I use IE 8 on one of my computers so I checked it out - it works fine for me. It might be your virus software or something like that blocking it for some reason.
Not only does it close the browser after it partially opens, it also drops new folders on to my desktop containing this stuff which I don't understand :
An unexpected exception has been detected in native code outside the VM.

What version of what browser are you using?
Internet Explorer version 8.0.6001.18702
-
That's odd, it works fine for me. Try searching Google for Madam Joan's Wee Wiggies.
Really weird !!! The website starts to open, and then it closes my browser....... Maybe something amiss with the website ??? Any computer geeks venture a guess ??
-
A site I found while perusing the pub here has both and can base it on my hair. .
Apparently something is wrong with the link......... It won't open.
-
Sorry.
I've been quiet recently. You see, my favorite and local NHL hockey team just announced they were moving from Atlanta to Winnipeg, Canada.
I'm pissed, depressed, and generally upset about that. Its been trumping most all else recently.
When not obsessing over hockey forums, and working, and family, I've been reading the book "Shallops and Sloops," to learn more about one of my favorite period seacraft.
Hmmmmmm........ I guess I don't understand sports fans. How can they not still be your favorite team, even though they move to Winnepeg ??

Facebook and sites like it have just about made these types of forums obsolete. I notice that most folks communicate on Facebook anymore and not so much on the forum. Times are changing and the old always gets swept away by the new. Sad but true.
Bo
As for myself, I really don't like Facebook type things at all. I only joined it because I was forced into it in order to keep up with the Leviathan stuff. I much prefer a forum like this.

Unbelievable.
I called the rifle shoppe on Tuesday morning to order a triggerguard for the buss. This morning I went to the bank to see if they had charged the card since I couldn't get ahold of them. The money was gone and this afternoon the triggerguard arrived! Ordered on Tuesday arrived on Friday, that has got to be some record for the Rifle Shoppe.
Absolutely amazing !!!

For the past week I have had trouble moving from one thread to another, sometimes I have to go to the history and click on the links I have already been to in order to exit the one I'm in. If I use the "back" arrow it takes two or three clicks to get out of a thread and the google address comes up in between one thread and the next. Is this in my computer or is there something going on with the pub that would make this happen?
Thanx!
Bo
It's gotta be some issue with the Pub. I have to click my "back" arrow twice to move back to the previous page. I think Stynky broke something !!

I am in the process of building a Spanish blunderbuss and thought I would share some of the steps I am going in the process. Sort of a "here's my project from start to finish" feel free to comment along the way.
It all started when I found an original lock and purchased it. When looking at the lock I estimated it to be around 1720's (see thread on helping to ID a flintlock) for various reasons. As I have been unable to find any original examples of Spanish blunderbusses so I am taking a couple of liberties. I have decided on a simple flared design all in steel, the lock is rather plain and I plan on keeping the buss plain as well. As the lock is of French origin in design due to Spain's ruler if I were to build this as a common buss there would be little to distinguish it as Spanish once done. Cascabel made a wonderful suggestion to go with a Catalan styled stock and this is my intention. I am looking to build a larger buss and the barrel length will be around 20 inches overall length roughly 36 inches. As for caliber I am thinking of .75 which should pair with the lock very nicely. Here is a picture of the lock as well as my rough sketch of what the completed buss might look like.
I like it !!! You will have a well-proportioned and unique piece when done. Carry on, sez I........
-
I don't have one of their catalogs, I tried to call them for 3 weeks to try and order one but never had any luck getting them to pick up or return calls (big surprise). Ill see if they have anything on their site. I was in favor of a buss to keep the gun short as well as having a soft spot in my heart for a full sized buss. By the way what is the OD of your buss at the muzzle?
Mine is 1 7/8" at the muzzle, 18" long.

I figure I can either make a washer at the top or cut the bottom off of the threads so it will screw down farther. My preferable option of course is to find thick flints. Any chance you might have a picture of a Spanish Buss? I'm planning on building a steel barrel for this that way I should be able to fire her anywhere safely.
I looked in my library, and didn't find any Spanish blunderbusses. You might want to consider making one of those oddly stocked Catalan style pieces just to be different. You can see what they look like in the Rifle Shoppe catalog, if you have one.
There are much better ways to get a better bite on the flint than shortening the screw. You really need to increase the amount of "pinch" on the jaws. I noticed that the jaws on your lock are splayed apart, which does not grip the flint very well, and tends to let it work loose. As I said in my earlier post, it can be remedied.

Great looking old lock !! You have a couple of options for making it grip today's thinner flints. It involves minor unnoticeable modifications to the cock. Depending on your available shop equipment, it's not difficult. PM me and I'll explain it if you want.

Okay so you didn't use any type of core just let the leather form around the blade. What weight did you use?
I dunno, just some I had on hand, about 3/16" thick. Didn't feel the need for a core. Instead of sewing it, I laced it together with brass wire to be a bit different.

Interested to know how you put the twist in the sheath.
Actually quite simple. Just wet the leather, shove the knife into it, and let it dry.

Cascabel,
Hey! Where can I get a copy of Polanski's Pirates? I have looked before, but cannot find it online!
Thanks,
Capt. Freddie
I got mine on DVD from ebay a couple of years back. The one I got was shipped from a dealer in Brazil. It is in Portuguese, but if you go to the setup menu, you can select English, and it plays correctly. Has a couple of different languages available for subtitles if wanted, or you can choose no subtitles. It turns out that Brazil uses the same DVD format as the US, so it plays just fine You could also try Amazon. They sometimes have the Brazilian version available I bought my VHS copy years ago, as soon as it came out.

Beautiful work sir. Never would have thought a jet fan blade could come in so handy. Do you need a list of people to try it out on?
I think it would only work on people with "twisted" personalities....... That describes a LOT of my friends.
-
That'll make someone bleed badly! Nice work! Now, about the scabbard....
Bo
Scabbard is already done. It has a twist formed in it to match the blade.

Here is a new knife I made as a gift to my sweetheart. It's a fantasy piece, rather than historical. The blade is made from a compressor blade from a jet engine, and has quite a bit of twist to it. The handle is made from Black Palm wood. It's a pretty big knife with, a blade length of about 9 inches. If you look at the pic showing the top view, you can see the twist. I think it looks pretty exotic !!

One of my personal favorites is Roman Polanski's "PIRATES". Great characters, costumes and sets. Very entertaining !! And I also enjoyed Cutthroat island.
I also watch movies to be entertained, rather than to be educated, so I don't quibble about lapses in authenticity.....
Best all around pirate movie is the version of Treasure Island starring Charlton Heston as Long John Silver.

I have a question about rust, how to prevent it, and how to deal with it. I own a sea service pistol (steel) and a blunderbuss (brass) as well as a cutlass and boarding axe. I live and work on boats as a Captain. This winter I was the Captain of a SCUBA diving boat in Pompano Beach, FL and had my weapons with me as I intended to go to the Florida Renaissance festival and other festivals in the area. I ended up only taking my weapons out of the gun case (that I had purchased for flying with them and keep them stored in it for ease) once all winter while on the boat. Months latter when I opened the case again in Baltimore the locks of both guns were completely covered in rust as was the barrel of the pistol and my boarding axe. This was with them stored in a dry place in a sealed case! I chalked it up to just being in the salty ear working in a marine environment. Needless to say I am pissed about it. So what do I do now to fix it. I thought gun oil and still wool, but I really don't want to scratch things up in the process. More importantly, how do I prevent this from happening in the future? I am very busy with work and life so after using my weapons, I just want to clean them, put them away and not have to worry about them until I need them again and expect them to be in the same condition that I left them. I am also not rich so can't afford something so expensive to become unusable just from sitting around in storage. I don't get on Pyracy Pub often so feel free to contact me directly with your advice and solutions. Thank you.

First off...... You should NEVER store your guns in a gun case !!! They tend to hold moisture and humidity. Cases are designed for transporting guns, not storage. This is especially true of plastic cases and heavily padded ones. They cannot "breathe", and allow humidity to escape. If you absolutely MUST keep you guns in a case, make it one of the thin, un-padded breatheable cloth cases. An old blanket is a far better storage wrapper than any kind of ready made gun case, and cheap too !!
The best rust protection for both swords and guns is a good coat of Kiwi "neutral" shoe polish. It is readily available, and stays on better than any kind of oil, being that it is a wax. Just rub on a heavy coat, let it dry, and buff lightly. It leaves the metal coated and protected for quite a while. In a salt air environment, you would be wise to check your weapons for rust periodically, and re-treat with the wax. You will also notice that when going out of an air conditioned building into a hot summer day, that moisture will quickly condense on your metal surfaces. This needs to be wiped off quickly, and also be aware that this is occurring to guns inside your nice plastic gun cases, and being trapped inside !!!!

I think something like this is a good idea. Sort of a calendar of events that should have brief and complete info that should always stay at the top of the events page. ALL discussion inputs should be separate from the calendar info. This would prevent the important info from getting buried !!
