Firewood/charcoal – Firewood is being provided for your use. If you bring your own, PLEASE DO NOT BRING BAYWOOD. Charcoal is not being provided but can be easily obtained locally.
Out of curiosity, what is "BAYWOOD", and why should it not be brought ?

Today I went to our local pirate fest and decided not to fire any guns as I felt the safety stand point was questionable and would rather not be a part of that. I was able to view the firing of a cannon that to say the least was unsafe. I tried my best to find a "rule" that was not broken and try as I might I have been unable whether it was using a lighter to light it, no swabbing, walking in front of a loaded gun, bringing spectators around the gun, firing small arms over the gun while loading powder, the list is endless including DRINKING while loading and shooting. I wish I had had a video to capture a perfect example of what not to do, and to think this was at a public event.
There thats off my chest now.
The problem being that if there had been an accident, it could have gotten firing banned from other events, even though it had nothing to do with any of us. Such things make event promoters and sponsors very paranoid about lawsuits.....

Mr. Cascabel, could I request a copy as well sir? What could we barter/trade? I have some Spanish Colonial firesteels (Chispa's), and made some lead ladles for pouring /casting ball (small ones for doing 2-3 .50 cal size, or 1-2 .62-.75 cal. size). Let me know what you're most interested in.
Bo
I could use a good firesteel !! Send me a PM.....

The only log in option I can find is to use facebook. To get an option that allows me to use my regular login information I need to try to do something forbidden to nonmembers, like view a profile. Is this an intentional upgrade to push folks toward using facebook?
Good Lord, I hope not !!!! I absolutely HATE facebook......

How do I get a hold of this?

Salem Pioneer Vilage-1630 in Salem Massachusetts will be hosting their annual Pirate Day on October 22, 2011 from 10am to 4pm. Admission is $10.
This will be my own first time attending this event and I will be demonstrating my leather craft. This historical village is a recreation of Salem's founding in 1630 (kinda like a mini version of Plimoth Plantation) and is the oldest and first living history community in America (built in the 1930's). Salem is of course famous as the Witch City and the city's annual Halloween festivities will be in full swing. Salem also has an enormous pirate and privateer history with many nice little museums (gotta go see the New England Pirate Museum: www.piratemuseum.com).
Shameless plug for one of my favorite places.

Wow, I'm amazed this place is still in existance !!!! ( Assuming it's the same place I remember visiting as a kid back in the 1950's ) It was pretty crude and unimpressive back then, as I remember. Nice to hear they are still operational.

...New things I hadn't notice before came up, like Billy bones having a knuckle guard in place of the trigger guard...
Hummmmm... in Pyrat's posted pic it looks like there is a trigger guard plus the knuckle guard.
Perhaps Cascabel can enlighten us on how common this was. I wonder if it is an aid to use the pistol to parry sword thrusts????
Jas. Hook
Many years ago, I saw one like that in an antique weapons dealer's catalog (Robert Abels). Never saw another one, so I suspect it was not common. I helped Braze make one for his pistol. It came out very nice, actually nicer than the one in the movie. I'm sure it was intended to parry sword cuts. I can see no other reason for it.

When I used to make stuff out of horn, it seems I remember goat horn having much less of a hollow section than cow horn. I used goat horn when I needed solid sections. Might be what you need for making fids......

You will also find that real black powder is considerably cheaper that the substitute stuff !!

I wrote an in-depth 3 part series of articles for No Quarter Given magazine a few years ago, that tells you everything you need to know about the use and care of flintlocks. I have reprints available if you are interested. PM me if you want a copy.

What is the metal? Is it steel of some alloy or a different metal altogether?
It's steel, but I'm not certain what the alloy is. Something fairly exotic I'm sure, being a jet engine compressor blade.

.........and where might this "Fisherman's Village" be, and when is the event ??
-
I'm looking for a trigger guard because i am making a non operational flintlock from scratch.
It'd be nice to find a cheap and decent looking one. It's for a pistol flintlock.
Just as a matter of curiosity, why are you making a non operational flintlock from scratch ? It's the same amount of work to make a functional one. Are there legal issues where you live ?

Smoothbore accuracy has a lot to do with the manner in which it is loaded. If loaded in the military fashion with a loose fitting ball, accuracy will be quite chancey, but if loaded with a tightly fitting patched ball, accuracy can be very good. Much of the poor accuracy stories come from the loose fitting ball situation using military muskets and pistols loaded "military style". Military expedient called for multiple shots and rapid re-loading, rather than careful aiming, thus the reason for a loose fit of the ball. Duelling was another matter entirely.

Hey all, just wanted to pop in and let ya'll know I'm still alive. Been busy looking for work, shooting stock images and getting ready to go back to school.

The tulip makes an elegant variation on the shell-guard, which has always been one of my favorites. Is there a historical precedent or was this personal inspiration?
Just my interpretation of an appropriate shell guard design for a character known as "Dutch". I have no idea if there is "documentation" for it. There are lots of variations of shell guards, so I guess it's possible.......

Question is>>>> were these use ship board too ??
The picture shows what appears to be something to pour liquids from, yet the description sounds more like what is usually called a "Betty Lamp".
