  1. All things considered, would it be beyond the realm of possibility for the flag to be made of canvas or linen simply painted black with either a painted on or sewn on design of white canvas ? Seems to me that the needed materials were already at hand. Painted fabric would be a bit stiff at first, but would soon soften from flapping in the breeze. Much simpler than obtaining a large piece of black dyed cloth, and a replacement could easily be made when needed. Any thoughts on that idea ??

  2. All of this makes me wonder, why a pirate would bother to keep a journal or diary of any kind. Certainly not to be able to show a higher authority that he had been busy doing his job, like a naval or merchant captain might need to. A logbook would hardly be important for the same reason, other than to make note of important details like location of sandbars, shoals and the like. Why keep a written record of your criminal activity ?

  3. About the tree...I belive that is supposed to be pine...It also may represent a palm tree and it has been drawn by illustrator who had never be in tropics or seen palm tree (or blackbeard). ;)

........My point exactly !! I think the artist based it on what seamen were wearing at the time the illustration was comissioned, and apparently had no studio props to base detail on, thus the poorly rendered weapons. Blackbeard's appearance was apparently based on the artist's imagination, and whatever descriptions he could get from his client.

  4. If it was first published in 1736, it was most certainly not drawn from life! So many of the early illustrations are notoriously innacurate as to proportion and details. I suspect that the artists never even used a costumed model for reference, and just made the illustrations according to what they imagined the character looked like. If you look at the pistols, they are also poorly rendered. Even the tree does not look like anything that actually exists. The old woodcuts are even worse than the engravings for reference purposes.

  5. Ahoy Cascabel!

Still sharing the news about your great resource, Flintlocks 101. I'm sending you an order for 10 more so I can continue spreading the word to new and experienced black powder enthusiasts alike. Please tell the lovely Lady Jaye I said hello!

Thanks for the repeat order, and the compliment !! Jaye said to tell you hello, and thanks for thinking of her....

  6. Received Cascabel's "Flintlocks 101" just in time for Christmas. Buxom Anne Marie (B.A.M.) wants a Queen Anne pistol (figures), so she can be a part of the battle at Fort Taylor's Pirate Invasion next year. Guess she'll have to change from B.A.M. to Bam Bam. Previewed the instructional before wrapping it and found it to be a great educational tool. Well done. Thank you Cascabel for the quick delivery in time for Christmas.

Amazing !!! It got to you in only a couple of days. I guess the Postal service is not all that bad.....

  9. Be that as it may, Priscilla at CA Boots is also one of the rudest, least attentive, and least caring individuals I have ever had the misfortune to deal with. The attitude of the company is the biggest problem. That being an attitude of "We're always right, and you don't know what you're talking about, so there's no need for us to try to appease you as a customer." I never once received an apology for the abysmal experience I had with this company.

Sadly, yes, a lot of merchants out there seem to have this same mentality, but I have never dealt with one I so wholeheartedly despised than this particular company. In my personal experience, at any rate.

A lot of companies need to learn this lesson. A satisfied customer will tell their close friends, but an unsatisfied customer will tell the whole world !!

  10. My only big gripe with the article was the part where they basically stated that since Mythbusters proved the eyepatch thing could PLAUSABLY be used to adjust for seeing below decks, it was essentially proven that pirates actually did this. Hell, I don't even know where Mythbustes GOT that myth. I'd never even heard of it previous to that episode.

    Regarding the eyepatch thing.......

If there was any basis in fact about that, it would have been common practice among ALL seamen, including merchants, fishermen, naval personnnel, etc. No written reference to the practice exists that I am aware of. I had never heard of it before the Mythbusters episode. Pure horse manure, like so many other things that make the rounds on the Internet !!!!

(One of my favorites being the excuses for Jack Sparrow style eye make-up on pirates. Again, if there was any basis in fact, it would have been commonly done by ALL seamen, and not just pirates.)

  11. Interlinings, especially at CF, and batting for the pleaty bits make a big difference in how a coat hangs, a wee bit of padding in the slight hollow 'tween shoulder and pecs gives a nice period shape too.

Oh, yes, it certainly does. Especially if you use some buckram along the CF, too--keeps it from flopping forward and gives some support to buttons and button holes.

I am curious about the padding "'tween shoulder and pecs" though. Something I haven't seen yet. Do you have a visual (inside of a coat, perhaps?)

.......And what, exactly is the "CF" ????

  12. Oh yeah, good question... nuts... I usually find it near where they have the paints, I believe. But it should be somewhere near the woodworking, leather, beading, and whatnot. Those are usually all in the same general area. If all else fails though, I'd say ask an employee (assuming they know what they're talking about... which... well, y'know).

Hmmmmm....... That's MAYBE a little more helpful than the dolts that work there !!   Most often they have no idea at all where anything is.

    Thanx anyhow....

  13. Okay, I've got an easier solution than all of these, if you've got a Michael's craft store nearby. It's called Sophisticated Finishes, and it gives a fantastic artificially aged patina to brass. They do recommend caution with their greening solution specifically because of the copper oxide concern, but I've never had a problem with it. However, as michaelsbagley said, you might not want to get it too near your eyes.

What area of Michael's craft store has this ? I hate wandering around stores hunting for obscure stuff !!
