I'm mostly in agreement with the above posts. But some additions for me:
I normally camp and nice green grass sure beats dusty hardpack. (beaches and trees are even better)
Ability to have a campfire - some of my best times/friends ever have been around a campfire.
The company is very important, a live and let live attitude is a must whether known friends or new acquaintances
(The general attitudes I sensed on this forum brought me to FTPI the first time)

Well spoken mates, and thank ye. But as for interest waning in any permanent degree, Nay I say! All is well and well on the way!
I just spent a long weekend on Ocracoke Island, NC, where Blackbeard's last fight was reenacted with three wooden boats, one brigantine, one sloop, and one periauger! (The "Pirate Jamboree" on Ocracoke Island) So much action in the harbor that the USCG had to come and take a look - and lots of pirates, almost all historically-accurate ones, all over the village and the island all weekend. It was a great time, incredible the way the pirates basically took over the island for the weekend! And it was the first year of this festival, no less! So there are new events coming along, and new folks to them, and so I don't despair a'tall.
The economy has hit all things fun, educational, historical, etc., very hard, as we all had to focus more on our day to day responsibilities. But things are coming back from what I see. Soon as the next POTC comes out, there'll be the crowds of curious types around more than maybe now. My observations of the recent times are that while there may be fewer CJS's about these days, there are more and more historically-accurate folks coming on board. As always, the dedicated souls at events like Ocracoke and Hampton and the like in other locales make all the difference - can't thank them enough for everything. And those that keep the Pub going for all of us. And, for ye record, thanks to ye all, mates!
Yours, aye-
John

Thought I would share my use of the Mercury Patch. I have an FTPI patch to put on now too.
this is the duffel I travel with to events. It contains my tent, blanket and hammock or cot depending on facilities:

At this point I have traced and cut all the tracings. hard to see some of it as the leather dries...

So a friend has commissioned me to build a leather map frame to protect a map and which rolls up and fits into her map case.
map size is approx 16 X 22. essentially it will be like a picture frame, with the back tooled with a similar map.
so here are the humble beginnings:
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/R1jYmTuiId6Mc3UKcJl5YIsHQv063_3yt8uZINcLaKo?feat=directlink
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/sMYcf0dj8toRZ8T3S6USo4sHQv063_3yt8uZINcLaKo?feat=directlink
Remember measure twice cut once? Well, half the challenge in leather is a good plan and accurate measurements. For the
map to fit and have the frame stitched around the edge to hold it in place, I added 3/4 inch to dimensions. the stitching will
be 1/4 inch from the edge all the way around, so the overall size has to be sightly larger to accomodate the map.
One challenge here is that we need a thin piece of leather so that it rolls up with the stitched frame around it.
This is diametrically opposed to stamping a pattern in the leather. The thicker the leather, the more depth you get when you
tool it. So this is the thinnest leather I think I can tool sufficiently.
Basically the leather is dampened, the map laid over it and pinned in place. Now with a ball point pen I trace the pattern onto
the damp leather. This leaves a pattern to work with.
Then with a swivel knife, the traced lines are cut.
Then the work begins: using edge stamps and shaders, the edges along the cut lines will be stamped.
once complete, it will be stained and a protective finish follows
ZThen the the strips in the photo will be stitched to the opposite side of the tooling. then the map can be slid inside the frame.
When you roll it up you see the tooled map on the leather.

this is where I got it. but the the piece I bought was advertised with flaws for much cheaper...
and the width was 57" - I do have enough leftover for a seabag or two.

14 oz canvas approx 36 by 84. I think I bought 3 yards of 45 inch wide material.
it was 100% hemp linen canvas, that was offered with irregularities. my piece was near perfect.

tandy. unless I happen across one of the sutlers that shows at our local events.

May it be a great one!
