http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/story/2012/10/29/ns-hms-bounty-hurricane-sandy.html?cmp=googleeditorspick 2 missing as Hurricane Sandy sinks HMS Bounty 16 crew members in 2 life-rafts off North Carolina coast CBC News Posted: Oct 29, 2012 6:49 AM AT Last Updated: Oct 29, 2012 10:43 AM AT Two crew members of a Nova Scotia-built replica vessel are missing after abandoning ship off the coast of North Carolina in high seas brought on by Hurricane Sandy. Officials with the U.S. Coast Guard told CBC News the 16-member crew of HMS Bounty decided to abandon ship after getting caught in 5.5-metre seas off Cape Hatteras on Monday. All the crew members made it onto two life-rafts but only 14 people were hoisted onto helicopters, said U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Brendan Selerno. He said officials have not yet had the chance to debrief the 14 survivors to find out what happened to the two other crew members. Selerno said the two missing crew members are believed to be in survival suits. He said the air search is being plotted based on wind direction and speed, and will be expanded. HMS Bounty sank several hours after the evacuation. Read more at the link.

http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/10/29/14775512-helicopter-sent-to-rescue-17-people-who-abandoned-hms-bounty-off-nc-coast?lite By NBC News staff Updated at 9:15 a.m. ET: A helicopter rescue operation was under way Monday for 17 people who abandoned the HMS Bounty as the ship was sinking off the coast of North Carolina, the U.S. Coast Guard said. "Our helicopter has arrived on scene and the hoisting operation is under way," according to one Coast Guard official. The ship issued a distress signal late Sunday after taking on water, the U.S. Coast Guard said. The owner of the 180-foot, three mast ship -- which was built for the 1962 Marlon Brando movie, "Mutiny on the Bounty" -- lost communication with the crew and alerted the Coast Guard to the situation. I've always noticed that High Fashion swings between extremes, excesses of either cloth or skin. Either the style shows too much of the anatomy or piles on enough cloth to make a tent. In our period, especially early on, the massive ammounts of cloth seemed to be the norm: long coats and waistcoats, massively blousy shirts and pants, gigantic cuffs. The only thing showing (on men) being the hands and the face and even then the hands obscured by lace and cuffs. It must have taken an hour to dress, and half an hour to...ah...answer the call of nature. If you want function in relation to men's court costume, look to pictures of duels, hunting clothes, riding outfits. Courtly expeditions into the field combined manly pursuits with the normal posturing and excess that went on at court. I imagine that the clothing combinations would be better suited to playing outdoors at pyrate events while still clinging to the basic need to be excessive in execution. Mind you, I'm just ruminating here...not even beginning to be an authority in this, just thinkin'.

One of the best papers I ever read (on a study of population dynamics of Geomys pinetis in southern pine flatwoods) was filled with humor. Small, insider jokes about statistics, fieldwork and metodology, puns, plays on words all in just plain English except where needed. It was a genuine pleasure to read. I have long since lost my copy and miss it whenever I am called upon to write something "sciencey" for I used it as my model throughout College. Only once did a prof. knock me on the style, but restored the deducted points when I showed him my published source for style.

I would love to see a works drawing for the pan mechanism. Nice. And another site-find to study. Thanks, I hadn't found that one.

Let me know when you plan to hit the Florida line. Anytime you run into trouble after that, I'll come get you berfore I head south. I'm leaving the Sarasota area Wednesday night. If you get to Florida before that and run into trouble, I'll come get you. So I'll get south a little late, I'll be Pyratin' the whole time. Say, is there anyone north of me to tag off and see to it that Bo gets there? We'll do this in relay if needed. Damn. New idea. What if we all check in as we move south, forming a sort of wave of support? I don't really know how this would work (so, OK, I've got a little rhum going here.) A phone tree maybe. Someone may be asked to backtrack some mileage or wait an hour (or so) but we could put a plan in place. A collective wave, picking up members as we go along. We're gonna form a convoy! An Armada! We could so scare the crap out of the Highway Patrol!

Your "authentic" Pirate Kit - Pictures
Captain Jim replied to Gentleman of Fortune's topic in Captain Twill
The Archangel and Forsaken crews...wow. I'm so gonna elevate my game in the coming year and I'm gonna use these guys as my models. -
Is that deck covered in bricks? Talk about fire retardant.

What if we used exploding pies? (runs for cover, dodging explosive epithets...) -
Welcome back.

Richard Southard, pronounced "south-erd" as opposed to "suth-erd". Called by his crew, "Cap'n Richard." I think that the title with the first name connects the crew, while Cap'n Southard might be a bit too formal for a pyrate crew. Of course if we are a privateer crew in good standing, then the address would have been more formal. If a privateer crew with "slipped" papers or a couple of sketchy captures it could go either way. BTW, is our captain elected or appointed by Letter?

http://www.rsci.com/ Richmond Supply still has it on their list. In one, five and ten-pound cans.

If money was not an issue, there would be a boat in this picture. As for twits spoiling one's fun, twits will be with us always. Many here have had that experience and just found another group or event. Or created one of their own.

Pronounced "south ard" or "suth erd"?
-
You posted that onece today already, on another forum. You having skin problems or something? Deep into pyrate skin ailments?
-
Well it didn't for me until now! Yeah, thanks a lot.

I kind of like John Whitehead. Historic, strong. The fort is located just off Whitehead street. (I'll take a walk down Whitehead Street, hang a left at the Green Parrot Bar..Sing it to Buffett's Migration.)

Aye, hadn't thought of that yet. Not yet got my guard and so haven't practiced.

Agreed. He's a good man and true. Now, why is he a pyrate again? I mean, the man's past can be a mystery that he doesn't talk about much, but we should know some things about him. Not too much detail, just enough.

So, is our Captain a stout fellow, well met and a true sea wolf, or a bumbling idiot we elected captain so he would go to his cabin and stay out of the way of our Quartermaster? Is the reason he is away so much that he is on important work for the ship or that we have sent him on a fools mission? "Captain! We need a left-handed keel straightener! One can be had in the village 30 miles to the North! Go quick!"

Cinnebar Quicksilver? Sounds like some sort of confection, an energy bar for skateboarders. I think a good, stout English name and a good stout backstory would probably be best. So first things first: Is he English, English Colonial or what?

I like the French fusil de chasse. Introduced in the 1670's and imported in various grades and large numbers. A smoothbore, it is the successor to the buccaneer musket and is, to my eye anyway, a bit more graceful. The image below from Track of the Wolf.

Captian Quicksilver comes to mind, but there already is a Quicksilver living in California (he came to the 2005 PiP). Perhaps too simplistic, too in keeping with the Mercury theme as to be too clever by half. Still, it has to be discussed.
