year on the Ren Faire circuit and 2) not enough funds for both Gasparilla and the regular run on the circuit. Maybe one of these years. Captain Emerald

Li'l Pirate lost fingertips, sending treasure
Captain Emerald Shaunassey replied to Saber's topic in Scuttlebutt
Some ideas here, they may work and they may not. (Forgive me if some of these have already been posted) 1) Mardi Gras beads of varying color to add to the treasure box. These can be made out of the strands of Christmas bead garlands. 2) A "Letter of Marque" granting him certain "rights & privileges" (perhaps his mom could help fill in those rights and privileges) 3) Any pirates in the area with comp tickets to a Ren Faire? What about throwing those in? 4) Perhaps crafting a "pirate sash" for the lad and using his favorite color for the fringe? My best wishes for a speedy recovery to this lad Captain Emerald -
DarkMalkin, I shall be at KCRF Sept 6&7, Oct 4th (considering the 5th also) and closing weekend of Oct 11-13th. M' and the Salty Kiss shall be at Great Plains Ren Fest on Sept 27th & 28th and thus, miss you at KCRF that weekend (as well as Scottish weekend at KCRF). Mayhaps our paths shall cross one of these weekends! And ye dinnae miss much this weekend save, the great flood o' Canterbury '03. The faire was actually cancelled on Sunday due to the amount of water covering the site but, we opened and ran the full day on Monday. M' and the lasses renamed Canterbury tae MireLand :) I must be off and continue to scrape mud and muck off m' clothes an' boots. Fair winds tae ye an' safe journeys! With Respects, Captain Emerald
